The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a heat exchanger composed of round headers and 10 flat tubes. The effects of tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated, and the results are compared with the previous 30 channel results. The flow at the header inlet is annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted geometry, significant portion of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, different from the downward configuration, significant portion of the water flows through the rear part of the header. The effect of the protrusion depth is the same as that of the downward flow. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. However, the effect of mass flux or quality is opposite to the downward flow case. As the mass flux or quality increases, more water flows through the frontal part of the header. Compared with the previous thirty channel configuration, the present ten channel configuration yields better flow distribution. Possible explanation is provided from the flow visualization results.

The indoor temperature of a building increases during the day due to solar radiation. This behavior is significant in school buildings that are finished with high thermal capacity materials. Moreover, in school buildings, windows cannot be opened until the class has finished owing to the security policy of schools. Consequently, classrooms maintain a high temperature throughout the morning. It is thus important to remove the indoor heat before the commencement of classes in order to reduce the cooling energy needed. The Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) system is currently being installed in school buildings for ventilating the classrooms. Night-purge control using ERV can be a good strategy to cool the classroom in advance of the operation of the cooling system. However, the optimal operation method of the ERV for night-purge control has not yet been reported. In this study, the effect of night-purge control with ERV in school buildings is analyzed by simulation method. The results of this study showed that the energy saving effect of night-purge control with ERV is most effective in the case of 2 hours operation prior to the commencement of the first lass and when enthalpy based outdoor air cooling is used.

In this study, energy performance of two types of food dryers which are electric heater and heat pump is studied experimentally. With drying chamber temperatures controlled at 45, 50 and $55^{\circ}C$, sliced radish is dried from an initial mass of 90 to final 7 kg. Moisture content, drying time, total power consumption, MER (moisture extraction rate, kg/h) and SMER (specific moisture extraction rate, kg/kWh) are measured and analyzed. As the drying chamber temperature is increased, drying time is shortened but energy efficiency is reduced for both types. For an electric heater dryer, the effect of chamber temperature on drying time is significant but less significant on energy efficiency. For a heat pump dryer, the dependence of chamber temperature on drying time is weak but strong on energy efficiency. Temperature levels have little effect on electric heater dryer performance but strong effect on heat pump dryer which operates on a vapor compression refrigeration cycle. The energy performance of the heat pump dryer is superior with an average SMER of 2.175 kg/kWh which is 2.22 times greater than that of the electric heater dryer with SMER of 1.224 kg/kWh.
In this paper, magnetic property and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in perovskite manganites of the type $La_{(0.75-X)}Ce_XCa_{0.25}MnO_3$ (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5) synthesized by using the standard solid state reaction method have been reported. From the magnetic measurements as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, we have observed that the Curie temperature ($T_C$) of the prepared samples strongly dependent on Ce content and was found to be 255, 213 and 150 K for x = 0.0, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. A large magnetocaloric effect in vicinity of $T_C$ has been observed with a maximum magnetic entropy change (${\mid}{\Delta}S_M{\mid}_{max}$) of 3.31 and 6.40 J/kgK at 1.5 and 4 T, respectively, for $La_{0.55}Ce_{0.2}Ca_{0.25}MnO_3$. In addition, relative cooling power (RCP) of the sample under the magnetic field variation of 1.5 T reaches 59 J/kg. These results suggest that $La_{0.55}Ce_{0.2}Ca_{0.25}MnO_3$ compound could be a suitable candidate as working substance in magnetic refrigeration at 213 K.
This study was performed numerical analysis in order to analyze liquid film flow of heat exchanger tube arrangement and configuration of evaporative multi effect distillation system using medium-temperature. Simulation was accomplished the two-dimensional calculations using commercial analyses program FLUENT based on the FVM(finite volume method). Fresh water generator of this study used Shell & Tubes heat exchanger with Cu_Ni tube, configuration of tube used bare tube and corrugated tube, and arrangement of tube used in-line array and staggered array. Performance of heat exchanger through the formation of liquid film was compared and analyzed. Liquid film flow occurred that falling on heat exchanger tube wall. Result of simulation showed that liquid film thickness of in-line arrangement was found 0.57mm with bare tube and 0.67mm with corrugated tube, respectively. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement was found 0.39mm with bare tubes and 0.62mm with corrugated tubes, respectively. Liquid film thickness of corrugated tube showed thicker than bare tube, but heat transfer rates of corrugated tube showed higher than bare tube. The reason was considered that surface area of corrugated tube was wider than bare tube. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement showed thinner than in-line arrangement, so thermal performance of staggered arrangement showed higher than in-line arrangement.

