  • In this paper, a study on finding an appropriate helper node that can help increase effective frame transmission rate for cooperative communications at ad hoc networks is carried out. Those researches from reference use the reactive helper node selection mechanism which starts its role after exchanging RTS and CTS frames between source and destination nodes, and are implemented into our simulator for performance comparison. System throughput and average channel access delay are used for performance measures and all communicating nodes are assumed to move independently within the communication range. It is anticipated that this research result can be used as basic information for designing a new efficient helper node selection scheme.

  • There is a great difference in mechanical behavior between design model one-time loading and step-by-step construction process. This paper presents practical computational methods for simulating the structural behavior of long-span rigid steel structures during construction processes. It introduces the positioning principle of node rectification for installation which is especially suitable for rigid long-span steel structures. Novel improved nonlinear analytical methods, known as element birth and death of node rectification, are introduced based on several calculating methods, as well as a forward iteration of node rectification method. These methods proposed in this paper can solve the problem of element's 'floating' and can be easily incorporated in commercial finite element software. These proposed methods were eventually implemented in the computer simulation and analysis of the main stadium for the Universiade Sports Center during the construction process. The optimum construction scheme of the structure is determined by the improved algorithm and the computational results matched well with the measured values in the project, thus indicating that the novel nonlinear time-varying analysis approach is effective construction simulation of complex rigid long-span steel structures and provides useful reference for future design and construction.

  • In this paper we propose a new conceptual slave clock system in which remotely located clock is synchronized to the reference clock by intermediation of the satellite time, show a probability of adoption to real network by experiments. This new proposed method has lots of structural advantages over the existing methods because all of the node clocks can be maintained with the same hierarchical quality. The measurement results show that the accuracy of the experimental slave clock system can be kept within a few parts in 1012 and that the MTIE (Maximum Time Interval Error) meets the ITU-T Recommendation G.811 for the primary reference clock A prototype system having fully automatic operational functions has been realized, and it is expected to be commercially used as a node clock for synchronization in the digital communication network in the near future.

  • In this paper, we investigate the vibration analysis of plates, using an 8-node shell element that accounts for the transverse shear strains and rotary inertia. The forced vibration analysis of plates subjected to arbitrary loading is investigated. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. To improve an 8-node shell element for forced vibration analysis, the new combination of sampling points for assumed natural strain method was applied. The refined first-order shear deformation theory based on Reissner-Mindlin theory which allows the shear deformation without shear correction factor and rotary inertia effect to be considered is adopted for development of 8-node assumed strain shell element. In order to validate the finite element numerical solutions, the reference solutions of plates are presented. Results of the present theory show good agreement with the reference solution. In addition the effect of damping is investigated on the forced vibration analysis of plates.

  • In this paper, a highly scalable real-time locating system which can measure location of fast moving targets is proposed. Within the system, the location service area is partitioned into grids with squares which is referred to as a macro-cell. Also, a macro-cell is further partitioned into $N{\times}N$ micro-cells. In a micro-cell, location reference nodes are placed on every vertex and an arbitration node is placed on the center. When a mobile node tries to measure its location, it should first communicate with the arbitration nodes for granting location measurement operation. Therefore, within a micro-cell, only one granted mobile node can calculate its location by a series of communication with location reference nodes. To evaluate performance of the proposed system, the system is modeled and simulated. The simulation result shows that the proposed system requires small communication time for location measurement operation and produces small location calculation error for fast moving targets.

  • Structural stress approach is well known as a mesh-size insensitive fatigue assessment method by using finite element analyses. It is, however, difficult to estimate the structural stress (SS) at weld end points due to stress singularities when shell elements are used. In this study, fatigue evaluations with longitudinal load carrying box fillet weldment under out-of-plane bending load have been performed by using virtual node method (VNM) in order to avoid the problem, which is called the weld end effect. Various combinations of virtual node parameters, such as reference point and virtual node locations, are investigated for the estimation of proper structural stress values applying VNM in a systematic manner. The appropriate guidance of virtual node parameter has been offered for the fillet weldment considered in the study. The structural stress values obtained by VNM have also been validated by comparing the result with finite element model including weld bead. Moreover, the fatigue strength of the fillet weldment based on the equivalent structural stress is shown to be consistent with the master S-N curve.

  • Sensor localization is one of the fundamental problems in wireless sensor networks. Previous localization algorithms can be classified into two categories, the GGB (Global Geometry-Based) approaches and the LGB (Local Geometry-Based). In the GGB approaches, there are a fixed set of reference nodes of which the coordinates are pre-determined. Other nodes determine their positions based on the distances from the fixed reference nodes. In the LGB approaches, meanwhile, the reference node set is not fixed, but grows up dynamically. Most GGB algorithms assume that the nodes are deployed in a convex shape area. They fail if either nodes are in a concave shape area or there are obstacles that block the communications between nodes. Meanwhile, the LGB approach is vulnerable to the errors in the distance estimations. In this paper, we propose new localization algorithms to cope with those two limits. The key technique employed in our algorithms is to determine, in a fully distributed fashion, if a node is in the line-of-sight from another. Based on the technique, we present two localization algorithms, one for anchor-based, another for anchor-free localization, and compare them with the previous algorithms.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the radial displacement of clinical target volume in the patients with node negative head and neck (H&N) cancer and to quantify the relative positional changes compared to that of normal healthy volunteers. Materials and Methods: Three node-negative H&N cancer patients and five healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. For setup accuracy, neck thermoplastic masks and laser alignment were used in each of the acquired computed tomography (CT) images. Both groups had total three sequential CT images in every two weeks. The lymph node (LN) level of the neck was delineated based on the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) consensus guideline by one physician. We use the second cervical vertebra body as a reference point to match each CT image set. Each of the sequential CT images and delineated neck LN levels were fused with the primary image, then maximal radial displacement was measured at 1.5 cm intervals from skull base (SB) to caudal margin of LN level V, and the volume differences at each node level were quantified. Results: The mean radial displacements were 2.26 (${\pm}1.03$) mm in the control group and 3.05 (${\pm}1.97$) in the H&N cancer patients. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the mean radial displacement (p = 0.03). In addition, the mean radial displacement increased with the distance from SB. As for the mean volume differences, there was no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion: This study suggests that a more generous radial margin should be applied to the lower part of the neck LN for better clinical target coverage and dose delivery.

  • This paper proposes an energy efficient ECG monitoring system by putting some intelligence on the sensor node to reduce the number of transmissions. The sensor node is mostly put into the processing mode and just connects the base station when necessary. Therefore, the transmission energy is greatly reduced while the energy for processing is increased a little bit. Our proposed ECG analysis method classifies ECG cycles by computing the Euclidean distance between the sensed ECG cycle and the reference ECG cycle. This work is a detailed and full explanation of our former work. Extended experimental results show that the proposed trade is very effective in saving energy and the Euclidean distance based classification method is accurate. Furthermore, the PowerTOSSIM energy simulation method is also demonstrated as very accurate in evaluating the energy consumption of the sensor node in our application scenario.

  • In this paper we propose a new conceptual system for a network clock in which all node clocks are simultaneously synchronized to the national standard by intermediation parameter of satellite time. Experiments have shown the possibility of its adoption by real networks. The new proposed method has various structural benefits, in particular all node clocks can be kept at the same hierarchical quality in contrast to the existing method. The measurement results show that the accuracy of the experimental slave clock system can be kept within a few parts In 1012 and the MTIE (Maximum Time Interval Error) sufficiently meets ITU-T G.811 for the primary reference clock. A prototype system with fully automatic operational functions has been realized at present and is expected to be directly used for communication network synchronization in the near future.
