  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Actinomyces sp. and Bacillus sp., United States granular microorganisms and Japan granular microorganisms on turfgrass growth and thatch decomposing of creeping bentgrass in golf course by measuring turf color index, chlorophyll index, thatch content of soil, root length, turf density and chemical properties and thatch content of soil. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; control(CF; compound fertilizer), microorganism medium(M; CF+M), microorganism medium and livestock manure fertilizer(M-L; CF+M+LMF), microorganism medium, livestock manure fertilizer and amino acid liquid fertilizer(M-L-A; MM+LMF+ALF), United States granular microorganisms(USGM; CF+USGM), Japan granular microorganisms(CF+JGM). Soil properties investigated after experiment was scarcely affected by applied fertilizers in root zone of creeping bentgrass. The turf color index and chlorophyll index of M, M-L, M-L-A, USGM, JGM treatment were higher than those of CF. The turfgrass root in M-L treatment was longer than others. The thatch content of soil in M treatment was longer than others. The thatch content of M was decreased than that of CF by 6.8%. These was suggested that application of M induced the development of quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by assisting turfgrass growth and thatch decomposing.

  • In this study, biological treatment process of MWWT(Municipal wet-waste Treatment) has been developed through a moduling of the containerized closed ATAD(Auto thermal aerobic digestion) system & closed vertical dynamic acerator, which were used for food waste and cattle manure, respectively. Though biological process has several advantages such as low concentrations of heavy metals and salts, proper and stable C/N ratio and constant reaction rate against the process treating two wastes separately, it has a obstacles of salt concentration and much usage of bulking agent such as wood chip. After rapid oxidation in the boxed tower reactor for 5 days, the content of sewage sludge would be reduced 65% on around, might be mixed with the food waste that had been treated in the static closed reactor during 6 days and put in the secondary static reactor for curing. During composting process, the odor contained in the gas generated from the reactor was removed by passing it through a biofilter as well as the leachate was treated in the wastewater treatment facility. Consequently, it seemed to be possible to compost sewage sludge at mild and stable operating condition and at low cost through the biological ATAD process resulting in the production of organic compost satisfying the specifications regulated by itself.

  • This study was performed to evaluate efficiency of soil microbial inoculator for active composting of food waste. In addition the number of microorganisms in roil microbial inoculator and the effect of seeding in the process of composting were investigated. food waste samples collected from a refectory were analyzed for physical-chemical properties. The samples were adjusted to moisture content of 65% by saw dust and seeded with soil microbial inoculator of 10% by the weight in case of reactor B. The number of microorganisms, aerobic bacteria, actinomyces, yeast, and fungi in soil microbial inoculator were over $2.98{\times}10^9/g$, $3.93{\times}10^7/g$, $1.21{\times} 10^5/g$, and $5.79{\times}10^7/g$, respectively. During the process of composting, the highest temperatures were $63.4^{\circ}C$ at reactor A(unseeded control)after 10 days and $66.8^{\circ}C$ at reactor B(seeded compost) after 4 days. The pH values of reactor A and B rapidly increased after 3 days and after first few days during composting period, respectively. The highest $CO_2$ concentrations were 6.1%(after 10 days) and 10.8%(afer 4 days) in reactor A and B, respectively. The degradation rates of organic matter(rd) between reactor A and B increased by 17.1% and 64.5%, respectively Consequently, the effects of Inoculation on comporting parameter such as temperature increasing, pH change, chemical properties, and the degradation rates of organic matter(rd) were higher in seeded compost than in unseeded control.

  • Spent catalysts containing platinum were generated in petroleum refinery and other chemical industries. The reclamation of platinum metals from such wastes has long been attempted in view of their rare, expensive and indispensable nature. In this study, the recovery of platinum from petroleum catalysts was attempted by a method consisting mainly of dissolving alumina carrier with sulfuric acid thereby concentrating insoluble platinum. Also, platinum dissolved partially in sulfuric acid was recovered by a cementation method using aluminum metal as a reductive agent. The effect of temperature, time, concentration of sulfuric acid, and pulp density on the dissolution of carrier was investigated. When the carrier of platinum catalyst was $\Upsilon-Al_2$O$_3$ about 95% alumina was dissolved in 6.0 M sulfuric acid at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. When the carrier was the mixture of $\Upsilon-Al_2$$O_3$ and $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ about 92% was dissolved after 4 hours. As a result, more than 99% of platinum could be recovered by this method and aluminum sulfate was also obtained as byproduct.

  • To investigate the availability of solidified wastes as resource, wastewater sludge, waste gypsum and fly ash were mixed and the results with various mixing ratios are as follows. Compressive strength turned out to be increasing as the amount of waste gypsum increases, keeps longer curing inhibition, and higher forming Pressure under the conditions of waste gypsum/sludge ratio 0.31-0.45, and 0.9kg cement as 15% and 1.2kg cement as 20% of total amount. Solidified agent under the fly ash/sludge ratio 0.45, 0.6, compressive strength seemed to be higher than standard one which means solidified wastes with these conditions could be applicable in real life. These results inform that concentrations of the leachate $Cr^{+6}$, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb solidified matrix, containing low concentration of heavy metal, were cured with/without enough time it still will cause adverse effect on nature environment and application of heavy metal sequester must be needed to reuse industrial wastes from incineration plant solidified matrix. Total cost price, when considering manufacturing capability of the facilities for resourcerizing as 18,000ton was presented 678,664,000 won, as it were, manufacturing cost price was 37,704 won per ton. The results as above has shown that it's possible to use the mixture of waste gypsum/sludge, fly ash/sludge, cement, additions, and solidification matter as substitute of materials like brick, block, interlocking which has proper compressive strength of KS L 5201 and KS F 4004.

