  • High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are characterized by having five or more main elements and forming simple solids without forming intermetallic compounds, owing to the high entropy effect. HEAs with these characteristics are being researched as structural materials for extreme environments. Conventional refractory alloys have excellent high-temperature strength and stability; however, problems occur when they are used extensively in a high-temperature environment, leading to reduced fatigue properties due to oxidation or a limited service life. In contrast, refractory entropy alloys, which provide refractory properties to entropy alloys, can address these issues and improve the high-temperature stability of the alloy through phase control when designed based on existing refractory alloy elements. Refractory high-entropy alloys require sufficient milling time while in the process of mechanical alloying because of the brittleness of the added elements. Consequently, the high-energy milling process must be optimized because of the possibility of contamination of the alloyed powder during prolonged milling. In this study, we investigated the high-temperature oxidation behavior of refractory high-entropy alloys while optimizing the milling time.

카오린으로부터 테르밋 반응을 통한 $Al_2O_3-SiC-C(ASC)$계 내화재료 합성 (Preparations of ASC Refractory Materials from Kaolin using Thermit Reaction)

  • Al2O3-SiC-C(ASC) refractory materials were prepared from kaolin using thermit reaction. The mixed powder (A-K) for the thermit reaction was composed of Hadong kaolin, C(graphite) and Al. A-S(SiO2+C+Al) composition was also employed to compare with A-K in respect to reactability. As a result of XRD patterns of A-K sample after thermit reaction, and firing at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs in Ar atmosphere, it was possible to use as a ASC refractory materials.

산화물계 SEN내화물의 슬래그 라인부 침식특성 연구 (Study on the Corrosion Characteristics in the Slag Line of SEN Oxide Refractory)

  • The corrosion resistance of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) materials were investigated for high-class steel manufacturing. Composite samples were fabricated by mixing $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO, mullite, spinel, and carbon. The raw materials were mixed with attrition milling, compacted in a uniaxial pressure of 200MPa and calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in $N_2$ atmosphere. The bulk density and apparent porosity of the calcined samples were measured by the liquid displacement method in water using Archimedes's principle. The corrosion resistance of the samples were measured by cup test with mold powder at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The microstructure and elemental analysis of samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), and X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD). The XRD result shows that the starting raw materials were crystalline phase. The microstructure of fabricated specimen was investigated before and after corrosion tests at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. $ZrO_2$-C composite showed good resistance in the slag corrosion test. Among the composite oxide materials, $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C and $ZrO_2$-MgO-C showed better resistance than $ZrO_2$-C in the slag corrosion test. The diameter variation index of $ZrO_2$-C refractory was 16.1 at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The diameter variation index of the $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C refractory was larger than that of the $ZrO_2$-C refractory at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h.

Plasma Display Panel용 기판 유리용융체의 내화물 침식 (Corrosion of Refractory in Glass Melts for Plasma Display Panel Substrate)

  • For self-developed alkali-alkaline earth-silicate and commercial glass melts for plasma display panel substrate, the corrosion behavior of fused casting refractory consisting of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ was examined at the temperature corresponding to $10^2\;dPa{\cdot}s$ of melt viscosity by static finger methode. The corroded refractory specimens showed a typical concave shape due to interfacial convection of melts at their flux line. However, the corrosion thickness by commercial glass melts was $6\sim10$ times comparing to that by the self?developed melts. From the view point of the glass composition and the role of alkaline earth in glass network, it was discussed the effect of alkali/alkaline earth diffusion and temperature on the refractory corrosion.

갈천리 야철로 내화재료의 기초적 연구 (A Basic Study on the Refractory Material of Kalcheon Iron Making Furnace)

  • Materials (refractory, stone) of iron making furnace excavated from Kalcheon were investigated by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), X-ray fluorescence(XRF), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Chemical composition of the refractory materials were $SiO_2(68.74\%),\;Al_2O_3(18.40\%),\;CaO(0.42\%),\;MgO(1.04\%)\;and\;K_2O(2.26\%)$ in weight ratio, which were the typical components presented in common clay. The results of chemical analysis for the stone and the glaze coated, alkali ion(K, Na, Ca) components of the glaze contained high concentration than that the stone. It was suggested that this change had a close relationship with the kinds of fuels used.

Future Outlook of Refractories for Iron and Steelmaking

  • Refractory industry in technologically advanced countries has long been on gradual decline due to leveled-off steel production and decreasing unit consumption of refractories for steel. Notable technological achievements by refractory industry that contributed significantly to steel production are briefly reviewed covering from blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace to continuous casting. Future possibility to revitalize the refractory industry is discussed on the basis of the review, taking into account opportunities available in environment and energy related sector of industries.

