Epiphytic algae are important components of marine ecosystems. Despite the importance of epiphytic algae in marine ecosystems, our knowledge of these taxa is still limited. The marine red algal genus Reinboldiella, which is distributed mainly in the northwestern Pacific region, is characterized by tiny thalli that are epiphytic on various other red algae. Six species of the genus have been reported in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. In this study, 50 Korean Reinboldiella specimens, previously known as Reinboldiella schmitziana, were collected from 11 localities and reexamined to verify their taxonomic status. We describe a new species, Reinboldiella koreana sp. nov., based on rbcL phylogeny and morphological observations. A total of four grateloupiacean species (Pachymeniopsis lanceolata, P. elliptica, Grateloupia turuturu, and G. asiatica) were identified as host species of R. koreana sp. nov. Due to the restricted host range of R. koreana sp. nov., a phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the cox1 marker to confirm the co-phylogenetic relationships between the epiphytic algae and their grateloupiaceanhosts. Two of the four cox1 haplotypes of R. koreana were found in different host species, regardless of which haplotype they were. It indicates that there are no co-phylogenetic relationships between R. koreana and host species.
In the present paper, seven marine algae collected from the coasts of Korea are described. The two blue-green algae, Coccochloris stagnina Sprengel and Entophysalis conferta (Kuetz.) Drouet and Daily, one brown alga, Ralfsia verrucosa(Aresch.) J. Ag., and the two red algae, Enelittosiphonia hakodatensis (Yendo) Segi and Symphyocladia pennata Okamura, are recorded newly in our country. The other two blue-green algae, Anacystis dimidiata (Kuetz.) Drouet and Daily and Phormidium tenue (Meneghini) Gomont, are recorded for the first time marine water in our country.
Properties of newly developed paper from Red Algae Pulp (RAP) were examined. The paper samples were prepared by mixing RAP fiber with wood fibers, HwBKP and SwBKP, to form a paper with $60g/m^2$ in weight. It was prepared in three to four different levels of refining degree and pressure so that it can reveal different bulk level in order to clearly compare the opacity at equivalent bulk for each furnish compositions. Printability of RAP fiber revealed superior effect on print through repression and initial ink absorption. Those properties are expected to improve further if printability improvement effect due to smoothness improvement is added.
Recently seaweed polysaccharides have been extensively studied for alternative energy application. Because their producing cost is high and efficiency low, their industrial applications have been limited. The main component of cell wall of red algae represented by Gelidiales and Gracilariales is agar. Red-algae agar or galactan, consisting of D-galactose and 3, 6-anhydro-L-galactose, is suitable for bio-product application if hydrolyzed to monomer unit. For the hydrolysis of algae, chemical or enzymatic treatment can be used. A chemical process using a strong acid is simple and efficient, but it generates together with target sugar and toxic compounds. In an enzymatic hydrolysis process, target sugar without toxic compounds generation. The objective of this review is to summary the recent data of saccharification by chemical and enzymatic means from red seaweed for especially focused on automobile industry.

The Erythropeltidales are a common group of small, mostly epiphytic, marine red algae. However, they are little known in Korea. Many of the described species of Erythropeltidales differ subtly in morphology, and often the morphological differences are due to the substrate or environmental changes. Integration of molecular data with standardized culture conditions has been recommended to account for these algae. A Madagascaria species was first collected from the western coast of Korea and was identified as Madagascaria erythrocladioides based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. Morphological characteristics conformed well with its original description, and the phylogenetic analysis based on rbcL sequence showed Korean M. erythrocladioides nests in the same clade with the original species described in Japan with a genetic distance of 0.0-0.1%. This species was isolated from a red alga, Pterocladiella capillacea, in laboratory culture. The thallus ontogeny and host preference were examined by a co-culture with 13 different species of algae. Results showed a relatively broad host preference in mono-spore attachment and epiphyte development of Madagascaria erythrocladioides. Mono-spores of M. erythrocladioides attached to most of the red algal hosts' surfaces but no crustose thalli developed on some of the algal hosts even after one month of co-culture.
The red alga Compsopogon caeruleus can generally be found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. In addition to its natural habitats, this species may be found in waters that receive abnormally hot water, e.g., from powerhouses. To date, the presence of C. caeruleus has not been observed in thermally polluted lacustrine ecosystems in Poland, which has a moderate climate. The thalli of this red alga were found growing on Vallisneria spiralis in Lichenskie Lake. Importantly, this paper presents a previously unknown relationship between the temperature (20, 25, 30, 35, and 40℃) and oxygen requirements of C. caeruleus (based on ex situ measurements of O2 consumption by thalli). Surprisingly, 35℃ can be the optimum temperature for C. caeruleus, and this temperature is higher than the values reported by some previous thermal analyses by approximately 10℃. Additionally, we reviewed and mapped the distribution of this nonnative and mesophilic red alga in natural / seminatural water ecosystems in Europe. Finally, we propose that the occurrence of C. caeruleus mature thalli can be a novel, simple and easy-to-recognize bioindicator of artificially and permanently heated waters in moderate climate zones by a regular discharge of postindustrial water.
Evidence is presented to demonstrate that the type of Delesseria kurilensis Ruprecht belongs to Congregatocarpus rather than Tokidadendron (both genera of the red algal family Delesseriaceae), and the new combination of Congregatocarpus kurilensis (Ruprecht) M.J. Wynne is proposed.
Four species of marine algae, 3 red and 1 brown algae, were newly found from southern coast of Korea including Cheju Island in the course of floristic study. amphiroa itonoi Srimanobhas et Masaki and Hypnea variabilis Okamura were collected from intertidal zone and the others, Aglaothamnion oosumiense Itono and Sphacelaria caespitosa Takamatsu were from subtidal zone.
The marine benthic algae of Gojeong-Ri was investigated in a floristic aspect. As a result, 34 species, 7 blue-green, 14 red, 6 brown and 7 green algae were identified as a summer flora from the area. Among them, Sirocoleum kurzii (blue-green alga), Ralfsia clavata (brown alga), Pseudulvella consociata and Cladophora speciosa (green algae) were known as new records to Korea.
