Optical properties of the tobacco leaves were determined. Surface colors and reflectance characteristics of the flue-cured variety and the Burley variety with thin and thick leaves were measured. Color was measured by CIE colorimeter and reflectance was measured with a laboratory built reflectance meter utilizing optical bandpass filters whose center wavelengths are from 400 to 700 nm at intervals of 50 nm. The resulting data indicated that the measured color and reflectance would be useful in inspecting tobacco. However no single optical data could be used to successfully grade tobacco leaves.
Color characteristics of pig ${\times}$ wild boar meat were determined with a fiber-optic spectrophotometer. The spectrophotometric characteristic of reduced-myoglobin observed after cutting immediately changed to the spectrophotometric characteristic of oxymyoglobin after 15 minutes of cutting. The spectrophotometry at 400 to 700 nm after 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes of cutting changed slightly. Compared with M. longissimus thoracis, M. rhomboideus had higher reflectance around 400 nm and from 650 to 1,100 nm and M. spinalis was lower in the visible light region after 60 minutes of cutting. The pig ${\times}$ wild boar meat was similar in reflectance shape with pork but was lower in intensity. The differences depended on the anatomical location. The M. rhomboideus from pig ${\times}$ wild boar had greatly lower reflectance than that from pig, the M. longissimus thoracis reflectance was lower, but M. spinalis reflectance hardly differed. These results showed that pig ${\times}$ wild boar meat had no special characteristic of blooming but had distinguishing characteristic of meat color among anatomical locations.
The electro-optical characteristics of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon (hereinafter "LCOS") micro-display on vertically alignment (VA) mode were studied depending on various cell gaps. 5 different cell gaps, such as $1.4{\mu}m,\;1.8{\mu}m,\;2.1{\mu}m,\;2.4{\mu}m$ and $2.8{\mu}m$, were selected. The reflectance-voltage (R-V) characteristics, distributions of reflected light and reflectance were calculated with 3-dimmensional LC code. At the center of cell, the smallest $1.4{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the lowest reflectance and the largest $2.8{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the highest reflectance due to the surface anchoring effect. In case of $2.1{\mu}m$ cell gap, the sum of reflectance overall cell was the highest value. Considering the reflectance and RV curve characteristic, the optimized cell gap was $2.1{\mu}m$.

The deterioration of agricultural environment, which is characterized by dryness and desertification of land, is one of the main reasons which explain the recent decrease of land productivity. To solve these environmental problems, it is very important to make clear the mechanism between soil, water, vegetation and temperature. The main objective of this study is to provide a soil surface information, which represent a soil reflectance spectrum, by remote sensing technology. The soil reflectance of the soil was measured using a spectro-radiometer in the wavelength range from 300nm to 1100nm. The results suggest that the reflectance properties of soils are related to their mineral composition and soil moisture. Increasing soil moisture resulted in an decrease in the rate of reflectance which leads to parallel curves of soil reflectance spectra.
Information on the area and spatial distribution of crop fields is needed for biomass production, arrangement of water resources, trace gas emission estimates, and food security. The present study aims to monitor crops status during the growing season by estimating its aboveground biomass and leaf area index (LAI) from field reflectance taken with a hand-held radiometer. Field reflectance values were collected over specific spectral bandwidths using a handheld radiometer(LI-1800). A methodology is described to use spectral reflectance as indicators of the vegetative status in crop cultures. Two vegetation indices were derived from these spectral measurements. In this paper, first we analyze each spectral reflectance characteristics of vegetation in the order of growth stage. Vegetation indices (NDVI, GNDVI) were calculated from crop reflectance. And assess the nature of relationships between LAI and VI, as measured by the in situ NDVI and GNDVI. Among the two VI, NDVI showed predictive ability across a wider range of LAI than did GNDVI. Specific objectives were to determine the relative accuracy of these two vegetation indices for predicting LAI. The results of this study indicated that the NDVI and GNDVI could potentially be applied to monitor crop agriculture on a timely and frequent basis.
This study attempts to analyze the relationship between forest volume and age based on 5th NFI data and spectral characteristics of satellite imagery using ASTER sensor in Korea. Forest stand volume and age had the negative correlation with the spectral reflectance in all of the band (Blue, Green, Red, SWIR). With increasing of stand volume and age, spectral reflectance decrease. The spectral reflectance of band1 showed the highest correlation between stand volume and spectral reflectance among the VNIR wavelength. The spectral reflectance band 1, 2 (visible wavelength) and stand age have high correlation compared to other bands. The correlation coefficients between forest volume and vegetation indices have low relationship. This result indicates that the reflectance of blue band may be important factor to improve the potential of optical remote sensing data to estimate forest volume and age.

The objective of this research was to find an indirect method to estimate spectral reflectance and NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) efficiently, using the spectroradiometer and NOAA AVHRR satellite data. For collecting RS base data, used spectro-radiometer that measures reflection characteristics between 300~1,100nm was used and measured the reflection of vegetation from paddy rice during the growing season at Chungbuk national university's farm in 2002. The feasibility of detecting the temporal variation in the spectral reflectance and NDVI in paddy rice were conducted on eight growth stages. AVHRR data were collected in eight different months over a one year period in 2002. The results were compared with those obtained by analyzing NDVI characteristics. The spectral reflectance and NDVI of paddy rice have a great effect on the growth condition. Considerably, NDVI was increased by developing muscle fiber tissue at the near infrared wavelength until the Booting stage. Then the NDVI increased until the Maturity stage and then decreased until harvest. The highest month was at July and the lower month was at March. The difference NDVI analysis using March and another months data was conducted, the results were provided information on the growth condition of crops.
The characteristics of a bimetallic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chip were investigated to detect a tumor biomarker, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The linewidth and the tangential slope of the reflectance curve of the bimetallic SPR chip was compared with those of the reflectance curve of a conventional gold (Au) SPR chip. The changes in reflectance in response to the variation in CEA in the critical concentration range were analyzed at an angle where the tangential slope of the reflectance curve was maximum. From linear regression analysis, the sensitivity of the bimetallic SPR chip with respect to the CEA in critical concentration was obtained.

Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) has been widely studied for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study conducts numerical simulation for the single and bimetallic layer SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix(MBIM) method to investigate the influence of wave interference and complex refractive indices of materials on optical characteristics such as reflectance and optical phase shift which are used for sensing. First, calculated reflectances are compared with experimental data for validation. In addition, in the single film structures this study finds out the appropriate film thicknesses with minimum reflectance for cases of gold film and silver film. For a bimetallic silver-gold film structure, in particular, the bimetallic film thicknesses that has the minimum reflectance are found 36 nm for silver and 5 nm for gold. From the results, the use of phase shift would be useful compared to reflectance in determining the SPR configuration because the phase shift becomes more sensitive than reflectance.
In this study, the effects of powder size and composition on the reflectance of Al-Si based alloys are presented. First, the reflectance of Al-Si bulk and powder are analyzed to confirm the effect of powder size. Results show that the bulk has a higher reflectance than that of powder because the bulk has lower surface defects. In addition, the larger the particle size, the higher is the reflectance because the interparticle space decreases. Second, the effect of composition on the reflectance by the changing composition of Al-Si-Mg is confirmed. Consequently, the reflectance of the alloy decreases with the addition of Si and Mg because dendrite Si and $Mg_2Si$ are formed, and these have lower reflectance than pure Al. Finally, the reflectance of the alloy is due to the scattering of free electrons, which is closely related to electrical conductivity. Measurements of the electrical conductivity based on the composition of the Al-Si-Mg alloy confirm the same tendency as the reflectance.
