  • Little information is available for emission pathway even if HFC-134a that is known as one of the major greenhouse gases has been broadly used in Korea. This paper attempts to clarify the emission characteristics of HFC-134a used for refrigerant of cold drinking vending machines (CDVMs) at the use- and disposal-phase. We measured the residual amounts in the scrap CDVMs of 47 by applying commercial recover for refrigerant. The first-order kinetic model was introduced and the emission rate would be proportional to the remaining quantity of refrigerant. The emission factor at the use-phase was determined indirectly to be $6.9{\pm}0.7$ %/yr within a confidence interval of 95%, using information on residual amount and elapsed operation time at the disposal point. Correspondingly, the annual emission rate of HFC-134a per CDVM was determined to be 11.6 g. The average residual rate of HFC-134a in scrap CDVMs was assessed to be $62.5{\pm}2.2%$, leading to a potential emission amount of 144.8 g per scrap CDVM. The chemical compositions of refrigerants from scrap passenger vehicles are quite similar to those of new refrigerants, suggesting that the refrigerants from scrap passenger vehicles could be reused. During the recovering process of refrigerant, the recovered refrigerant was contaminated by compressor lubricant that accounted for about 30% in weight. It is necessary to separate the refrigerant from the recovered material contaminated by lubricant for recycling and reuse the refrigerant.

  • Many harbor structures have been constructed, and some structures are now under construction in Korea, which is a peninsular state and a logistics hub in Northeast Asia. Expansions and extensions of existing harbors are also being planned to meet increasing natural disaster threats. Wave-dissipation concrete blocks are recycled or discarded based on the personal experience of engineers only, and there are no safety checks or criteria. To check the safety of used blocks, material evaluations were done by visual inspection of blocks on the ground and under water and from 20 non-destructive measurements of the rebound hardness test and 3 concrete core samples. Wave-dissipation blocks are sometimes fully or partially damaged in the process of transferring and mounting them or during construction. Therefore, a safety check is essential for recycling blocks with an evaluation of materials while considering the construction phases. To do this, a block was modeled with a 3D finite element method using ADINA, and impact analyses were done according to the transfer, mounting, and construction phases. From the results of the impact analyses and material evaluation, the safety checks and reasonable evaluation of used blocks were examined, and detailed construction methods are proposed. The methods are expected to maximize the reuse of used wave-dissipation blocks from an economical point of view.

  • For the management of mercury-containing products, the products were selected to do material flow analysis in preference of not having selected in previous studies. Domestically mercury have been added to pigment for prevention of bacterial growth. So, in this study paint containing pigment was selected as a target. 71 samples of paint products collected in 2014 and data of 38 samples of wastes (dust, sludge, paint) analyzed in 2010 were used in material flow analysis. The result shows that mercury was 0~0.25 mg/kg in products and 0.23~0.69 mg/kg in the wastes. In the material flow analysis, the amount of flow in the process of distribution was 10.06 kg/year, but the amount of flow in disposal like a landfill, incineration and recycling was much than distribution as 25.27 kg/year. It was caused by different sampling period between collecting products and data of wastes. Therefore, It could be possible to be affected from regulation by RoHS like decreasing usage of mercury in paint products or eradicated in the industry. Mercury contents in current paint products are very low to affect discharging to the environment.

  • Many anticancer agents as well as ionizing radiation have been shown to induce autophagy which is originally described as a protein recycling process and recently reported to play a crucial role in various disorders. In HCT116 human colon cancer cells, we found that curcumin, a polyphenolic phytochemical extracted from the plant Curcuma longa, markedly induced the conversion of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3)-I to LC3-II and degradation of sequestome-1 (SQSTM1) which is a marker of autophagosome degradation. Moreover, we found that curcumin caused GFP-LC3 formation puncta, a marker of autophagosome, and decrease of GFP-LC3 and SQSTM1 protein level in GFP-LC3 expressing HCT116 cells. It was further confirmed that treatment of cells with hydrogen peroxide induced increase of LC3 conversion and decrease of GFP-LC3 and SQSTM1 levels, but these changes by curcumin were almost completely blocked in the presence of antioxidant, N-acetylcystein (NAC), indicating that curcumin leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which results in autophagosome development and autolysosomal degradation. In parallel with NAC, SQSTM1 degradation was also diminished by bafilomycin A, a potent inhibitor of autophagosome-lysosome fusion, and cell viability assay was further confirmed that cucurmin-induced cell death was partially blocked by bafilomycin A as well as NAC. We also observed that NAC abolished curcumin-induced activation of extracelluar signal-regulated kinases (ERK) 112 and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), but not Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). However, the activation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK seemed to have no effect on the curcumin-induced autophagy, since both the conversion of LC3 protein and SQSTM1 degradation by curcumin was not changed in the presence of NAC. Taken together, our data suggest that curcumin induced ROS production, which resulted in autophagic activation and concomitant cell death in HCT116 human colon cancer cell. However, ROS-dependent activation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK, but not JNK, might not be involved in the curcumin-induced autophagy.

