  • The tracking performance of a big parabola tracking antenna system for tracking and receiving of the signal from the vehicle is impacted by many factors of the internal and the external of the system. In this paper, we analyze the tracking error due to the radio refraction in the application of the tracking and positioning of the vehicle by using radio frequency. The real measurement data are used for the analysis which had been acquired by using GPS and the tracking systems of C- and S-band frequencies in NARO Space centre. To verify the correlation between the tracking errors measured and the radio refraction, we review the error factors and the accuracies of the tracking systems, and the characteristics of the refractivity. The analysis shows that there are angular errors which are due to the radio refraction and not to be neglected, compared to the accuracies of the tracking systems, in case of low elevation angle less than 10 degrees. Also, the tracking errors depend on the target altitude as well as the elevation angle for the case of the target in the troposphere. It is recommended to correct the tracking angle considering the target altitude and elevation angle for the precise target positioning.

  • In this paper, the refraction angles and the critical angles of metamaterials which is assumed by the Drude model are analytically studied. To analyze the electromagnetic reflection and the transmission properties of metamaterial slab, we used "-1" for the permeability and the permittivity at 30 GHz in Drude model for metamaterials in this paper, respectively. Due to the variation of signes of material constants for frequency ranges in Drude model, the derived refraction angle and the critical angles for each frequency ranges are differently observed. The results in this paper show that the properties the refraction angles and the critical angles for the broadband in metamaterials can be used to understand the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials and microwave applications.

  • A critical angle method was used to measure the index of refraction of a solid medium when an air gap between the prism and the medium is present. The gap effect was analyzed both numerically and experimentally. Since the total internal reflection is severely disturbed by the large gap, determination of the critical angle and the resulting refractive index becomes ambiguous and inaccurate. By using an index matching fluid, we could determine the index of refraction with an uncertainty of ${\pm}2{\times}1^{-3}$ even when the gap is as large as 1 ${\mu}m$.

  • We introduce OBS and sonobuoy systems which are the typical wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic recorders made by KORDI for the investigation of crustal structure and the sediment/basement structure in the coastal area. These recording devices are examined for their usage through the test survey. The normal operation of these devices were proved and good recordings were obatined. The head waves are recognized in the sonobuoy records, which shows the possibility of velocity structure survey by the refraction and/or tomography method.

  • We investigated domains and conoscope under the polarizing microscope and the index of refraction on the c-plate GMO which has the ferroelectric and ferroelastic phase at room temperature. To observed the change of refractive index in connection with domain, we developed an apparatus to obtain the refractive index by measuring the Brewster's angle. The resolution of the minimum rotation angle of this apparatus is $0.001^{\circ}$. To obtain the refractive index map on the sample, the moving distance of XY stage loaded sample holder is 60 mm and the minimum moving distance is 0.002 mm. Also, To obtain the indicatrix for single crystal, vertical turntable with sample holder and XY stage was loading on horizontal turntable. The minimum resolution angle of this vertical turntable is $0.001^{\circ}$. We measured the refractive index of transparent materials such as ferroelectrics. In the case of $Gd_{2}(MoO_{4})_{3}$, the Brewster angle is $62.11^{\circ}$ and then, the refractive index is 1.8895 by using He-Ne Laser. Also the refractive distribution of c-plate GMO was obtained with $400{\mu}m{\times}120{\mu}m$.

  • This study intends to assess the defect in the weld zone of titanium grade 2 plate in terms of acoustical anisotropy based on the angle beam method. Depending on the rolling direction, the ratio of wave velocity was found to be 1.08 and the difference in the angle of refraction was more than seven degrees, confirming the presence of acoustical anisotropy. Thus for measuring the length of defect in the weld zone of the titanium plate (thickness of 10mm), the distance amplitude characteristics curves of titanium, TDACC-R and TDACC-T were constructed for the measurements in consideration of the acoustical anisotropy on CRT of the ultrasonic testing equipment. As a result, when the distance amplitude characteristics curve corresponds to the rolling direction, the length of defect was close to the actual measurement within 1mm and when different, the difference was found to be over 4mm. It was affirmed that the acoustical anisotropy should be taken into consideration when measuring the length of defects in the weld zone of the titanium plate with the presence of acoustical anisotropy.

  • A simple numerical refraction model is presented. The model takes into account refraction, shoaling and bottom dissipation. Eikonal equation and equation of energy conservation are discretized by an explicit finite-difference method, which provides wave angle and height at each grid point, respectively. Applications of the model were made to simple geometries as well as complex geometries, and some advantages on computing time and stability have been observed.

  • Mine detection has been mainly studied with images of the forward-looking sonar. Forward-looking sonar assumes the propagation path of the sound wave as a straight path, creating the surrounding images. This might lead to errors in the detection by ignoring the refraction of the sound wave. In this study, we propose a mine localization method that can robustly identify the location of mines in an underwater environment by considering the refraction of sound waves. We propose a method of estimating the elevation angle of arrival of the target echo signal in a single receiver, and estimate the mine location by applying the estimated elevation angle of arrival to ray tracing. As a result of simulation, the method proposed in this paper was more effective in estimating the mine localization than the existing method that assumed the propagation path as a straight line.

  • Numerical experiments have been conducted using the nonlinear combined refraction-diffraction model, in order to analyze the generation characteristics of stem wave, which is formed by the interaction between vertical structure and the oblique incident waves. The results of stem wave are discussed through the stem wave height distribution along/normal vertical structure, under the wide range of incident wave conditions-wave heights, periods, depths, and angles. Under the same wave height and period, the larger the incident wave angle, the higher the stem wave heights. According to the results of wave height distribution, in front of vertical structure, the maximum of stern wave heights occurs in the location bordering the vertical wall. Furthermore, the most significant result is that stem waves occur under the incident angles between $0^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$, and the stem wave height ratio has the maximum value, which is approximately 1.85 times the incident wave height when the incident wave angle becomes $23^{\circ}$.
