  • This study aims to develop the model of evaluation on greenspace to increase the sustain ability of the planning and management for site-scale development projects. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The comprehensive principles of sustainable development projects were established, which include coexistence of man and nature, reflection of ecological principles, minimization of environmental pollution and damage, recycling and reuse of materials. (2) According to established principles, the evaluation criteria were classified into seven categories as follows: retention of ample greenspace, formation of greenspace as a habitat, species diversity of vegetation, consideration of indigenous plants, construction of green network, conservation of greenspace, and reuse of plant materials. (3) As a result of the analysis of questionnaire of experts, evaluation model was worked out with which we can evaluate environmental friendliness greenspace. And, the final evaluation indicators for greenspace are the rate of greeneries volume, securing habitat, indigenous plants, reuse of plant materials, and species diversity of vegetation, and the indicator of greenspace conservation.

  • This study purports to investigate the status quo of the environmentally-friendly green healthcare in teaching hospitals through the questionnaire survey. Data were collected from a total of 46 hospitals. The survey results revealed that most teaching hospitals did not meet the global standard of environmentally-friendly green hospitals. Especially, such items as alternative energy system, water recycling, CO2 emission reduction, green building construction, installation of pond or spring were found to be significantly below global standard. Based upon the study results, various strategies for establishing green hospitals were discussed. For example, energy saving design, such as solar heating, natural wind cooling, automatic temperature controller, green material use, wall surrounded by ivy, were recommended. In conclusion, the strategy and evaluation tool developed in the study will provide a good guide for establishing environmentally-friendly green hospitals.

  • Recently, new concept and paradigm of 'Environmental Sustainability' is taking a growing interest in environmental planning and design. This study is to establish the environmental sustainability principles, based on the concept of ESSD, and to develop the evaluation model of environmental sustainability for korean rural housing estates. A sustainability indices system, which is composed of 5 principles, 16 categories, an 37 estimation items, was finally established. Five principles of environmental sustainability for rural housing estate were. 'Sustainable Land Use', 'Interdependence of Men and Nature', 'Ecological Principles and Diversity', 'Efficient use of Energy and Recycling', and ' Minimizing Environmental Pollution'. And weighting values of each indicators, such as estimation items, categories, and principles, were estimated, based on the result of AHP etc. The questinnaire survey was conducted for experts of four related major fields. Finally, the validity and reliability of the sustainability indices system were verified.

  • An Ecocomplex is proposed for ecological design of the estuarine environment of Han River, which is designed upon an alternative mamagement concept of estuarine environment. The concept reveals interrelationships among estuary, delta region and urban inland with inputs/outputs and feedbacks among them. The Ecocomplex emphasizes an integration of wastewater treatment with aquaculture, agriculture and recreation, and carries out ecological treatment, recycling, and harvest processes. A module of wastewater treatment pond system is employed in the Ecocomplex, which treats a flow of 3,786 ㎥/day and is composed of a four-facultative-pond series. Treatment ponds stabilize wastewater discharged from the urban area, and concurrently produce algae for commercial or recreational fish farming. Effluent from treatment and fish ponds is reused for agricultural production. Through the waste-algae-fish-vegetable-recreation processes, wastewater from the urban settlement is recycled back to the urban ecosystem. This resource-conserving design approach can maintain a sustainable urban ecosystem, managing an estuarine environment more naturally, healthly, and economically.

  • The objectives of this study are to develop a stormwater management system that would contribute to improving water circulation, recycling storm water and promoting biodiversity in urban areas, to apply the system in an actual site, and to verify its effectiveness in order to generate a stormwater management system applicable in Korea. This study reviewed former researches and case studies, categorized stormwater management system into pre-treatment, retention and infiltration phases, and analyzed the strength and weakness of the techniques by synthesizing unit techniques of each stage. As a result, the process of the stormwater management system includes the following phases: 1) a rubble filtration layer; 2) a retention pond; 3) a infiltration pond; and 4) a stormwater retention pool (recirculation and recycling). Then, an empirical study to design and create the generated system according to the features of a site and to verify its effectiveness was conducted. The future study direction is to verify the effectiveness of the developed stormwater retention and infiltration ponds. To this end, it is planned to perform hydrological monitoring using automatic measuring equipment and monitoring on habitat bases and the biota living on the base. Based on its outcome, the applied model would be refined and improved to develop an alternative stormwater management system that would allow to achieve the improvement of urban water circulation, increase of biodiversity and efficient use of water resources.

  • The present study was carried out to find a suitable drying method for measuring non-evaporable water contents of various hydraulic inorganic materials. In Part 1 of the paper, the case Ordinary Portland cement is discussed. Various drying methods including vacuum and oven drying, and an ignition, were used for the OPC paste and mortar having different w/c. The sole vacuum drying under room temperature led a fluctuation on measurement of hydration degree, while the sole oven drying also yielded unwanted hydration promotion at the early age. A combination of the vacuum and oven drying was considered as a suitable drying method for the OPC case.

  • Effects of crushed coal bottom ash (CBA) with maximum size of 1 mm on the properties of mortar with various water-to-binder ratios (w/b) were evaluated. The present work is a fundamental study to establish a method of mix proportion design for mortar and concrete with CBA. The workability, air contents, and compressive strength of mortar were measured. Efficiency of CBA on the compressive strength at 28 days, which was adopted for mix proportion design, was evaluated based on concepts of 'equivalent strength' in CEN/TR 16637. It was found that the CBA could be contributed as a binder in mortar in some cases, while in other cases act as at aggregates. The efficiency of CBA was influenced by types of CBA and their replacement ratio, and w/b of mortar.

  • A series of experiment was conducted to evaluate basic performances of low-pH, anti-washing grouts incorporating gypsum which applied for reinforcing underwater cavities in limestone- grounds. Various types of mix proportions were designed and the fluidity, strength and environmental impact of these mixtures were evaluated. The flowability was evaluated under two conditions, i.e., flows without and with pressing, respectively. Strength was measured for the hardened mixtures fabricated under conditions of air and water injections. The environmental impacts including the pH of the suspension and the suspended solids concentration for the mixtures were evaluated. The low pH of fresh mixture suspension, below than 10, was achieved by incorporation of gypsum. The mix proportions of cement-quartz powder-gypsum binders and chemical agents resulted in mortar natural flow 7-10 cm and uniaxial compressive strength 4 MPa were derived.
