Centrifugal pumps consume considerable amount of energy in various industrial applications. Therefore, improvement of the efficiency of these machines has become a major challenge. Cavitation is a phenomenon which decreases the pump efficiency and even causes structural demage. Hence, the goal of this paper is to investigate the cavitation problem in the single-stage and double-stage centrifugal pumps. The Volume of Fraction (VOF) method has been used for the numerical simulations together with Rayliegh-Plesset model for the gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the pump. In order to capture the turbulent phenomena, the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has been adopted, and the simulations have been done as unsteady cases. In addition, the motion of the rotating parts has been simulated using Multi Reference Frame(MRF) method. The results are presented and compared in terms of hydraulic head and NPSH for both the single-stage and double-stage pumps. The H-Q curves show the effects of cavitation on decreasing the pumps performances.
This study is to develop an information security management model(ISMM) for small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs). Based on extensive literature review, a five-pillar twelve-component reference ISMM is developed. The five pillars of SME's information security are: centralized decision making, ease of management, flexibility, agility and expandability. Twelve components are: scope & organization, security policy, resource assessment, risk assessment, implementation planning, control development, awareness training, monitoring, change management, auditing, maintenance and accident management. Subsequent survey designed and administered to expose experts' perception on the importance of these twelve components revealed that five out of tweleve components require relatively immediate attention than others, especially in SME's context. These five components are: scope and organization, resource assessment, auditing, change management, and incident management. Other seven components are policy, risk assessment, implementation planning, control development, awareness training, monitoring, and maintenance. It seems that resource limitation of SMEs directs their attention to ISMM activities that may not require a lot of resources. On the basis of these findings, a three-phase approach is developed and proposed here as an SME ISMM. Three phases are (1) foundation and promotion, (2) management and expansion, and (3) maturity. Implications of the model are discussed and suggestions are made for further research.
With increasing requirements for the less harmful exhaust emissions and the better fuel economy, the conventional injectors in gasoline engines can be replaced by the air shrouded injector in order to provide improved combustion in engine operations. To find out the optimal shape of air shrouded atomizer attached to the conventional injector nozzle, the critical design parameters such as droplet size, fuel and air inlet angles, and injection angles were investigated based on experimental analyses. To explain the characteristics of fuel atomization, these experimental approaches were carried out using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) system. The droplet sizes of injected air fuel mixture were obtained by using the beam diffraction phenomenon. In order to improve the atomization effect, the various atomizers were investigated. The Saute. Mean Diameter (SMD) measured at the predetermined locations outside the atomizer represented the performance of fuel atomization. The experimental results show that the design factors and atomization mechanism needed for developing air shrouded injectors. The suggested design parameters in this paper can be a useful reference in the early design stage.

An approximate analytical solution for the initial transient process of close-contact melting occurring between a phase change material kept at its melting temperature and an isothermally heated flat surface is derived. The model is so developed that it can cover both rectangular and circular cross-sectional solid blocks. Normalization of simplified model equations in reference to the steady solution enables the solution to be expressed in a generalized form depending on the liquid-to-solid density ratio only. A selected result shows an excellent agreement with the previously reported numerical data, which justifies the present approach. The solution appears to be capable of describing all the fundamental characteristics of the transient process. In particular, dependence of the solid descending velocity oft the density ratio at the early stage of melting is successfully resolved. The effects of other parameters except the density ratio on the transient behaviors are efficiently represented via the steady solution implied in the normalized result. A simple approximate method for estimating the effect of convection on heat transfer across the liquid film is also proposed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a simple method to measure magnetic susceptibility of arbitrarily shaped materials through MR imaging and numerical modeling. Materials and Methods: Our 3D printed phantom consists of a lower compartment filled with a gel (gel part) and an upper compartment for placing a susceptibility object (object part). The $B_0$ maps of the gel with and without the object were reconstructed from phase images obtained in a 3T MRI scanner. Then, their difference was compared with a numerically modeled $B_0$ map based on the geometry of the object, obtained by a separate MRI scan of the object possibly immersed in an MR-visible liquid. The susceptibility of the object was determined by a least-squares fit. Results: A total of 18 solid and liquid samples were tested, with measured susceptibility values in the range of -12.6 to 28.28 ppm. To confirm accuracy of the method, independently obtained reference values were compared with measured susceptibility when possible. The comparison revealed that our method can determine susceptibility within approximately 5%, likely limited by the object shape modeling error. Conclusion: The proposed gel-phantom-based susceptibility measurement may be used to effectively measure magnetic susceptibility of MR-compatible samples with an arbitrary shape, and can enable development of various MR engineering parts as well as test biological tissue specimens.

