  • The field experiment was conducted to find out the effect of inoculation of Rhizobium and interaction between amount of nitrogen and inoculating in soybean with 4 replicated split plot design. Main plot was 4 level of nitrogen 0, 2, 6, 12kg/10a and subplot was inoculation and uninoculation. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The yield of soybean did not show any significant difference among nitrogen level or between inoculating but yield of inoculated plot was a little increased than that of uninoculation. 2. At four leaves stage and flowering stage, the weight of nodules in root was decreased with incresing amount of nitrogen significantly and uninoculation caused a reduction compared with modulation significantly and those tendency was same in plant height, and those difference among treatment was more distinct in four leaves stage than in flowering stage. 3. After harvest, total nitrogen content in soil was not only increased with increasing nitrogen level but also was more increased in inoculated plot than in uninoculated plot except nitrogen 0kg/10a level. Inoculation of Rhizobium raised 15kg of nitrogen per l0a at 6kg nitrogen level compared with uninoculation.

  • Multifunctionality of agriculture has been an important international issue in terms of environmental benefits and public concerns. We calculated soil loss mass in national basis using the USLE, and attempted to evaluate its economical benefits by replacement cost method. Soil loss mass ranged from 1.4 to $18MT\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ was fairly fitted to measured values for 13 cropping systems. In national basis, the factors in USLE were evaluated as: 429.4 for rainfall and runoff factor. R, 0.15 for soil erodibility factor, K, 1.72 for topographic factor, LS, 0.275 for cover and management factor, C, and 0.856 for support practice factor, P. The soil loss estimated from upland farming using the USLE was $26.1MT\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, but soil loss from the bare soil was $110.8MT\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, the ratio of soil loss from upland farming to bare soil was 23 percents. Function of reducing soil loss in comparison with the bare soil was $84.7MT\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, of which national soil loss mass was 62.6 million MT per annum in south Korea. Agriculture economic replacement cost of soil loss reduction was 497 billion Wons(398 million dollars) for the cost of upland soil dressing. For conservational purposes to increase the environmental benefits of upland farming, the agricultural practice including contour, strip cropping, terracing and division ditches should be implemented.

  • The studies were carried out to examine the effect of soil improvement agents, such as lime, wollastonite and phosphate, in reducing the damage caused by hydrogen fluoride gas to the vegetative growth of rice. The yield loss, damage rate of the plant leaves, the fluoride and silicate concentrations of the plants were measured. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Of various levels of added lime and wollastonite, the best were found to be neutralized lime plus lime 150kg/10a, and wollastonite 150kg/10a. 2. Added fluoride increased the fluoride content of the plant and the damage rate of the plant leaves, and the yield was greatly decreased. 3. The silicate concentration at harvesting period was also increased by high amounts of fluoride in the plant during vegetative growth. 4. Increasing the amount of added lime increased the watersoluble silicate concentration in the soil. The silicate content of the plant showed the same tendency.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of lime and phosphorus on soil and yield of rice plants in acid sulfate soil. 1. Lime requirement plus phosphorus (20Kg/10a) plot showed 60% increased in yield. 2. The effect of increase was 36% in lime and 15% in phosphorus. 3. pH and Eh were reversed each other by lime application, and lime and phosphorus increased soil reduction. 4. Sixty two percent of root was distributed in top soil (0-5cm) of control plot while it spreaed in sub soil (5-10cm) with high level of lime and phosphorus plot. 5. Soil pH reached maximum at maximum tillering stage and decreased there after approching near to original pH. But lime requirement was about half of original one. 6. There was significant positive correlation between yield silica or phosphorus in soil, which were high with increase of pH. 7. The application of lime and phosphorus increased nitrogen content in plants. When contents of phosphorus in rice plants were high the yield of rice was increased.

  • In 1969, a pot experiment with four replications of 10 treatments including control(without potash) was carried out in order to study the effect of potash top-dressings in the condition of heavy nitrogen application on rice. The results obtained may be summarized as follows. 1. When potash was applied 70% as basic dressing and 30% as top-dressing at ear-formation stage, a considerable increase of the yield of paddy was obtained as compared to the treatment of the whole amount of potash as basic dressing. 2. The antagonism phenomenon of $K_2O$ contents with N contents in the plants appeared to be severe at the maximum reduction division stage and ear-formation stage is next. 3. $K_2O/N$ ratio gave a positive correlation with the yield components before heading and specially, $K_2O/N$ ratio at heading stage was considerably correlated with ripening percentage.