  • This research was carried out to investigate chemical pretreatment using limestone in treating abandoned metallic mine drainage with anaerobic biological treatment, and to estimate application of papermill and livestock sludge as carbon sources for SRB (Sulfate Reducing Bacterial. Capacity of anaerobic limestone bed was steeply decreased. But if limestone was utilized as pretreatment process in treating them with anaerobic biological treatment. it could look forward to stabilize system because it did initally neutralize them. Effluent SCOD in R-4 was lower than R-l~R-3 in inital HRT 5day but its concentration was high in HRT 1day after passed time. Therefore in point of durability and supply of organic matter. it seemed that R-4 was useful became organic matter in R-4 was not consumed by excessive degradation within short period. In all reactors, pH was suitable for SRB growth in whole HRT, but on the evidence of ORP, SRB was active after HRT 2day. Fixation trend of heavy meta s showed high as $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction efficiency increased, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ reduction and fixation of heavy metals were relatively high in HET 2day.

  • There are numerous studies on transepithelial transports in duct cells including $Cl^-$ and/or $HCO_3^-$. However, studies on transepithelial $K^+$ transport of normal duct cells in exocrine glands are scarce. In the present study, we examined the characteristics of $K^+$ currents in single duct cells isolated from guinea pig pancreas, using a whole-cell patch clamp technique. Both $Cl^-$ and $K^+$ conductance were found with KCI rich pipette solutions. When the bath solution was changed to low $Cl^-$, reversal potentials shifted to the negative side, $-75{\pm}4\;mV$, suggesting that this current is dominantly selective to $K^+$. We then characterized this outward rectifying $K^+$ current and examined its $Ca^{2+}$ dependency. The $K^+$ currents were activated by intracellular $Ca^{2+}$. 100 nM or 500 nM $Ca^{2+}$ in pipette significantly (P<0.05) increased outward currents (currents were normalized, $76.8{\pm}7.9\;pA$, n=4 or $107.9{\pm}35.5\;pA$, n=6) at +100 mV membrane potential, compared to those with 0 nM $Ca^{2+}$ in pipette $(27.8{\pm}3.7\;pA,\;n=6)$. We next examined whether this $K^+$ current, recorded with 100 nM $Ca^{2+}$ in pipette, was inhibited by various inhibitors, including $Ba^{2+}$, TEA and iberiotoxin. The currents were inhibited by $40.4{\pm}%$ (n=3), $87.0{\pm}%$ (n=5) and $82.5{\pm}%$ (n=9) by 1 mM $Ba^{2+}$, 5 mM TEA and 100 nM iberiotoxin, respectively. Particularly, an almost complete inhibition of the current by 100 nM iberiotoxin further confirmed that this current was activated by intracellular $Ca^{2+}$. The $K^+$ current may play a role in secretory process, slnce recycling of $K^+$ is critical for the initiation and sustaining of $CI^-$ or $HCO_3^-$ secretion in these cells.

