  • In order to review the recycling status of urban mine resources in Korea, metal consumption, metal stock reserves and metal scraps and wastes such as iron scrap, end of life vehicles(ELV), E-waste were surveyed. In making up the list of the metal consumption, the statistical data from the Korea Non-Ferrous Association, the Korea Iron and Steel Association, the HS code of Korea Custom Service, the symposium and the related companies were collected. Finally, "Principle uses and recycling potential of metals in the periodic table" by T.E.Graedel was introduced. This paper suggested the key point for development of urban mine resources.

  • Waste tires are increased by increasing number of automobiles, which are the symbol of the mordern society. The waste tires create the environmental, visual hazard and landfill space problems. Recycling waste tires is the best way to solve the problems. The landfill space and the natural resources could by reserved by utilizing waste tires. The waste tires were utilized as whole tires, processed tires (crumb rubber) and energy. The plants for manufacturing crumb rubber also were investigated for their equipments and scales.

  • In order to promote recycling of animal and plant residues, it is necessary to prepare detailed statistics on the sources, generation amount and the state of disposal so that waste recycling companies and enterprises can obtain the information easily. Also, the recycling methods specified in the law should be appropriate. For this, the study reviewed the appropriateness of detailed classification of animal and plant residues and permitted recycling methods in the Enforcement Regulations of the Waste Management Act of Korea. For improvement of the detailed classification, the study conducted literature review on European and Japanese ones. Additionally, we visited slaughterhouses of livestock and poultry, vegetable oils manufacturing companies, starches and glucose or maltose manufacturing companies, which generate the waste and recycle the waste, to grasp the status of recycling in Korea. Based on the results, the study proposes improvement measures for the detailed classification and the permitted recycling types in the law.

  • Nowadays, countries all over the world are deeply concerned about pollution in the global environment, so they are seeking various ways to adequately disposal of waste. Still, the environmental situation seems to be getting worse and worse. It is evident that such wastes and pollution have been endangering human life nestled in this globe up to the end of the 20th century. We should not, however, tolerate such human misconduct and mal-management of resources any more in the new millenium. For realizing a society that is sustainable for generations to come, it is important to establish a social system for minimizing wastes, promote re-use and recycling, and develop technology for improving recycling efficiencies, including product designs that facil-itate re-use and recycling and innovative technologies for processing wastes. In this paper, reviewing the current status of Korean waste problems, the governmental policy and specific approach for the establishment for recycling society is considered.

  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE or E-waste) is one of the fastest growing waste stream in Korea. The proper management of such equipment has become of major concern for solid waste professionals because of the large growth of the waste stream and the presence of a myriad of toxic materials in it. In this paper, in order to evaluate the economical value of the recycling metallic materials from the E-waste, big size electrical home appliances, small size electrical home appliances, end of life hand phone and PCB(printed circuit board) were reviewed.

  • Small household appliances such as electric rice cooker, a vacuum cleaner, an electric fan, etc. are diverse and complex due to the materials and components and waste streams from the manufacturing processes. In the present study, physical characterization of small e-wastes was analyzed on major items including electric rice cooker after manual dismantling. Small household appliances is an important potential source of waste plastic, however, recycling plastics from small e-waste is still unusual. The present communication gives results of separation processes on black plastics and the limitations of these sorting processes in used small household appliances.

  • Modern people live in the age of plastics. It has been widely used due to its easy molding processing, mass production, and excellent durability. However, over-produced plastics for convenience cause plastic disasters and adversely affect the ecosystem. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the use of single-use plastic waste due to the use of delivery services has increased. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a plastic pandemic. Currently, domestic recycling policies depend only on recycling collection companies and market prices of recyclable resources. This paper confirms whether the outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the price of plastic waste. It also shows that the price of plastic waste is more unstable than metals with a high recycling rate. This urges businesses to share the cost of recycling on plastic waste, no longer being dependent on market prices for recyclable resources.

  • Waste aluminum dross was processed to prepare alum with sulfuric acid, and poly aluminum chloride(PAC) with hydrochloric acid. Metallic aluminum remained in the waste dross was dissolved into the sulfuric acid solution, and the solution could be used as alum for water treatment chemicals after adjusting the required alumina concentration and pH of the solution. Also, it was dissolved into the hydrochloric acid solution and processed to make PAC solution. Compared with the conventional method for preparation of alum and PAC using aluminum hydroxide, material cost could be saved in this method. Also, there is an additional merit in view of recycling of the waste aluminum dross by reducing the amount of waste disposed to landfill.

  • The patents were searched to investigate the trend of recycling technologies about plastic waste. Database was collected from WIPS site and the range of the search was limited to patents opened in U.S.A (US), European Union (EU), Japan (JP) and Korea (KR) to september 2009. In this paper, 4,795 patents were selected by investigation abstracts and the trend of the recycling technologies relating to waste plastic were investigated through the analyzing by the years, countries, companies. The patents were occupied 65% by Japan and the most of the patents were about chemical recycling. In the case of Korea, material recycling was major in the patents of waste plastic recycling.