In design of a digital current controller for a 3cP PWM converter, its conventional model is used in obtaining i its discretized version. But, it has errors since the characteristics of SVPWM and time delay are not taken i into consideration. In this paper, the new reference frame model of a 3c~ PWJVI converter is proposed C considering these problems. Also, the direct digital current controller based on this model is designed without a any extra algolithm. A simple tuning algorithm for the proposed current controller is given to compensate the i inductaηce mismatch problem. Then simulation and experimental results show the validity of the algolithm.

In this paper, knowing a priori probability of phase offset between transmitted codes and reference codes in the receiver, we construct the state diagram of acquisition process of the direct sequence spread-spectrum communication system using the expanding window search. The scannings are performed from the cell with higher probability code epoch synchronization to that with lower one. We expand window size from initial value by r times of its previous size in each search, construct the corresponding the state diagrams, and derive average synchronization time using the Markov process and Mason's gain formula. Average synchronization times versus number of search n and detection probability $P_d$ are calculated.

The sensorless AC motor drive is a popular topic of study due to the cost and reliability of speed and position sensors. Most sensorless algorithms are based on the mathematical modeling of motors including electrical variables such as phase current and voltage. Therefore, the accuracy of such variables largely affects the performance of the sensorless AC motor drive. However, the output voltage of the SVPWM-VSI, which is widely used in sensorless AC motor drives, has considerable errors. In particular, the SVPWM-VSI is error-prone in the low speed range because the constant DC link voltage causes poor resolution in a low output voltage command and the output voltage is distorted due to dead time and voltage drop. This paper investigates a novel high-performance strategy for overcoming these problems in a sensorless ac motor drive. In this paper, a variation of the DC link voltage and a direct compensation for dead time and voltage drop are proposed. The variable DC link voltage leads to an improved resolution of the inverter output voltage, especially in the motor's low speed range. The direct compensation for dead time and voltage drop directly calculates the duration of the switching voltage vector without the modification of the reference voltage and needs no additional circuits. In addition, the proposed strategy reduces a current ripple, which deteriorates the accuracy of a monitored current and causes torque ripple and additional loss. Simulation and experimentation have been performed to verify the proposed strategy.

It has been proved that information and communication technology (ICT) solutions for personalized health (PHealth) and ambient assisted living (AAL) can support people in their daily life activities. Several solutions have been demonstrated to empower different levels of services through seamless data acquisition and specific users' interaction modalities. Usually services usability and accessibility are handled in the design process and are validated with small users' groups. Moreover, while service design and systems development have been extensively described in literature, service deployment methodologies are not properly addressed and documented. Proper reference guidelines are also missing. The most common methodologies like unified process (UP) or ICONX can cover only the design and the development of PHealth services without a clear description on the following phases such as deployment, service provision and maintenance. These phases present several risks to be taken into account right from the beginning of the implementation of PHealth or AAL services. This paper focuses on the description of a structured methodology to deploy PHealth services and how this process can be supported by integrated software routines and adapting the UP framework in particular the "Transition phase."

Effects of inorganic aerosols on the kinetics of the hydroxyl radical reactions with selected aliphatic alkanes have been investigated using the relative rate technique. The relative rates in the absence and presence of aerosols were determined for n-butane, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-octane, and n-decane. P-xylene was used as a reference compound. Inorganic aerosols including (NH$_4$)$_2$SO$_4$, NH$_4$NO$_3$, and NaCl aerosols at two different aerosol concentrations that are typical of polluted urban conditions were tested. Total surface areas of aerosols were 1400 (Condition I) and 3400 $\mu$$m^2$ cm$^{-3}$ (Condition II). Significant changes in the relative rates in the presence of the inorganic aerosols were not observed for the n-butanel/$.$OH, n-pentanel/$.$OH, n-hexanel/$.$OH, n-octanel/$.$OH, and n-decanel/$.$OH reactions versus p-xylenel/$.$OH reaction. These results suggest that the promoting effects depend on the semiconducting property of the aerosols and the nature of the organic compounds.
