The oxidative stress level and antioxidant activities in two green algae (Ulva pertusa and Ulva linza), two brown algae (Agarum cribrosum and Dictyota dichotoma), and three red algae (Grateloupia lanceolata, Carpopeltis affinis, and Gracilaria verrucosa) collected from intertidal regions of Korea were assessed. In the two green algae, although the total glutathione content was not as high as that of the brown algae, the glutathione pool was extremely reduced, and the glutathione reductase (GRd)/glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity ratio was high, which apparently plays an important role for protection against oxidative damage, as manifested by low lipid peroxidation. In the brown algae, which exhibited a low lipid peroxidation level that was comparable to the green algal species, the highest glutathione content, together with high GPx activity, appears to be the most important factor in their antioxidant protection. The red algal species exhibited extremely high lipid peroxidation levels. They also contained the lowest and most oxidized glutathione among the species, as well as the lowest GRd activity. In spite of the marked difference in the glutathione content, the significant difference in the activity of ${\gamma}$-glutamylcysteine ligase, the rate limiting enzyme for glutathione synthesis, among the species was not exhibited. Our results suggest that there is a significant difference in the levels of oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity among the algal species, and that the glutathione system, especially the efficiency of glutathione recycling, plays a vital role in antioxidative protection in algal species.
Pakistan being the 6$^{th}$ largest sugar producer has over 75 sugar mills with annual production capacity of about 2.4 million tons during 1996-97. The contribution of Sindh with 27 sugar mills is recorded over 50% of the total sugar production. The majority of the mills in Pakistan use the Defecation-Remelt-Phosphitation (DRP; 24 mills), Defecation-Remelt-Carbonation (DRC; 21 mills) and Defecation-Remelt Carbonation and Sulphitation (DRCS; 11 mills) process. Seven of the 75 sugar mills in Pakistan also produce industrial alcohol from molasses, a by- product of sugar manufacturing process. These sugar industries also produce fly ash, which have been found to contain unburned carbon and reach as far as four-kilo meter area with the wind direction, threatening the community health of people living around, besides posing other aesthetic problems. The untreated wastewater, in many cases, finds its way to open surface drains causing serious threat to livestock, flora and fauna. One study showed that fly ash emitted from the chimneys contain particle size ranging from 38 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1000 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. About 50 per cent of each fly ash samples were above 300 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size and were mostly unburned Carbon particles, which produced 85% weight loss on burning in air atmosphere at 1000${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This fly ash (mostly carbon) was the main cause of many health and aesthetic problems in the sugar mill vicinity. The environmental challenge for the local sugar mills is associated with liquid waste gaseous emission and solid waste. This paper discusses various waste recycling technologies and practices in sugar industries of Pakistan. The application of EM technology and Biogas technology has proved very successful in reusing the sugar industry wastewater and mud, which otherwise were going waste.

Hurdle technique was used to remove cholesterol efficiently from liquid egg yolk. The quality of the low cholesterol egg products from the process were evaluated. From the 75 % cholesterol reduced egg yolk through $\beta$-cyclodextrin treatment. 2 times weight of soy bean oil was added to the egg yolk and homogenized followed by centrifuged to be maximized to remove cholesterol. When the pH of the yolk was adjusted to 9, 92 % of cholesterol was removed while 95.4 % of cholesterol was removed when 3 times weight of soy bean oil was added to the egg yolk. As the results of application of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction to the 75 % cholesterol reduced egg yolk through ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin treatment, 92.5 % of the cholesterol was removed from the egg yolk at $35^{\circ}C$, 4,500 psi, for 4 hours under co-solvent. The quality characteristics of the produced low cholesterol egg products were analysed. The cholesterol reduced egg yolk produced from ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin and soy bean oil treatment showed the lower emulsion capacity compared with control. The fatty acid composition of the cholesterol reduced egg yolk produced from ${\bet}a$-cyclodextrin and soy bean oil treatment showed increased C18:2 and C18:3 compared with control while decreased C16:1 and C18: 1 compared with control. The saponification method with extracting solvent of hexane showed that cholesterol concentration was 28.1 %. The quantity of hydrolysis solution(95 % ethanol : 33 % KOH = 94 : 6) was varied from 40 to 80 times of sample weights and the cholesterol concentration of 35.7 % was the highest result in the 60 times(v/w) hydrolysis solution. Cholesterol concentration of 35.7 % was recovered at the first trial with saponification method. but it could be improved up to 95.7 % after 4 times repetitive purification.

