  • This paper investigates the characteristics of waves generated by a flap-type wave maker in a two-dimensional wave channel. Measurements are carried out for various water depths, wave heights, periods, and lengths capacitance-type wave height gages. The experimental results are shown to satisfy the dispersion relation of the linear wave theory. For waves with a small height and long period, the wave profiles agree well with those of the linear wave theory. However, as the wave height and period become higher and shorter, respectively, it is shown that the wave profiles measured in the present experiments are different from the linear wave profiles, and the measured wave heights are smaller than the target wave heights, which may be due to the non-linearity of the waves. As the wave progresses toward the channel end, the wave height gradually decreases. This reduction in the wave height along the wave channel is explained by the wave energy dissipation due to the friction of the side walls of the channel. The performance of the wave absorber in the channel is found to be acceptable from the results of the wave reflection tests.

  • This study was conducted to observe the effects of gravity and infra-gravity wave of detached submerged breakwater in the coast of Yeongnang-dong, Sokcho, as analyzing continuous wave data by performing field observations on the front area (W0) and rear area (W1, W2). Wave transmission coefficient ($K_t$) of submerged breakwater was analyzed in two parts, short-period wave (gravity wave) and infra-gravity wave. The wave energy reduction effect was analyzed and compared with the value of the design. In case of above wave height 2.0 m at the front area (W0) of the submerged breakwater, the short-period wave height at point W1 is reduced by about 65% and the short-period wave height at point W2 is reduced by about 59%. The depth of crest of submerged breakwater conducted in a sea area differs from the design, and the wave energy reduction effect is analyzed to be smaller than the design plan. The infra-gravity waves were amplified to 2.11 and 1.71 at the W1 and W2 points, respectively, and the wave height at W2 point was smaller than that at W1 point.

  • Purpose: To compare the success rates of performing only silicone tube intubation versus carrying out both conjunctival resection and silicone tube intubation. Methods: The subjects of this study involved 62 patients (96 eyes) between October 2015 and May 2017 who were diagnosed as having punctal stricture or nasolacrimal duct stenosis. Out of 96 eyes, 47 underwent only silicone tube intubation, and 49 underwent both silicone tube intubation and conjunctival resection. Three parameters were measured at 1, 3, and 6 months after the surgery: the area of the tear meniscus using RTVue-100 anterior segment optical coherence tomography, the height of the tear meniscus using a slit lamp microscope, and the subjective satisfaction of patients as a result of improved sympotms like epiphora. The surgery was considered successful when the patients' experienced the resolution of symptoms and reduction of the area and height of the tear meniscus. Results: The area of the tear meniscus, height of the tear meniscus, and subjective satisfaction of patients was superior in the group that underwent both silicone tube intubation and conjunctival resection compared silicone tube intubation only. Based on these results, the success rate of the surgery was 68.9% in the group that underwent only silicone tube intubation and 78.7% in the group that underwent both silicone tube intubation and conjunctival resection. Conclusions: The resection of relaxed plica semilunares seems to increase the success rate of silicone tube intubation through the reduction of the area and height of the tear meniscus. Therefore, after determining the degree of conjunctivochalasis, if it was found to be severe, a combination with conjunctival resection was expected to increase the success rate of the surgery.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this article is to evaluate a change o bone level on the sinus floor by a bone added osteotome sinus floor elevation (BAOSFE) technique, according to the amount of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM). And Changes in augmented bone height after BAOSFE procedure were also assessed for 6 months after the implant procedure. Materials and Methods: Forty eight single implants were placed in the posterior maxilla using BAOSFE technique. The implantation sites were classified into two groups according to the amount of grafted DBBM, 0.25 group (0.25g) and 0.5 group (0.5 g). Panoramic views or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were taken at the time of implant placement with BAOSFE and after at least 6 months to assess the bone level changes in the elevated sites with DBBM. Results: Alveolar bone level around all implants was stable clinically and radiographically during the follow-up. Mean augmented bone height was $5.21{\pm}0.94mm$ in 0.25 group and $6.92{\pm}1.19mm$ in 0.5 group. Statistically significant difference in augmented bone height was found in the comparison between the 0.25 group and 0.5 group at the time of surgery. There was a positive correlation between the length of the implant protruding into the maxillary sinus and the augmented bone height. After 6 months, mean reduction of augmented bone height was $0.50{\pm}0.34mm$ in 0.25 group and $0.41{\pm}0.30mm$ in 0.5group. There was no specific correlation between the reduction of augmented bone height and amount of grafted DBBM. Conclusion: Within the limit of this study, the amount of grafting materials and the protrusion length of implant into the maxillary sinus affect the amount of the augmented bone height.

  • Maximum drag reduction (MDR) in turbulent channel flow by polymer additives is studied by direct numerical simulation. An Oldroyd-B model is adopted to express the polymer stress because it is believed that MDR is closely related to the elasticity of the polymeric liquids. The Reynolds number based on the bulk velocity and the channel height is 40000. MDR in the present study is $44{\%}$ and this is in a good agreement with the Virk's asymptote. Turbulence statistics are also in good agreements with the experimental observation. In the 'large drag reduction', the decrease of turbulent kinetic energy is compensated by the increase of energy transfer from the polymer to the flow. Therefore, MDR is a dynamic equilibrium state of the energy transfer between the polymer and the flow.

