  • In order to reduce risks from the Steam Generator Tube Rupture (SGTR) accident and to meet safety targets, various measures have been analyzed to minimize the amount of fission product (FP) release. In this paper, we propose an introduction of a Containment Filtered Venting System (CFVS) connected to the steam generator secondary side, which can reduce the amount of FP release while minimizing adverse effects identified in the previous studies. In order to compare the effect of new equipment with the existing strategy, accident simulations using MELCOR were performed. As a result of simulations, it is confirmed that CFVS operation lowers FP release into the environment, and the release fractions are lower (minimum 0.6% of the initial inventory for Cs) than that of the strategy which intends to depressurize the primary system directly (minimum 15.2% for Cs). The sensitivity analyses identify that refill of the CFVS vessel is a dominant contributor reducing the amount of FP released. As the new strategy has the possibility of hydrogen combustion and detonation in CFVS, the installation of an igniter inside the CFVS vessel may be considered in reducing such hydrogen risk.

  • To study the developments and variations of unsafe behaviors in nuclear power plants thus reduce the possibility of human-related accidents, this paper, based on the Game Theory, focused on the changes in benefits of the Department of Management, Operational and Emergency in a nuclear power plant, and established the expected revenue functions of these departments. Additionally, the preventive measures of unsafe behaviors in nuclear power plants were also presented in terms of these 3 departments. Results showed that the violations of the Operation Department (OD) and the Emergency Department (ED) were not only relevant with the factors such as their own risks, costs, and the responsibility-sharing due to accidents, but also affected by the safety investments from the Management Department (MD). Furthermore, results also showed that the accident-induced responsibility-sharing of both the OD and the ED would rise, if the MD increased the investments in safety. As a result, the probability of violation behaviors of these 3 departments would be attenuated consciously, which would reduce the unsafe behaviors in the nuclear power plants significantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the characteristics and spreading laws of parameters such as fire smoke, concentration of CO, visibility, and temperature at fire scene in high-rise residential buildings under the different conditions of fire doors and automatic fire extinguishing systems. Using Pyrosim to simulate diverse fire scenes in a high-rise apartment with corridors, to analyze the changes in those parameters. The results show that when a fire occurs, closing the fire-fighting corridor will increase the smoke temperature and concentration of CO in the stairwell, and reduce the height and visibility of the smoke layer; the automatic fire extinguishing system effectively suppresses the increase in the temperature of the fire smoke and the sedimentation of the smoke layer. Reasonable setting and operation of the automatic fire extinguishing system could effectively inhibit the spread of fire. Although closing fire corridor can slow down the direct upward spread of smoke through the corridor, it will force the fire smoke into the stairwell, which will seriously affect evacuation through the stairs. Therefore, in order to reduce risks, it is forbidden to close the fire doors of the firefighting corridor and stacking combustible materials in the corridor, Also, intensifying inspections and ensuring the normal operation of the automatic fire extinguishing system are indispensable. Based on the research results, the significance of installing fire-fighting facilities in the construction of high-rise apartments was discussed and proved.

  • The performance of water spray system installed to reduce risks of tunnel fire is investigated by a real tunnel fire test. In case of A class fire, Pool fire, and car fire, the nozzle of water spray has had a marvelous effect to reduce the temperature of hot smoke. And it is verified to have remarkable cooling effects when there is the air flow in a tunnel. Though this results, water spray system will be able to prevent a fire jump to decrease the air temperature in a tunnel and to protect tunnel facilities by the fire control.

  • Rialway passengers and public, workers typically have high potential on death and injury accidents, because they are to be frequently adjacent to train or train operation. In order to effectively reduce the risks associated with the passengers, the public, and the workers, a systematic risk assessment should be performed to evaluate the hazards that contribute to the accidents. This paper describes the effect of risk assessment web base system and the extension need of the classification of "The regulation of railway accident report and information in Korea", application for national or railway safety operator, sharing railway safety information.

  • Korean local governments have been planning for u-City construction with great efforts. Such efforts are needed in order to reflect the urban characteristics of each city, to promote local economic growth, and to have a sustainable operation model. Thus it is critical at an earlier stage to set a strategic direction based on urban environment analysis, which will lead to a feasible implementation of u-City. This paper derives issues and suggests improvement methods based on a case study on the USPs (u-City Strategy Planning's) of ten local governments. It is expected that the improvement methods will greatly reduce risks involved in u-City construction and contribute to better provided local-specific u-services.

  • There are a lot of trace gas of gaseous pollutants produced from farm animals. CO2 and CH4 are gases produced directly by the animal. NH3, N2O are produced from animal waste. Most of the effects of these gaseous pollutants on the farm animals have not been investigated in detail. CO2 emission from animal is very little. CH4 release from ruminant is also considered to be a significant factor in potential global warming. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions could be avoided by using organic or mineral fertilizer only as much as is needed by plant growing. This paper gives an overview about problems and solving strategies for possibilities for reduction of gaseous pollutants. The way to reduce the gaseous pollution risks from livestock systems are discussed.

  • General anesthesia is commonly used to facilitate dental treatment in patients with anxiety or challenging behavior, many of whom are children or patients with special needs. When performing procedures under general anesthesia, dental surgeons must perform a thorough pre-operative assessment, as well as ensure that the patients are aware of the potential risks and that informed consent has been obtained. Such precautions ensure optimal patient management and reduce the frequency of morbidities associated with this form of sedation. Most guidelines address the management of pediatric patients under general anesthesia. However, little has been published regarding this method in patients with special needs. This article constitutes a review of the current literature regarding management of patients with special needs under general anesthesia.

  • Assessment of noise exposed population is a method for checking the degree of environmental noise and social influence in order to reduce the risks such as annoyance and disturbance that are generated by environmental noise. Also, this method suggests the preferential noise reduction policy and action plan by accurately assessing the area that noise causes harm to human health. Recently, a noise map, which can predict noise in comprehensive areas, is used for the assessment of noise exposed population, breaking from the methods using existing measures. In particular, countermeasure for the noise can be considered more effectively by using assessment methods of noise exposed population for specific noise levels, areas, and building types which are the main input factors in noise maps. In this study, Assessment methods of noise exposed population by using 2D noise map are compared with those by 3D noise map.

  • Korean railway has run about 110 years since 1989 and played a great role of industrialization in Korea. It is known that rail transport systems have many advantages of being more safe, energy-efficient, and environment-friendly, as compared to other transportation systems. However, railway incidents are often attributed to the failure of safety management and critical to the efficiency of railroad industry. This study reviewed economic, financial, and general statistical information on Korea Railroad. Based on the statistical data, the effect of accidents on railroad management was analyzed. Correlation analysis revealed that railway accident had a negative effect on the gross profit of Korea Railroad. In order to reduce potential risks and incident rate, some recommendations are proposed. Actual or potential applications of this research include safety guidelines for improving efficiency of railroad industry.