Clay soils are typical for their swelling properties upon absorption of water during rains and development of cracks during summer time owing to the profile desorption of water through the inter-connected soil pores by water vapour diffusion leading to evaporation. This type of unstable soil phenomenon by and large poses a serious threat to the strength and stability of structures when rest on such type of soils. Even as lime and cement are extensively used for stabilization of clay soils it has become imperative to find relatively cheaper alternative materials to bring out the desired properties within the clay soil domain. In the present era of catastrophic environmental degradation as a side effect to modernized manufacturing processes, industrialization and urbanization the creative idea would be treating the waste products in a beneficial way for reuse and recycling. Bottom ash and ecosand are construed as a waste product from cement industry. An optimal combination of bottom ash-eco sand can be thought of as a viable alternative to stabilize the clay soils by means of an effective dispersion dynamics associated with the inter connected network of pore spaces. A CATIA model was created and imported to ANSYS Fluent to study the dispersion dynamics. Ion migration from the bottom ash-ecosand pile was facilitated through natural formation of cracks in clay soil subjected to atmospheric conditions. Treated samples collected at different curing days from inner and outer zones at different depths were tested for, plasticity index, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), free swell index, water content, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), pH and ion concentration to show the effectiveness of the method in improving the clay soil.
Background: In recent years, there has been considerable research on recycling of agro-industrial waste for production of bioactive compounds. The food processing industry produces large amounts of citrus peels that may be an inexpensive source of useful agents. Objective: The present work aimed to explore the phytochemical content, antioxidant, anticancer, antiproliferation, and antigenotxic activities of lemon, grapefruit, and mandarin peels. Materials and Methods: Peels were extracted using 98% ethanol and the three crude extracts were assessed for their total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity using DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). Their cytotoxic and mitogenic proliferation activities were also studied in human leukemia HL-60 cells and mouse splenocytes by CCK-8 assay. In addition, genotoxic/antigenotoxic activity was explored in mouse splenocytes using chromosomal aberrations (CAs) assay. Results: Lemon peels had the highest of TPC followed by grapefruit and mandarin. In contrast, mandarin peels contained the highest of TFC followed by lemon and grapefruit peels. Among the extracts, lemon peel possessed the strongest antioxidant activity as indicated by the highest DPPH radical scavenging, the lowest effective concentration 50% ($EC_{50}=42.97{\mu}g\;extract/mL$), and the highest Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC=0.157). Mandarin peel exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity ($IC_{50}=77.8{\mu}g/mL$) against HL-60 cells, whereas grapefruit and lemon peels were ineffective anti-leukemia. Further, citrus peels possessed immunostimulation activity via augmentation of proliferation of mouse splenocytes (T-lymphocytes). Citrus extracts exerted non-cytotoxic, and antigenotoxic activities through remarkable reduction of CAs induced by cisplatin in mouse splenocytes for 24 h. Conclusions: The phytochemical constituents of the citrus peels may exert biological activities including anticancer, immunostimulation and antigenotoxic potential.
This study was carried out to investigate the sustainable agriculture of no-tillage technique to minimize tillage problems under rain interception green house condition including recycling of the ridge and the furrow for following cultivation in Korea. Chemical properties in soils were investigated at 3-years after cultivation at conventional tillage [CT; 2-years no-tillage (2009-2010) and 1-year (2011) tillage] and no-tillage [NT; 2009-2011] field. Soil pH maintained between 5.8 and 6.0 irrespectively tillage and no-tillage. Salinity (EC), contents of total nitrogen (TN), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and exchangeable cations (K, Ca and Mg) in soil were remarkably higher in CT than in NT treatment. Salinity (EC), contents of OM, TN, CEC, and exchangeable cations in top soil and subsoil indicated higher deviation in CT than NT treatment. Organic matters and inorganic matters in soil were positive (+) correlation. Suppression of pepper growth and increase of yield were observed in no-tillage soil compared with tillage soil. These results indicated that no-tillage technique in crop culture could play an important role with respect to chemical properties in silt loam soil.
