  • Aliquid crystal (LC) device switchable between the reflective and transmissive modes without sub-pixel division is proposed. By using dye-doped nematic LCs for the top LC layer, transflective displays with high reflectance were realized. It is expected that the proposed device can be applied to high-reflectance transflective devices for outdoor applications.

  • Reflective holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal(HPDLC) device has a multilayer structure consisting of alternate layers of polymer and liquid crystal droplets. Periodic modulation of a refractive index reflects light of a specific wavelength in accordance with Braggs law. Samples cured isotropically were illuminated with an Argon-ion lase at 514nm. We optimized the reflcetion efficiency of HPDLC as a function of monomer functionality, LC composition and irradiation intensity. The properties of the HPDLC films were observed by UV-visible spectroscopy. We found that the maximum reflection efficiency depends on the monomer functionality, LC composition, and laser intensity. We expect these films could be used in full-color reflective display by stacking them to obtain a mixture of colors.

  • We have developed a new type of transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a single cell gap and a single LC mode. In our transflective configuration, a single LC mode of a 60$^{\circ}$ twisted nematic LC was used for both transmissive and reflective applications. The measured electro-optic characteristics of our transflective LC cell agree well with numerical simulation results. Moreover, the transmittance was found to show similar behavior to the reflectance.

  • A flexible reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) is fabricated on plastic substrates by using the pixel isolation method. The polymer walls between pixels and the polymer layers in the pixels are formed by two-step UV irradiation. Electro-optical response of the ChLCD with polymer wall and layer is studied and compared with conventional bistable ChLCD cells.

  • We demonstrate a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD), doped with a chiral agent to produce a low helical twisting power, in a multimode configuration consisting of the homogeneous alignment and the hybrid alignment. The multimode transflective LCD with a single cell gap was fabricated using a single-step photoalignment technique with a self-masking process of an array of metal reflectors in the reflective region. In our configuration, the electro-optical disparity between the transmissive region and the reflective region was found to be significantly reduced by the low helical twisting power of the chiral dopant.

  • We report a method for simultaneous measurements of cell gap, twist angle, birefringence dispersion of liquid crystal (LC) material and alignment directions in filled reflective LC cells. The method is based on spectral measurements of the LC cell reflectivity for three orientations ($0^{\circ},45^{\circ},90^{\circ}$) of the exit polarizer and may be applied for LC cells with low and high gaps.

  • We propose a new optical configuration of a hybrid-aligned nematic liquid crystal cell for reflective displays, which consist of a biaxial film for obtaining wide viewing angle and a half-wave film for achieving high contrast. As a result, we can achieve wide viewing angle of (80( for the horizontal direction and (50( for the vertical direction and uniform reflection spectrum.

  • We proposed a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using a vertically aligned (VA) liquid crystal cell and circular polarizer. The conventional VA transflective LCDs have problems that there required several compensation films and voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other. To solve these problems, we used circular polarizer and optimized the condition of insulator thickness in the transmissive part and reflective part. Also, we used the patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode for wide viewing angle in transmissive part. Consequently, this device realized transflective LCD with a single cell gap and single gamma curve.

  • We report flexible, bistable cholesteric displays utilizing polyester (PET) substrates with printed internal black electrodes. The black electrodes consist of carbon ink dispersed in butyl carbitol using a patented roll-to-roll gravure-offset printing. A transparent conducting polymer printed on PET serves as the counter electrode. The electro-optic material is a chiral nematic mixture dispersed in a low-concentration polymer binder. The device can be switched between scattering (black) and reflective (vibrant green) states upon application of an electric pulse. The internal black electrode enhances the contrast of the display and simplifies the roll-to-roll manufacture of flexible displays.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value of the cell is $0.289{\mu}m$, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than $3{\mu}m$ when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114% for an incident light 550nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7%. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $120^{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.