A new set of capillary tube selection charts for R-22 is proposed. The set of charts takes into account of the roughness effect on the mass flow rate. For this purpose, a set of numerical model is developed and a series of experiments is conducted to verify the numerical model. A numerical model is used to calculated the mass flow rate for several sets of tube diameter, length, inlet pressures and degree of subcooling. The outlet of the tube is controlled to be at critical condition. The experimental flow rate is compared with calculated values. The calculated values are consistently less than the experimental ones except for the flow rate range below 40kg/hr. The deviation is within 10---. Based on the nunmerical model and results of experiments, the set of capillary tube selection charts for R-22 is constructed. The set of charts consists of standard capillary tube chart(L=2030mm, d=1.63mm, ${\varepsilon}=2.5{\mu}m$), non -standard flow factor(${\phi}_1$) chart, and non-standard roughness factor(${\phi}_2$) chart. The mass flow rate, flow factor, and the roughness factor are defined respectively as; $\dot{m}={\phi}_1{\phi}_2\dot{m}_{standard}\\{\phi}_1=\frac{\dot{m}(L,\;d,\;\varepsilon_{standard})}{\dot{m}_{standard}(L_{standard},\;d_{standard},\;{\varepsilon}_{standard})}\\{\phi}_2=\frac{\dot{m}(L_{standard},\;d_{standard},\;{\varepsilon})}{\dot{m}_{standard}(L_{standard},\;d_{standard},\;{\varepsilon}_{standard})}$.

The effect of enhanced geometry (pore diameter, gap width) is investigated on the pool boiling of R-123/oil mixture for the enhanced tubes having pores with connecting gaps. Tubes with different pore diameters (and corresponding gap widths) are specially made. Significant heat transfer degradation by oil is observed for the present enhanced tubes. At 5% oil concentration, the degradation is 26 to 49% for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$. The degradation increases 50 to 67% for $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer degradation is significant even with small amount of oil (20 to 38% degradation at 1% oil concentration for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$), probably due to the accumulation of oil in sub-tunnels. The pore size (or gap width) has a significant effect on the heat transfer degradation. The maximum degradation is observed for $d_p$ = 0.20 mm tube at $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$, and for $d_p$=0.23 mm tube at $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The minimum degradation is observed for $d_p$=0.27 mm tube for both saturation temperatures. It appears that the oil removal is facilitated for the larger pore diameter (along with larger gap) tube. The highest heat transfer coefficient with oil is obtained for $d_p$ =0.23 mm tube, which yielded the highest heat transfer coefficient for pure R-123. The heat transfer degradation increases as the heat flux decreases.

The R-134a flow distribution is experimentally studied for a heat exchanger composed of round headers and 10 flat tubes. The effects of tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated, and the results are compared with the previous air-water results. The flow at the header inlet is stratified. For the downward flow configuration, the liquid distribution improves as the protrusion depth or the mass flux increases, or the quality decreases. For the upward configuration, the liquid distribution improves as the mass flux or quality decreases. The protrusion depth has minimal effect. For the downward configuration. the effect of quality on liquid distribution is significantly affected by the flow regime at the header inlet. For the stratified inlet flow, the liquid is forced to rear part of the header as the quality decreases. However, for the annular inlet flow, the liquid was forced to the frontal part of the header as the quality decreased. For the upward flow, the effect of the mass flux or quality on liquid distribution of the stratified inlet flow is opposite to that of the annular inlet flow. The high gas velocity of the annular flow may be responsible for the trend. Generally, the liquid distribution of the stratified inlet flow is better than that of the annular inlet flow. Possible explanation is provided from the flow visualization results.

The purpose of this study was to examine the in vitro effects of body and visceral portion of Haliotis discus hannai on angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity and antioxidant and anticoagulant capacity. Extracts from both abalone body and visceral portion using 80% ethanol showed a high ACE-inhibitory effect. While ACE-inhibitory effect of extracts of the body part was dose-dependent, visceral extracts did not show any difference by the level of concentration. ACE-inhibitory effect of the visceral portion was much higher than that of the body. Antioxidant capacity was increased with increasing concentration of 80% ethanol body extracts although the capacity was low. The 80% ethanol visceral extracts showed a similar level of antioxidant capacity to the body extract in low concentration. Water extracts showed a dose-dependent increase in the activity. There was no significant difference in the antioxidant activity between the body and the visceral part. Anticoagulant capacity of 80% ethanol extracts, which was measured using prothrombin time(PT), was higher in the body part than the visceral part. Water extracts of Haliotis discus showed no any significant effect on anticoagulant capacity. The in vitro effects were also examined after Haliotis discus was refrigerated for 48 hours. Higher ACE-inhibitory effect was observed for the visceral portion than the body, in particular, before the sample was refrigerated. Antioxidant effect of Haliotis discus increased with increasing level of the sample before it was refrigerated. However, there was a significant difference between the body and the visceral part, which showed significantly higher capacity. There was no significant difference between the body and visceral part in PT regardless of refrigeration. While activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) showed no significant difference between body and visceral part, there was a significant difference in the capacity between before and after the refrigeration, which showed much lower coagulant capacity.

In this study, flow boiling experiments were performed using R-134a on a plain tube bundle. Tests were conducted for the following range of variables; quality from 0.1 to 0.9, mass flux from 8kg/$m^2$s to 26 kg/$m^2$s and heat flux from 10kW/$m^2$ to 40kW/$m^2$. The heat transfer coefficients were strongly dependent on the heat flux. However, they were almost independent on the mass flux or quality. The data are compared with the modified Chen model, which predicted satisfactorily ($\pm$30%) the data. The Original Chen model, however, did not adequately predict the effect of quality. The reason may be attributed to the flow pattern of the present test, where the bubbly flow prevailed for the entire test range. The heat transfer coefficients of the tube bundle were 6~40% higher than those of the single tube pool boiling.