  • Objectives: Selection of treatment methods for mandibular condylar fractures remains controversial. In this study, we investigated treatment methods for condylar fractures to determine the indications for open or closed reduction. Patients and Methods: Patients >12 years of age treated for mandibular condylar fractures with a follow-up period of ≥3 months were included in this study. The medical records of enrolled patients were reviewed for sex, age, fracture site, treatment method (open or closed reconstruction), postoperative intermaxillary fixation period, operation time, and complications. Radiological analysis of fracture fragment displacement and changes in ramal height difference was performed using computed tomography and panoramic radiography. Results: A total of 198 patients was investigated, 48.0% (n=95) of whom underwent closed reduction and 52.0% (n=103) underwent open reduction. There was no significant correlation between reduction method and patient sex, age, or follow-up period. No statistically significant difference between the incidence of complications and treatment method was observed. None of the patients underwent open reduction of condylar head fracture. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that open reduction was significantly more frequent in patients with subcondylar fracture compared to in those with a fracture in the condylar head area. There was no statistically significant correlation between the groups and fracture fragment displacement. However, there was a significant difference between the treatment groups in amount of change in ramal height difference between the fractured and the non-fractured sides during treatment. Conclusion: No significant clinical differences were found between the open and closed reduction methods in patients with mandibular condylar fractures. According to fracture site, closed reduction was preferred for condyle head fractures. There was no significant relationship between fracture fragment displacement and treatment method.

  • The assessment on characteristics of hydraulic behavior and water quality variations of underground reservoirs of buildings were studied. Firstly, it was thought that underground reservoir capacities($m^3$) of buildings should be not determinated by the uniform and same methods but be estimated on the basis of the dwelling areas on dominated households and their residential characteristics, because these characteristics influence significantly on actual water usages and patterns of buildings. Secondly, it was likely that the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs were affected from the their capacities, because the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs under $1,000m^3$ was 43 percent, on the other hand, that rate of underground reservoirs over $1,000m^3$ was 60 percent. Thirdly, through the field investigation, the retention time of drinking water in underground reservoirs were in the range from 0.3 day to 3.9 day. In addition to, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine were depended largely on the retention time of drinking water. When the retention time was under 24 hours, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine was 45 percent, and in case of over 24 hours, was 49 percent. Fourth, water level in underground reservoirs was averagely varied in the range from 0.1 m to 2.65 m at the height of underground reservoirs. If considered actual height of underground reservoirs, 37.6 percent of the height of underground reservoirs was only used. Consequently, the frequency of the inflow and outflow of drinking water in underground reservoir were very increased, and had an effect on the reduction of residual chlorine. Lastly, the investigations on hydraulic structure characteristics of underground reservoirs inside showed the locations of inflow and outflow of drinking water almost were in the opposite direction. And some buildings had several baffles in the middle. Nevertheless, their installations had no beneficial for the improvement of water quality.

  • Through the story height reducing method, cost saving can be implemented in many aspects. Recently, as one of PC floor system, HCS(Hollow Core Slab) has been applied in many project, and it is proved that it is excellent in productivity, economic efficiency, and workability as well. We developed a new composite beam(ANI Girder) which can be associated with HCS and reinforced with a truss-shape rebar and angle. As a result of actual application on underground parking building with HCS, it is confirmed that this system is effective in workability and story height reducing.

  • In this study, quantitative models were applied to case parks to estimate the carbon reduction by trees, which was compared and analyzed at the tree and park levels. At the tree level, quantitative models of carbon storage and uptake differed by up to 7.9 times, even for the same species and size. At the park level, the carbon reduction from quantitative models varied by up to 3.7 times for the same park. In other words, carbon reduction by quantitative models exhibited considerable variation at the tree and park levels. These differences are likely due to the use of different growth environment coefficients and annual diameter at breast height growth rates and the overestimation of carbon reduction due to the substitution of the same genus and group model for each tree species. Extending the annual carbon uptake per unit area of the case park to the total park area of Chuncheon a carbon uptake ranging from a minimum of 370.4 t/yr and a maximum of 929.3 t/yr, and the difference can reach up to 558.9 t/yr. This is equivalent to the carbon emissions from the annual household electricity consumption of approximately 2,430 people. These results suggest that the indiscriminate application of quantitative models to estimate carbon reduction in urban trees can lead to significant errors and deviations in estimating carbon storage and uptake in urban greenspaces. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for estimating carbon reduction in urban greening research, projects, and policies.

  • The steady aerodynamic characteristics of a wing flying over a channel are investigated using a boundary-element method. The present method is validated by comparing the computed results with the measured data. Compared with a flat ground surface, the channel fence augmented the lift increase and induced drag reduction. When the fence is lower than the wing height, the gap between the wingtip and the fence does not affect the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing much. When the fence is higher than the wing height, the close gap increased the lift. The induced drag is reduced when the wing is placed near the ground or at the same height as the fence. It is believed that present results can be used in the conceptual design of the high-speed ground transporters flying over the channel.
