  • In order to investigate the emission characteristics of the phosphorescent white organic light-emitting diodes (PHWOLEDs) according to various hole transport layers (HTLs), PHWOLEDs composed of HTLs whose structure are NPB/TCTA, NPB/mCP and NPB/TCTA/mCP, two emissive layers (EMLs) which emit two-wavelengths of light (blue and red), and electron transport layer were fabricated. The applied voltage, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency at a current density of $1 mA/cm^2$ for the fabricated PHWOLEDs were 7.5 V, 11.5 lm/W, and 15%, in case of NPB/mCP, 5 V, 14.8 lm/W, and 13.7%, in case of NPB/TCTA, and 5.5 V, 14.6 lm/W, and 15%, in case of NPB/TCTA/mCP in the hole transport layer, respectively. High emission efficiency can be obtained when the amount of hole injection from anode is balanced out by the amount of electron injection from the cathode to EML by using NPB/TCTA/mCP structured HTL.

  • We fabricated white organic light emitting device (WOLED) with the layered fluorescent blue material and phosphorescent green/red dye-doped materials. Addition of the non-doped phosphorescent host material between the fluorescent and phosphorescent light emitting layers provided the result of broadband white spectrum, with improved balance, higher efficiency, and lower power consumption. In our devices, there was no need of exciton-blocking layer between the each emission layer for the further confinement of the diffusion of excitons.

  • We demonstrated efficient white light emitting OLEDs with a single emissive layer structure, which was blue-emitting 1,4-bis[2,2-diphenylvinyl]biphenyl (DPVBi) doped with blue luminescent amino-substituted distyrylarylene amine (DSA-amine) and red luminescent [2,6-bis[2-[5-(dibutylamino) phenyl]vinyl]-4H -pyran-4-ylidene]propanedinitrile (DADB). Through the optimization of the device structure, the white light emission with full visible spectral range was obtained. Its CIE color coordinates was (0.32,0.42) at 10 $mA/cm^2$ and the external quantum efficiency, the luminance efficiency and the luminance yield were 3.7 %, 3.3 lm/W and 9.0 cd/A, respectively.

  • We studied the emission characteristics of white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), which were fabricated using a two-wavelength method. To optimize emission characteristics of white PHOLEDs, white PHOLEDs with co-doping and blue/co-doping emitting layer (EML) structures were fabricated using a host-dopant system. The total thickness of light-emitting layer was 25 nm and the dopant of blue and red was FIrpic and $Bt_2Ir(acac)$ in UGH3, respectively. In case of co-doping structure, applying micro lens array film showed efficiency improvement from the current efficiency 78.5 cd/A and power efficiency 40.4 lm/W to the current efficiency 131.1 cd/A and power efficiency 65 lm/W and blue / co-doping structure showed efficiency improvement from the current efficiency 43.8 cd/A and power efficiency 22 lm/W to the current efficiency 69 cd/A and power efficiency 32 lm/W.

  • We have investigated the feasibility of fabricating fine stripes using needle coating for potential applications in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To this end, we have employed an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution that has been widely used as a hole injection layer (HIL) of OLEDs and performed needle coatings by varying the process parameters such as the coating gap and coating speed. As expected, the stripe width is reduced with increasing coating speed. However, the central thickness of the stripe is rather increased as the coating speed increases, which is different from other coating processes such as slot-die and blade coatings. It is due to the fact that the meniscus formed between the needle tip and the substrate varies depending sensitively on the coating speed. It is also found that the stripe width and thickness are reduced with increasing coating gap. To demonstrate its applicability to OLEDs, we have fabricated a red OLED stripe and obtained light emission with the width of about 90㎛.

  • To study emission properties of white phosphorescent organic light emitting devices (PHOLEDs), we fabricated white PHOLEDs of ITO(150 nm) / NPB(30 nm) / TcTa(10 nm) / mCP(7.5 nm) / light-emitting layer(25 nm) / UGH3(5 nm) / Bphen(50 nm) / LiF(0.5 nm) / Al(200 nm) structure. The total thickness of light-emitting layer with co-doping and blue-doping/co-doping using a host-dopant system was 25 nm and the dopant of blue and red was FIrpic and $Bt_2Ir$(acac) in UGH3 as host, respectively. The OLED characteristics were changed with position and thickness of blue doping layer and co-doping layer as light-emitting layer and the best performance seemed in structure of blue-doping(5 nm)/co-doping(20 nm) layer. The white PHOLEDs showed the maximum current density of $34.5mA/cm^2$, maximum brightness of $5,731cd/m^2$, maximum current efficiency of 34.8 cd/A, maximum power efficiency of 21.6 lm/W, maximum quantum efficiency of 15.6%, and a Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.367, 0.436) at $1,000cd/m^2$.

