  • In this paper we made a reliability analysis of power system pumps by using the dimensional reduction method which over comes the problem due to unavailability of enpugh data in the actual systems under many different operational environments. Hence a resonable method was proposed to determine the optimum maintenance interval of given pump in thermal power stations. This analysis was based on an actual data set of pumps for over ten years in thermal power stations belonged to Kyushu Electric Power Company, Japan.

  • Central venous stenosis is a rare cause of unilateral breast edema occurring in hemodialysis patients that needs to be differentiated from other differential diagnoses, including, but not limited to, inflammatory breast carcinoma, mastitis, lymphedema, and congestive heart failure. All reports of similar cases in the available literature have described improvement or resolution of the edema after treatment. Herein, we report and discuss the pathophysiology of breast edema formation in a patient who presented with massive left-sided breast edema 7 years after being diagnosed with central venous stenosis. Medical and minimally invasive therapy had not been successful, so she underwent reduction mammoplasty to relieve the symptoms.

  • At the stroke end of an electromagnetic circuit breaker, the high speed of the mover makes a huge impact at the contact point, which induces the rebound problem of the mover that causes a breaker failure. Thus, a speed reduction equipment is required to address such problems. This study suggests to use an electric brake reduces the speed at the end of the stroke. The proposed circuit breaker which adopts the electric brake has a variable speed reduction function such that the continued rebound phenomenon ceases to occur. The electric brake is designed by the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the circuit and motion equations are solved using Time Difference Method (TDM). The comparisons between the simulation and experiments demonstrated the usefulness and validity of this study.

  • The vibration of a LP turbine case may cause the failure of power generation and reduce the life of its facility. In this study we carried out on-site measurements of a LP turbine in order to find the cause of the vibration and conducted experimental and numerical modal analysis of the turbine case with its support frame. The measurement and the modal analysis show that the natural frequency of the turbine becomes close to 60 Hz due to the subsidence of the support. The elimination of the subsidence by shimming between the turbine and the support frame gave rise to the reduction of the vibration of the LP turbine case.

  • The invention of fusion wilding technology has brought on a revolutionary change in manufacturing industry which enables the construction of large scale high temperature plants in chemical, petrochemical and power generation industries. However, among the failure cases of high temperature components, premature failures of weldments have taken a large percentage that indicates the detrimental effect of welding on structural integrity. The accurate prediction of the high temperature behaviour of welded components is thus becoming increasingly important in order to realise an optimised design and maintenance of a plant life. In the present paper, recent research activities on high temperature behaviour of welded structures are briefly summarised. A local deformation measuring technique is proposed to determine the creep properties of weldment constituents. A damage mechanics approach is introduced to study the life reduction and ductility reduction due to the presence of a weld in high temperature structures. Finally, the high temperature creep crack growth in weldments is discussed.

  • Design optimization of layered plates bonding process is conducted by considering uncertainties in a manufacturing process, in order to reduce the crack failure arising due to the residual stress at the surface of the adherent which is caused by different thermal expansion coefficients. Robust optimization is peformed to minimize the mean as well as its variance of the residual stress, while constraining the distortion as well as the instantaneous maximum stress under the allowable reliability limits. In this optimization, the dimension reduction (DR) method is employed to quantify the reliability such as mean and variance of the layered plate bonding. It is expected that the DR method benefits the optimization from the perspectives of efficiency, accuracy, and simplicity. The obtained robust optimal solution is verified by the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • The 84m discharge line of moisture separator reheater(MSR) in Kori-2 had been suffered by excessive vibration from the beginning of power generation. In 1993, a complementary measure was taken to reduce the vibration level by adding several supports in the MSR pipeline. However, the piping vibration was beyond the allowable limit and an appropriate countermeasure was required to prevent the fatigue failure of the pipeline from the abnormal vibration. In this study, the vibrational characteristics of MSR pipeline and the countermeasure for abnormal vibration was investigated. Among the several vibration reduction methods, piping layout change by smoothing the pipeline was applied to the MSR pipeline in Kori-2. Applying the countermeasure, the vibration level was found to dramatically reduce from 17cm/sec to l.0cm/sec at the full-power operation condition.

  • When a foundation on the ground with tunnel is constructed, the ultimate bearing capacity of a footing is reduced by tunnel. In practice, structure may bate a considerable damage because of large settlement. This study shows that the settlement which is caused by variety of the ultimated bearing capacity leads fatal damages to the footing above tunnel. Therefore, it is necessary to study on the reduction both of the ultimate bearing capacity which leads a failure and of tolerable settlement which satisfies the safety of the building. For this reason, the variety of ultimated bearing capacity was analyzed using tub-dimensional elasto-plastic finite difference method in this paper. As a result, bearing capacity of the foundation above tunnel should be determined after establishing limit of allowable settlement and considering reduction-ratio of bearing capacity.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Barcol hardness (H) and flexural modulus (E) degradation of composite sheets subjected to flexural fatigue. The resin transfer molding (RTM) method was used to produce 3-mm-thick composite sheets with fiber volume fraction of 44%. The composite sheets were subjected to flexural fatigue tests and Barcol scale hardness measurements. After these tests, the stiffness and hardness degradations were investigated in the composite sheets that failed after around one million cycles (stage III). Flexural modulus degradation values were in the range of 0.41-0.42 with the corresponding measured hardness degradation values in the range of 0.25-0.32 for the all fatigued composite sheets. Thus, a 25% reduction in the initial hardness and a 41% reduction in the initial flexural modulus can be taken as the failure criteria. The results showed that a reasonably well-defined relationship between Barcol hardness and flexural modulus degradation in the distance range.

  • As an important part, the connections generally are important for the overall behavior of the structure and the strength and serviceability of the connection should be ensured. This paper presents the mechanical properties of membrane connections in tensioned membrane structure. First, the details of common connections used in the membrane structure are introduced. Then, the common connections including membrane seam, membrane-flexible edge connection and membrane-rigid edge connection are tested and the corresponding failure mechanisms are discussed. Finally, the effects of connection parameters on the connection strength are investigated and proper connection parameters are proposed. The strength reduction factors corresponding to different connection types are proposed, which can be references for the design and analysis of membrane structures.
