  • In this study, the nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) electrode for supercapacitor was prepared via hydrothermal method. Based on the nickel (Ni) foam, the electrode does not require any additional binder material or post-processing. Nickel nitrate (Ni(NO3)2) and hexamethylenetetramine (C6H12N4) were used for synthesis, and the synthesis condition was 12 hours at 80 ℃. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to analyze the structural characteristics of the electrode, and it shown that the nickel hydroxide was successfully prepared after only the one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The electrochemical properties were analyzed through the half-cell test. The prepared electrode shown a pair of oxidation/reduction peaks, indicating that the driving method included the redox reaction on the electrode surface. After the charge/discharge test, the specific capacitance was calculated as the value of 438 F/g at 3 A/g.

  • Solar energy conversion to hydrogen was carried out via a two-step thermochemical water splitting using metal oxide redox pair. To simulate the solar radiation, a 7 kW short arc Xe-lamp was used. Partially reduced iron oxide and cerium oxide have the water splitting ability, respectively. So, $Fe_3O_4$ supported on $CeO_2$ was selected as the active material. $Fe_3O_4/CeO_2$(20 wt/80 wt%) was prepared by impregnation method, then the active material was washcoated on the ceramic honeycomb monolith made of mullite and cordierite. Oxygen was released at the reduction step($1673{\sim}1823\;K$) and hydrogen was produced from water at lower temperature($873{\sim}1273\;K$). The result demonstrate the possibility of the 2-step thermochemical water splitting hydrogen production by the active material washcoated monolith. And hydrogen and oxygen was produced separately without any separation process in a monolith installed reactor. But the SEM and EDX analysis results revealed that the support used in this experiment is not suitable due to the thermal instability and coating material migration.

  • Direct electron transfer of hemoglobin (Hb) in the chitosan (CTS) and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (nano-$TiO_2$) composite films was achieved by using a room temperature ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ($BMIMPF_6$) modified carbon paste electrode (CILE) as the basal electrode. UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that Hb in the film retained the native structure. Electrochemical investigation indicated that a pair of well-defined quasi-reversible redox peaks of Hb heme Fe(III)/Fe(II) was obtained with the formal potential located at -0.340 V (νs. SCE) in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The electrochemical parameters such as the electron transfer coefficient (α), the electron transfer number (n) and the standard electron transfer rate constant ($k_s$) were got as 0.422, 0.93 and 0.117 $s^{-1}$, respectively. The fabricated CTS/nano-$TiO_2$/Hb/CILE showed good electrocatalytic ability to the reduction of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which exhibited a potential application in fabricating a new kind of third generation biosensor.