  • Ulmus davidiana supercritical fluid residue EtOH extracts(USCFR) and ethyl acetate solvent fraction (USCFREA) of supercritical extraction foil were investigated in order to examine the recycling of supercritical extraction foil in the process of studying Ulmus davidiana branch supercritical extract. Experiments were performed for the determination of total phenol content. The $IC_{50}$ value(ppm) of DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity was $7.42{\pm}0.09$, $7.50{\pm}0.05$, $22.94{\pm}0.09$, $6.43{\pm}0.10$, and USCFREA, respectively, as compared with the positive control (vitamin C) with values $17.80{\pm}0.14$ and $5.34{\pm}0.06$, respectively. The antioxidative activities of USCFR and USCFREA were confirmed to be superior to the positive control group. In anti-allergic activity studies, both USCFR and USCFREA showed concentration-dependentanti-allergic activity, and USCFREA showed strong anti-allergic activity even at very low concentrations. Thetotal phenolic contents (ugEG, ugGA; ppm) of USCFR were $134.17{\pm}0.13$, $132.02{\pm}0.24$ and USCFREA were $154.77{\pm}1.05$ and $153.18{\pm}1.10$, respectively. Based on the above results and strong antioxidant activity, USCFR and USCFREA hold the potential to be considered as basic research materials for the development of therapeutic supplements based medicines or functional cosmetics related to chronic inflammatory skin immunity diseases.

  • Deconstruction of the building must be applied firstly in order to improve recycling and reuse of construction wastes. In this study have done a case study for deconstruction of an apartment. All construction waste(CW) which will be generated during deconstruction was examined in each part of the building. Because drawing did not exist in most of the old building, we drew up floor plans of buildings. After analyzing these drawings, estimated quantities of CW. It was measured working time of labor and equipments for deconstruction and general demolition on each building of the apartment. In addition, it was proposed in the volume and weight per unit after analyzing detailed measurement of CW which was generated in the process of deconstruction and traditional demolition. It suggested recovery rate at a site, volume and weight conversion factors, and waste basic unit per area that based on the results of comparative analysis on the amount of CW which is calculated from drawing and generated at a site. These factors will be used fundamental materials for estimating quantities and treatment cost of CW, and scheduling of works.

  • Purpose: Zirconia blocks for all ceramic dentures are divided into two groups. One is pre-heated block and the other is binder added block. In this study, the possibility of recycling the remained parts of binder added block after CAD/CAM machining with slip casting process was investigated. Methods: Owing to the binder added block contain large amount of organic matter, Binder burn-out was must be carried out before ball milling for preparing the casting slip. Binder burn-out was accomplished at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours. Ball milling was performed with 5mm zirconia ball and 60mm polyethylene bottle. From 0% to 5% at 1% intervals of alumina was added to zirconia powder for preparing slip. Solid casting was achieved with plaster mold. Cast bodies were dried and sintered at $1,500^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Linear shrinkage, apparent porosity, water absorption, bulk density, and flexural strength were tested. Microstructures were observed by SEM, EDS and XRD analysis were executed. Results: Optimum slips for casting was prepared with 300g ball, 100g powder, and 180g distilled water. Cast body without alumina showed 26% of linear shrinkage, 6.07 of apparent density, and 470MPa of three point bend strength. On the other hand, as received zirconia block, which was sintered at the same conditions, showed 23% of linear shrinkage, 6.10 of apparent density, and 680MPa of three point bend strength. When 3% of alumina was added to zirconia, sintered body showed 23% of linear shrinkage, 6.10 of apparent density, and 780MPa of three point bend strength. SEM photomicrographs and EDS analysis showed alumina particles uniformly dispersed in zirconia matrix, and XRD analysis showed no phase transformation of tetragonal zirconia particles was occurred when alumina was added. Conclusion: According to the all of this experimental results, 3% of alumina added cast zirconia body showed excellent mechanical properties more than as received binder containing zirconia block.

  • An ore of stone obtained from quarry lose its about 60% such as the muck and the stone-dust during the process of making the architectural block, the crushed aggregate and so on. A part of the muck is only reutilized for the crushed aggregate as road pavement materials, while the most of the muck in the shape of powder is mixed with water and then it is deposited in a sludge tank. The muck in the shape of powder is called the stone-dust. If the stone-dust is discharged and sprayed, an ecosystem will have terrible damage because the seepage of surface water, the flow of ground water and the movement of air are not occurred smoothly by packing the void of soils. As the Waste Management Law (2003) in Korea, the stone-dust is sorted out the industrial waste and the most of that is dumped in ground. Therefore, the establishments of an efficient recycling plan are necessary through the improvement of engineering properties of the stone-dust. To investigate the possibility of recycle and improvement for the stone-dust, the stone-dust and natural soils are sampled from six quarries in Korea. The various soil tests are performed by use of the mixed soils with the stone-dust content ratio. As the result of various soil tests, the recycle possibility of the stone-dust is analyzed as subbase layer materials of the roads.