  • Moisture is one of the important design factors that affects to the changes of physical properties and air permeability in the composting matrix. This study examines the effects of moisture during the wetting and drying procedure on physical properties like bulk density, particle size, free air space and air permeability in the sawdust used as the bulking agent in composting process. During both procedures of wetting and drying of the water, with increasing moisture content, bulk density and particle size increased, but FAS decreased. In the range of near 40 to 60% moisture content on a wet basis, particle size and FAS in wetting procedure were larger and higher than those in drying procedure. During wetting procedure, pressure drop continuously decreased ranging from near 20 to 60% moisture content, despite of decreasing FAS as a consequence of increasing moisture, and then over the range of 60% moisture content, pressure drop rapidly increased to the saturated moisture condition while the pore space was filled with the water. On the other hand, during drying procedure, pressure drop decreased from the saturated condition to 40% moisture content. In the recommended range of 50 to 60% moisture content for composting operation, pressure drop in wetting procedure were lower than in drying procedure. For the enhancement of the air permeability in the composting matrix, the wetting procedure was proper than the drying procedure, and the optimum moisture content for the efficient composting operation was appeared to be near 60%.

  • Spherical atomizing reduction steel slag was prepared by atomizing technology using reduction steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) generated from steel industry. In order to develop the mass-recycling technology of atomizing reduction steel slag, polymer concrete composite was prepared using spherical atomizing reduction steel slag instead of fine aggregate (river sand) and coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. Different polymer concrete specimens were prepared with the various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag in order to investigate the characteristics of polymer concrete composite. Results showed that compressive strengths of polymer concrete specimens decreased with the increase of replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag, but flexural strengths of the specimens showed a maximum strength at the 50% of replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag. It was concluded that addition ratio of polymer binder, which affect greatly on the prime cost of production of polymer concrete, could be reduced by maximum 18.2 vol% because the workability of the polymer concrete was remarkably improved by using the atomizing reduction steel slag. However, further study is required because the mechanical strength of the specimen using atomizing reduction steel slag was greatly reduced in hot water resistance test.

  • The extraction of platinum group metals such as Pt, Pd and Rh from spent automobile catalyst has been investigated by leaching in HCl solutions using $HNO_3$ or NaOCl as a oxidant. The effect of type and amount of oxidant, reaction time and pulp density on the extraction of platinum group metals was examined. Platinum group metals were recovered by the cementation method using aluminum as a reducing agent. The extraction ratio was higher when NaOCl was used as a oxidant. The optimum leaching conditions were obtained to be: HCl 8 M, the amount of NaOCl 1.4 mole, leaching temperature $90^{\circ}C$, leaching time 180 minutes, pulp density 400g/L. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction of Pt, Pd and Rh were 96.1%, 93.6% and 77.3%, respectively. With the addition of 2.0g of aluminum which corresponds to 28 equivalent the reduction were 98% for Pt. 98.8% for Pd and 65.3% for Rh, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficiency of stcclmaldng slag and sludge in removing metals existing in wastewater or leachate. Laboratory experiments were performed as a function of initial concentration of metals. pH a and temperature of the background solution and the presence of che1ating agent, EDTA. The test conditions were temperatures r ranging from $25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$; initial concentrations varying from 5mg/L to 50 mg/L; pH between 3 and 11; and Cu. Cd‘ and Pb a as adsorbates. The results of tests showed that overall rates of metals removal were 20~30% at pH 3 and greater than 90% at p pH 7 and 11. Metals were removed from the solution predominantly via adsorption in acidic conditions, and the combined e effects of adsorption and precipitation in neutral and alkaline conditions. In view of the test results and other engineering c characteristics of steelmaking slag and sludg$\xi$, these industrial by-products from steel industry have a high potential to be used l in wastewater treatment and are particularly beneficial when used as landfill liner additives due to thelJ ability to remove heavy m metals from leachate.

  • Basic studies have been conducted regarding the attempt of the utilization of waste Undaria pinnatifida as an adsorbent for the adsorption treatment of lead-containing wastewater. Undaria pinnatifida was found to be chiefly composed of hyo-carbonaceous compounds and have a fairly high specific surface area, which suggesting the possibility of its application as a Potential adsorbent. The electrokinetic Potential of Undaria pinnatifida particles was observed to be negatively highest at around pH 8 and the fact that its electrokinetic potentials are negative at the whole pH range supported it might be an efficient adsorbent especially for cationic adsorbates. Under the experimental conditions, $Pb^{2+}$ was found to mostly adsorb onto Undaria pinnatifida within a few minutes and reach the equilibrium in adsorption within ca. 30 minutes. The adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$ was exothermic and explained well by e Freundlich model. Acidic pretreatment of Undaria pinnatifida enhanced its adsorption capacity for $Pb^{2+}$ , however, the reverse was observed for alkaline pretreatment. The formation of organometallic complex between $Pb^{2+}$ and some functional groups on the surface of Undaria pinnatifida was considered to be one of the main drives for adsorption. Finally the adsorbability of$ Pb^{2+}$ was examined to be rather affected by several solution features such as the coexistence of other adsorbate, the variation of ionic strength, and the concentration of complexing agent.
