Pesticides with Reduced Risk Characteristics

  • During the past decade a reduced risk pesticide registration program has been in operation in the United States (Racke, 1992). The general principle of the reduced risk pesticide registration program in the U.S. is to give registration priority and accelerated approval to products with the most favorable characteristics as compared to currently available alternatives (EPA, 1997). The overall objective is to accelerate the introduction of these types of products so that marketplace choices rather than increased regulatory restrictions can lead to replacement of older products and technologies with newer ones. Under the program, pesticides classified as “reduced risk” products must meet several or all of the following criteria as compared with currently available alternatives: $\textbullet$ Reduced risks to human health $\textbullet$ Reduced risks to non-target organisms (e.g., fish, birds) $\textbullet$ Reduced potential for contamination of environmental resources (water, air, soil) $\textbullet$ Broadened adoption of integrated pest management

Two Phase Reduction of Carbonyl Compounds with Sodium Borohydride

  • Possibility of two phase reduction of carbonyl compounds to the corresponding alcohols was studied. Thus the 0.5 M ether solutions of the representative carbonyl compounds were treated with alkaline stabilized sodium borohydride aqueous solution at room temperature. Butyraldehyde was reduced rapidly within one hr., whereas other aldehydes tested; heptaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and 1-naphthaldehyde were reduced in 6-12 hr. 2-Heptanone was reduced much slowly; 87% in 48 hr., however, acetophenone was reduced moderately; 92% in 12 hr. and cycloalkanones were reduced rapidly (cyclohexanone in 0.5 hr., and cyclopentanone in 3-6 hr.).

  • A near-ring N is said to be strongly reduced if, for a ${\in}$ N, $a^2{\in}N_c$ implies $a{\in}N_c$, where $N_c$ denotes the constant part of N. We investigate some properties of strongly reduced near-rings and apply those to the study of left strongly regular near-rings. Finally we classify all reduced and strongly reduced near-rings of order ${\leq}$ 7 using the description given in J. R. Clay [1].

  • We research properties of ternary numbers and hyperholomorphic functions with values in $\mathbb{C}$(2). We represent reduced quaternion numbers and obtain some propertries in dual reduced quaternion systems in view of Clifford analysis. Moreover, we obtain Cauchy theorems with respect to dual reduced quaternions.

  • In this paper, a new reduced-order dynamic observer method is presented. Two types of observers are pronounced, namely, the model based reduced-order dynamic observer and the Luenburger type reduced-order dynamic observer. Useful design algorithms are also provided for each structure. The essential features of the proposed observed design methods are addressed to be qualified ad effective observers. The proposed method clarifies the duality between the controller and observer designs.

A New Approach to Reduced-Order Modeling of Multi-Module Converters

  • This paper presents a new approach to obtaining a reduced-order model for multi-module converters. The proposed approach can be used to derive the reduced-order model for a wide class of multi-module converters including pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters, soft-switched PWM converters, and resonant converters. The reduced-order model has the structure of a conventional single-module converter while preserving the dynamics of the original multi-module converter. Derivation procedures and the use of the reduced-order model is demonstrated using a three-module boost converter.

Effects of Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) Hydrates on Quality Characteristics of Reduced-salt, Reduced-fat Frankfurters

  • Abstract This study evaluated the effects of adding glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient (GM, carboxy methyl cellulose; GC, carrageenan; GI, isolated soy protein; GS, sodium caseinate) on the quality characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The pH and color evaluation showed significant differences, depending on the type of glasswort hydrate added (p<0.05). In the raw batters and cooked frankfurters, the addition of glasswort hydrate decreased the redness and increased the yellowness in comparison with frankfurters without glasswort hydrate. The reduction in salt and fat content significantly increased cooking loss and decreased hardness, tenderness and juiciness (p<0.05). Glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient improved cooking loss, water holding capacity, emulsion stability, hardness, and viscosity of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The GM treatment had the highest myofibiliar protein solubility among all treatments, which was associated with emulsion stability and viscosity. The GC treatment had higher values for all texture parameters than the control. In the sensory evaluation, the addition of glasswort hydrate with non-meat ingredient improved tenderness and juiciness of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. GM, GC, and GI treatments improved not only the physicochemical properties but also the sensory characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The results indicated that the use of glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient was improved the quality characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters.

  • We prove that the reduced free product of $k\;{\times}\;k$ matrix algebras over abelian $C^*$-algebras is not the minimal tensor product of reduced free products of $k\;{\times}\;k$ matrix algebras over abelian $C^*$-algebras. It is shown that the reduced group $C^*$-algebra associated with a group having the property T of Kazhdan is not isomorphic to a reduced free product of abelian $C^*$-algebras or the minimal tensor product of such reduced free products. The infinite tensor product of reduced free products of abelian $C^*$-algebras is not isomorphic to the tensor product of a nuclear $C^*$-algebra and a reduced free product of abelian $C^*$-algebra. We discuss the freeness of free product $II_1$-factors and solidity of free product $II_1$-factors weaker than that of Ozawa. We show that the freeness in a free product is related to the existence of Cartan subalgebras in free product $II_1$-factors. Finally, we give a free product factor which is not solid in the weak sense.