A preliminary quantitative model of the trophic structure in Gwangyang bay, Korea was obtained using ECOPATH and data from relevant studies to date in the region. The model integrates and analyzes biomass, food spectrum, trophic interactions and the key trophic pathways of the system. The bay model comprises 9 groups of benthic primary producer, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, bivalve, pelagic fish, demersal fish and piscivorous fish. The total system throughput was estimated at $2.4\;kgWW/m^2/yr$, including a consumption of $41\%$, exports of $9\%$, respiratory flows of $24\%$ and flows into detritus of $26\%$. All of which originate from primary producers measured at $52\%$ and detritus of $48\%$. The total biomass was seen to be high compared to the levels of Somme, Delaware, Chesapeake Bays and Seine Estuary. This seems to be possibly due to artificial bivalve aquaculture and overestimation of benthos and benthic primary producer groups. The deviation can be calibrated by neglecting aquaculture and decreasing the habitat area for the groups. The trophic network of the bay shows a low level of recycling and organization as indicated by Finn's cycling index $3.3\%$, Ascendancy $3.1\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits, Capacity $5.1\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits and Redundancy $2.2\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits. A high relative ascendancy of $62\%$ and a low internal relative ascendancy of $18\%$ indicate the system is not fully organized and stable towards disturbances, depending upon external connections. Although the model should be continuously provided with field data and calibrated further in depth, this study is the first trophic model applied to the region. The model can be a useful tool to understand the ecosystem in a quantitative manner.

The polymer concrete is drawing a strong interest as high-performance materials in the construction industry. Resins using recycled PET offer the possibility of a lower source cost of materials for making useful polymer concrete products. Also the recycling of PET in polymer concrete would help solve some of the solid waste problems posed by plastics and save energy. Polymer concrete beams using unsaturated polyester resins based on recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste were used in our study for grasping its structural behavior of static and fatigue. As a result of static test, Compression stress distribution of Polymer concrete indicates linear behavior such as triangles. Although polymer concrete is high strength materials, its ductility capacity is excellent. From the fatigue test results, There was almost no difference on flexural characteristics between before and after fatigue loading. Therefore, recycled PET polymer concrete remains excellent structural ability after fatigue loading.

In this study, a small portable sorting pilot for separation that can be used in dismantling construction site, which is the stage of construction waste generation, was developed, and its separation efficiency was evaluated to increase the actual recycling rate of the construction waste. The pilot was developed as portable sorting pilot for separation of 6 ton capacity that can handle one arm roll box within a $15m^2$ area in consideration of narrow places in the downtown area where a number of dismantling sites are located and various processes performed in the dismantling sites. In order to evaluate the efficiency performance of the developed device, the separation and sorting were carried out ten times with respect to trommel rotational speed RPM 2-3, 4-6 and 7-8. According to the results, the highest efficiency of about 90% was shown at RPM 6-7.
The domestic, quantity of copper slag as a by-product at copper smelting process reaches 700,000 tons annually while its application is limited. Therefore, the secure disposal plan of copper slag is urgently required. For this reason, in this study, copper slag was used as a substitute for sand in Sand Compaction Pile that is one of the improvement methods of soft ground because the particle size distribution of copper slag ranges from 0.15mm to 5m(coarse state) and it maintains stable glassy state environmentally. The geotechnical characteristics of copper slag were evaluated through laboratory model tests and the field application of copper slag was compared with generally used sand by pilot tests. From these experimental results, copper slag's material characteristics, bearing capacity, settlement reduction and improvement effects of surrounding ground were found to be superior to generally used sand. The copper slag can be used as a substitute far sand in the Sand Compaction Pile method and as recycling material of industrial by-product with high econonical and environmental value when natural resources are being exhausted.