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with single emissive layer structures using two fluorescent dopants were fabricated and the device was composed of ITO / NPB ($700{\AA}$) / MADN : C545T - 1.0% : DCJTB - 0.3% ($300{\AA}$) / Bphen ($300{\AA}$) / LiF ($10{\AA}$) /Al ($1,000{\AA}$). C545T and DCJTB were functioned as green fluorescent dye and red fluorescent dye under MADN as host material. Concentrations of C545T and DCJTB was changed in emissive layer of MADN. Optimized OLED device using two fluorescence dopants shows emission efficiency of 8.42 cd/A and luminescence of 3169 cd/$m^2$at 6 V with CIE color coordinate, (0.43, 0.50). Electroluminescence of optimized OLED showed two peak at 500 and 564 nm according to C545T and DCJTB. These results indicate that F$\ddot{o}$ster energy transfer energy transfer was from MADN to C545T and rather than to DCJTB continuously.

  • The properties of monomeric and dimeric salen-aluminum complexes, [salen(3,5-$^tBu)_2$Al(OR)], R = $OC_6H_4-p-C_6H_6$ (H1) and R = [salen(3,5-$^tBu$)AlOPh]C$(CH_3)_2$ (H2) (salen = N,N'-bis-(salicylidene)-ethylenediamine) as host layer materials in red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were investigated. H1 and H2 exhibit high thermal stability with decomposition temperature of 330 and $370^{\circ}C$. DSC analyses showed that the complexes form amorphous glasses upon cooling of melt samples with glass transition temperatures of 112 and $172^{\circ}C$. The HOMO (ca. -5.2~-5.3 eV) and LUMO (ca. -2.3~-2.4 eV) levels with a triplet energy of ca. 1.92 eV suggest that H1 and H2 are suitable for a host material for red emitters. The PhOLED devices based on H1 and H2 doped with a red emitter, $Ir(btp)_2$(acac) (btp = bis(2-(2'-benzothienyl)-pyridinato-N,$C^3$; acac = acetylacetonate) were fabricated by vacuum-deposition and solution process, respectively. The device based on vacuum-deposited H1 host displays high device performances in terms of brightness, luminous and quantum efficiencies comparable to those of the device based on a CBP (4,4'-bis(Ncarbazolyl) biphenyl) host while the solution-processed device with H2 host shows poor performance.

  • In this study, we prepared red organic light-emitting-diode(OLED) with a fluorescent dye(Sq)-doped and inserted between emission and cathode layer 1,3-bis(5-p-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)benzene (OXD7) or/and tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ($Alq_3$) layers for increasing electroluminescent(EL) efficiency. This inserting effect has been observed and EL mechanism characteristics have been examined. The hole transfer layer is a N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis-(3-methyl phenyl)-1,1'-diphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD), and the host and guest materials of emission layer is $Alq_3$ and bis[1-methyl-3,3'-dimethyl-2-indorindiylmethyl] squaraine (Sq), respectively. For the inserting of $Alq_3$, emission efficiency increased. But we can not obtained highly pure red emission owing to the emission of inserting $Alq_3$ layer. The inserting of OXD7 makes hole block and accumulate. Because of increasing recombination probability of electron and hole, highly pure red color can be held. Simultaneously brightness characteristics and emission efficiency could improve.

  • In order to express the natural color in organic light emitting diode(OLED), red, green, and blue luminescent materials are needed. While lots of red and green emitters are searched actively, not many useful blue emitters are found yet. It is due to the high energy gap for the blue emission. This research is about a synthesis of the blue emitting compound with high emission efficiency and thermal stability, which starts with carbazole and anthracene. Carbazole with bulky substituent, tert-butyl group, is connected directly to electroluminescent and thermally stable anthracene. The distance between the hole transporting group and the electron transporting group are studied for the relevance to the luminescence.
