  • This paper focuses on the stability and operability of a man-machine system considering a human operator. Some papers' main interest has been the stability only, but the operability such as fatigue is also the other main interest. In a man-machine system, feelings such as motional, visual, and kinesthetic are important since those enable operators to work easily or fatigue operators. A model of a man-machine system has been developed. Motional, visual, and kinesthetic feelings may be considered as feedbacked sensor signals. We also have quantified the degree of fatigue with respect to reference operation. This is a performance index to be optimized. Several methods are presented to optimize the degree of fatigue and the stability of the integrated system. Examples are presented to show that the usefulness of the proposed modeling method and fatigue mitigating algorithm.

  • A comparative DNS study of the ignition characteristics of dual-fueled reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) and stratification charge compression ignition (SCCI) is investigated using a 116-species reduced primary reference fuel (PRF) mechanism. In the RCCI combustion, two PRF fuels (n-heptane and iso-octane) with opposite autoignition characteristics are separatedly supplied and in-cylinder blended such that spatial variations in fuel reactivity, fuel concentration and temperature are achieved. In the SCCI combustion, however, just a single fuel (PRF50) is used such that only fuel concentration and temperature inhomoginieties are obtained. Because three factors, rather than only two as in SCCI combustion, govern the overall RCCI combustion, combustion timing and combustion duration or heat release rate of RCCI combustion are flexibly and effectively controlled. It is found that the overall RCCI combustion occurs much earlier and its combustion duration is longer compared to SCC combustionI. Moreover, the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) has a positive effect on enhancing RCCI combustion by inducing a shorter combustion timing and a longer combustion duration as a result of the occurrence of a predominant low-speed deflagration-combustion mode.

  • The feasibility study on burning Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in a conventional PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) was carried out by using the TRIFON code that was developed by the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Russia in 1992. TRIFON code uses updated ABBN Russian nuclear cross section library. The reference reactor is the Korea nuclear power plant unit 8 (YGN 2). The burning effect of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides was studied with UO$_2$(3.5 w/o)fuel assembly and MOX (4.44 w/o) fuel assembly. The loaded mass ratio of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides was obtained from the mass ratio of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in 10 year cooling spent fuel with average discharge burnup of 33 GWD/MTU. The effective transmutation rates of Am-241, 243 and Cm-244 nuclides in UO$_2$ fuel assembly were found to be higher than those in MOX fuel assembly. The result from TRIFON code was compared to that from CASMO-3/NEM-3D code system. For more reliable calculation of transmutation for MA(Minor Actinides) more sophisticated decay chain scheme of MA should be investigated and nuclear cross section library of MA should be considerably improved.

  • With increasing requirements for the less harmful exhaust emissions and the better fuel economy, the conventional injectors in gasoline engines can be replaced by the air shrouded injector in order to provide improved combustion in engine operations. To find out the optimal shape of air shrouded atomizer attached to the conventional injector nozzle, the critical design parameters such as droplet size, fuel and air inlet angles, and injection angles were investigated based on experimental analyses. To explain the characteristics of fuel atomization, these experimental approaches were carried out using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) system. The droplet sizes of injected air fuel mixture were obtained by using the beam diffraction phenomenon. In order to improve the atomization effect, the various atomizers were investigated. The Saute. Mean Diameter (SMD) measured at the predetermined locations outside the atomizer represented the performance of fuel atomization. The experimental results show that the design factors and atomization mechanism needed for developing air shrouded injectors. The suggested design parameters in this paper can be a useful reference in the early design stage.