  • Soil erosion and sediment has been known as one of pollutants causing water quality degradation in water bodies. With global warming issues worldwide, various soil erosion studies have been performed. Although on-site monitoring of sediment loss would be an ideal method to evaluate soil erosion condition, modeling approaches have been utilized to estimate soil erosion and to evaluate various best management practices on soil erosion reduction. Although the USLE has been used in soil erosion estimation for the last 40 years, the USLE model has limitations in estimating event-based soil erosion reflecting rainfall intensity and rainfall duration for long-term period. Thus, the calibrated model, capable of simulating soil erosion using hourly rainfall data, was utilized in this study to evaluate the effects of rainfall amount and rainfall intensity on soil erosion. It was found that USLE soil erosion value is $3.06ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, while soil erosion values from 2006~2010 were $2.469ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $0.882ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $1.489ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $2.158ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $1.602ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively. Especially, soil erosion from single storm event for 2008-2010 would be responsible for 30% or more of annual soil loss. As shown in this study, hourly soil erosion estimation system would provide more detailed output from the study area. In addition, the effects of rainfall intensity on soil erosion could be evaluated with this system.

  • To evaluate the effect of companion plant (Phlox subulata and Glechoma hederacea var. longituba) on conservation of soil in slopped highland, coverage of crops and soil erosion were investigated with 3 different conditions. The coverage rate of Phlox subulata with Chinese cabbage cultivation was kept on approximately 100% from Chinese cabbage-transplanting to -harvest. The coverage rate of Glechoma hederacea var. longituba with Chinese cabbage cultivation was low at it's early stage, however, reached to approximately 100% at the time of Chinese cabbage harvest. In contrast, the coverage rate of Chinese cabbage cultivation without cover crop, and simultaneous transplanting with Chinese cabbage and cover crop were approximately 60%. Losses of soil and nitrate nitrogen were much lower in Phlox subulata with Chinese cabbage cultivation ($0.1{\sim}0.2ton\;ha^{-1}$, $0.2{\sim}0.4kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$) than those in Chinese cabbage cultivation without cover crop ($20.8ton\;ha^{-1}$, $2.1kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$), and simultaneous transplanting with Chinese cabbage and cover crop ($8.9{\sim}10.5ton\;ha^{-1}$, $1.5{\sim}2.2kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$). Cover plants suppressed the weed occurrence up to about 70%. Live mulching with cover plants set a good effects on weed suppression and reduction of soil and nutrient loss. Therefore intercropping with Phlox subulata will make great contributions to soil conservation in Chinese cabbage cultivated highland.

  • A column test was conducted to find out the effect of application of slaked lime, calcium sulfate, calcium superphosphate, and phosphoric acid on the solubility of lead in soil. The soil was adjusted to 310.8 ppm concentration of Pb and applied with amounts of calcium equivalent to 600, 1000, 2000 ppm as slaked lime; sulfate 144, 288, 432 ppm as calcium sulfate; phosphate 95, 190, 285 ppm as calcium superphosphate and phosphoric acid, respectively. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The increasing application of improvement agents reduced the amounts of water soluble Pb in soil. Phosphoric acid was the most effect among to the treatments. 2. The slaked lime treatment has the highest pH of soil and the lowest at the phosphoric acid one. The soil Eh has a reverse tendency the soil pH. 3. Water soluble Ca, $PO_4$ and $SO_4$ contents increased with increasing application amounts of improvement agents in soil. 4. $1N-NH_4$ OAC soluble Pb content in soil was a decreasing tendency in the order of calcium superphosphate, phosphoric acid, slaked lime, calcium sulfate and control after experiment.

  • Relation between soil salinity and forage yield of five upland crops such as sudan grass, sesbania, barnyard grass, corn and soybean was studied in the three reclaimed lands of Korea during two years from 2007 to 2008. Although plant number emerged was obtained satisfactory by desalting treatment, further growth of crops was sharply affected by re-salting process according to soil drying. Soil salinity varied place by place and changed constantly, crop growth was differently responded to soil salinity according to the specific conditions of the reclaimed lands. In the Iweon reclaimed land with higher soil water conductivity and sandy soil texture, crop growth and yield sharply decrease with increase of soil salinity. Relation between soil salinity and crop growth and yield was well expressed as logarithmic function. Surface soil EC to reach at 50% of growth reduction to the tallest height of crops was $5dS\;m^{-1}$ for soybean, $6dS\;m^{-1}$ for corn and $7dS\;m^{-1}$ for sudan grass, sesbania, and barnyard grass by logarithmic function. In the Hwaong and Yeongsangang reclaimed lands with low soil conductivity and finer soil texture, plant growth response to salt stress was statistically vague by mixing of harmful influence from flooding and wet injury. However, it is observed that crop growth and yield on the place of lower salinity was better than crop growth on the place of higher salinity. It is accordingly concluded that flooding control during summer rainy season is vary important as well as desalting process for good growth of soiling and forage crops in the newly reclaimed land from tidal flat.