전기로 폐 MgO-C계 내화재의 제강원료 활용 가능성 연구 (Basic Study on the Recycling of a Waste MgO-C Refractory Material as a Flux for EAF Steelmaking)

  • 현재 EAF 전기로 제강공정에서는 슬래그 중의 MgO 함량을 증가시켜 탈황능과 내화재 수명을 개선시키고자 돌로마이트(백운석) 용제(Flux)를 첨가하고 있으며, 또한 에너지효율을 증가시키기 위해 용강 중에 가탄재를 취입하고 있다. 이러한 견지에서 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 재활용하는 연구를 진행하였다. 폐 MgO-C계 내화재는 MgO(>70%)과 탄소(>10%)를 대량 함유하고 있기 때문이다. 이런 목적으로 제강 슬래그를 대상으로 해서 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 첨가하는 효과를 실험하였고 그 결과를 경소 돌로마이트를 첨가한 결과와 비교하여 폐 MgO-C계 내화재 재활용 효과를 평가하였다. 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 사용해서 얻은 결과가 슬래그 염기도 측면에서 경소 돌로마이트를 사용한 결과와 유사하게 나타남으로써 기존 경소 돌로마이트 대체 가능성을 확인하였다. 특히 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 사용한 경우에는, 폐 내화재에 다량 함유된 흑연 성분에 의한 슬래그 중의 철산화물과의 환원반응으로 CO가스가 발생하여 생긴 크고 작은 기포들이 관찰되었으며 이로써 슬래그 Foaming 효과를 기대할 수 있는 것으로 확인하였다.

전부 주조관 제작을 위한 내화모형재 분리에 관한 연구 (A Study about the Separation of the materials Used in Refractory Cast Dies For Making All Ceramic Crowns)

  • I attempted to suggest a better method to separate a refractory cast in order to solve the problems caused by bonding between refractory casts and ceramics in the firing-processing of all ceramic crowns as a part of dental prosthodontics. I emphasize the advantages and effectiveness of easy separation after firing by using the separating materials about the refractory cast dies. 1. We must not usse HF(55%) that is used as the chemical separating methods. 2. We decrease such methods as grinding, blasting, bur, and point 3. We can save time, costs and manual labors by using this methods. 4. This method regulates the expansion and constriction of heat because of the chemical reaction of the separating materials. 5. This method contribute to the breaking down without modification by minimizing the chemical and mechanical damages of the marginal and interior parts.

내화물 응용을 위한 산화물 재료들과 탄소와의 고온 반응거동 (High Temperature Reaction Behaviors of Oxide Materials with Carbon for Refractory Application)

  • High temperature reaction behaviors of various oxide materials (such as bauxite, pyrophyllite, mullite and fused silica powders) used in the refractory materials for tap-hole plugging of blast furnace were investigated with varying temperature in the carbon surrounding. Kinetics of carbothermal reduction of $SiO_2$ for forming SiC with high corrosion resistance were strongly dependent on it's crystalline phase. SiC generation yield increased with increasing catalyst amount in oxide regardless of generated SiO gas amount at temperature of $<1500^{\circ}C$. However, in case of fused silica over $1500^{\circ}C$, SiC generation yield was dominantly influenced by SiO amount without catalyst effect. Bauxite showed the most effective carbothermal reduction reaction, since bauxite have a large amount of catalyst and well-dispersed $SiO_2$ phase in oxide matrix.

색상선별(色相選別) 기술(技術)을 이용(利用)한 고온(高溫) 용융노(熔融爐) 이화재(而火材) 재활용(再活用)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Study on Recycling of Refractory Materials from High-Temperature Melting Furnace by Color Sorting Technology)

  • 국내의 경우 내화재는 일정 기간이 지나면 대부분 폐기 처분되고 있으며, 폐기되는 내화재의 50% 이상이 탄화되지 않은 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 내화재를 색상인식 방법으로 선별하여 재활용 가능성을 검토하였다. 선별기 광원의 색온도가 자연광에 가까운 6,500K에서 순도 97.2%의 회수물을 얻었으며, 자연광에 가까울수록 주변 광원의 간섭이 적어 선별효율이 우수한 것으로 조사되었다. 실험결과 투입 컨베이어 벨트의 속도 800 mm/sec에서 순도 98.8%, 회수율 98.1%로 조사되었으며, 시료크기 20~30 mm에서 순도 및 회수율은 각각 98.2%, 98.4%로 조사되었다. 회수물의 순도 및 선별효율은 컨베이어 벨트의 속도가 느릴수록, 시료의 크기가 클수록 향상되는 것으로 조사되었다. 그러나, 본 색상 자동선별 시스템의 처리용량 및 폐내화재의 재활용성 등을 고려할 경우 최적의 선별조건은 색온도 6,500K, 컨베이어 벨트 속도 1,000 mm/sec, 시료 크기 20mm이하인 것으로 판단된다. 카메라 해상도를 고정하고 인지 영역을 좁게 하여 시료 크기 -10 mm, 벨트컨베이어 속도 1,000 mm/sec에서 순도 97%이상, 회수율 및 선별효율이 각각 98%, 96%이상인 것으로 나타났으며, 동일해상도에서 인지영역이 좁을수록 순도 및 선별효율을 높일 수 있는 것으로 조사되었다.