  • Characterizing the behavior of nuclear reactor plate fuels is vital to the progression of advanced fuel systems. The states of pre- and post-irradiation plates need to be determined effectively and efficiently prior to and following irradiation. Due to the hostile post-irradiation environment, characterization must be completed remotely. Laser-based characterization techniques enable the ability to make robust measurements inside a hot-cell environment. The Laser Shock (LS) technique generates high energy shockwaves that propagate through the plate and mechanically characterizes cladding-cladding interfaces. During an irradiation campaign, two Idaho National Laboratory (INL) fabricated MP-1 plates had a fuel breach in the cladding-cladding interface and trace amounts of fission products were released. The objective of this report is to characterize the cladding-cladding interface strengths in three plates fabricated using different fabrication processes. The goal is to assess the risk in irradiating future developmental and production fuel plates. Prior LS testing has shown weaker and more variability in bond strengths within INL MP-1 reference plates than in commercially produced vendor plates. Three fuel plates fabricated with different fabrication processes will be used to bound the bond strength threshold for plate irradiation insertion and assess the confidence of this threshold value.

  • The objectives of this paper are: (1) to conduct the thermal analyses of the disposal cell using COMSOL Multiphysics; (2) to determine whether the design of the disposal cell satisfies the thermal design requirement; and (3) to evaluate the effect of design modifications on the temperature of the disposal cell. Specifically, the analysis incorporated a heterogeneous model of 236 fuel rod heat sources of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to improve the reality of the modeling. In the reference case, the design, featuring 8 m between deposition holes and 30 m between deposition tunnels for 40 years of the SNF cooling time, did not meet the design requirement. For the first modified case, the designs with 9 m and 10 m between the deposition holes for the cooling time of 40 years and five spacings for 50 and 60 years were found to meet the requirement. For the second modified case, the designs with 35 m and 40 m between the deposition tunnels for 40 years, 25 m to 40 m for 50 years and five spacings for 60 years also met the requirement. This study contributes to the advancement of the thermal analysis technique of a disposal cell.

  • Design and safety assessment of fuel pins for application in innovative Generation IV fast reactors calls for a dedicated nuclear fuel modelling and for the extension of the fuel performance code capabilities to the envisaged materials and irradiation conditions. In the INSPYRE Project, comprehensive and physics-based models for the thermal-mechanical properties of U-Pu mixed-oxide (MOX) fuels and for fission gas behaviour were developed and implemented in the European fuel performance codes GERMINAL, MACROS and TRANSURANUS. As a follow-up to the assessment of the reference code versions ("pre-INSPYRE", NET 53 (2021) 3367-3378), this work presents the integral validation and benchmark of the code versions extended in INSPYRE ("post-INSPYRE") against two pins from the SUPERFACT-1 fast reactor irradiation experiment. The post-INSPYRE simulation results are compared to the available integral and local data from post-irradiation examinations, and benchmarked on the evolution during irradiation of quantities of engineering interest (e.g., fuel central temperature, fission gas release). The comparison with the pre-INSPYRE results is reported to evaluate the impact of the novel models on the predicted pin performance. The outcome represents a step forward towards the description of fuel behaviour in fast reactor irradiation conditions, and allows the identification of the main remaining gaps.

  • In this paper we design the model following ${\mu}$-synthesis control system for optimal fuel-injection of diesel engine using genetic algorithms. To do this, we give gain and dynamics parameters to the weighting functions and apply genetic algorithms with reference model to the optimal determination of weighting functions that are given by D-K iteration method which can design ${\mu}$-synthesis controller in the state space. These weighting functions are optimized simultaneously in the search domain selected adequately. The effectiveness of this ${\mu}$-synthesis control system for fuel-injection is verified by computer simulation.

  • The control of the fuel to be introduced into the combustion chamber under idling and low-load conditions is known to be a problem in Diesel engines, owing to the relatively small fraction of the full-load fuel needed under light loads. Thus, particular attention should be paid to the behavior of the injector with reference to short injection events. This work presents the results of an experimental campaign carried out with two different types of common rail injectors, a standard injector and a modified one. The latter, coming from a simple modification realized in a standard injector, exhibits linear behavior between injected fuel and solenoid energizing time in the field of short injections. A direct comparison of the two injection behaviors suggests a possible way to better control short or pilot injections.
