This paper presents an experimental work for short circular steel tube columns filled with normal concrete (NAC), recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), and RAC with silica fume and steel fiber. Ten specimens were tested under axial compression to research the effect of silica fume and steel fiber volume percentage on the behavior of recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube columns (RACFST). The failure modes, ultimate loads and axial load- strain relationships are presented. The test results indicate that silica fume and steel fiber would not change the failure mode of the RACFST column, but can increase the mechanical performances of the RACFST column because of the filling effect and pozzolanic action of silica fume and the confinement effect of steel fiber. The ultimate load, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of RACFST columns can exceed that of corresponding natural aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (NACFST) column. Design formulas EC4 for the load capacity NACFST and RACFST columns are proposed, and the predictions agree well with the experimental results from this study.
In this paper, a feasible strategy for the recycling of nuclear graphite is reported, based on the formation mechanism and the removal of carbon-14 by micro-oxidation. We investigated whether ground micro-oxidation graphite could be used as a filler to make new recycled graphite and which graphite/pitch coke ratio will give the recycled graphite outstanding properties (e.g., apparent density, flexural strength, compressive strength, and tensile strength). According to the existing properties of nuclear graphite, the ratio of graphite to pitch coke should not exceed 3. The recycled reactor graphite has been proven superior in density, strength, and thermal conductivity. The micro-oxidation process enhances the strength of the recycled graphite because there are more pores and unsmooth surfaces on the oxidized graphite particles, which is beneficial for the access of the pitch binder and leads to efficient joint adhesion among the graphite particles.
The fine powder obtained from the manufacturing process of recycled coarse aggregate contains unhydareted cement particles on their surface. It is believed that the alkalinity of the powder (11.0-12.5) is enough to active the slag-based composites. In this paper, the obtained powder was sieved and divided into two sizes, i.e., 0.08 mm and 0.3 mm, and added to the slag-based mortar. Results showed that the fine powder had an effect on the slump and the compressive strength of slag-based composites. With the different pH values of the powder, it could be seen that the distance between the two level powders. And found the peak 28 days compressive strength as the replacement ratio of the recycled aggregate powder changed. The findings from this study provide an indication that with achieved compressive strength, the fine powder can be used in a light weight concrete.
In this paper the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under cyclic loading was analyzed. The specimens, manufactured in a reduced-scale were made of (a) recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) by replacing 30% of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and (b) RAC incorporating Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber i.e., PET fiber-reinforced concrete (PFRC) at the joint region. PET fiber (aspect ratio=25) of 0.5% by weight of concrete used in the PFRC mix was obtained by hand cutting of post-consumer PET bottles. A reference specimen was also prepared using 100% of NCA and subjected to similar loading sequence. Comparing the results the structural behavior under cyclic loading of RAC specimens are quite similar to the reference specimens. Damage tolerance, load resisting capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation of the RAC specimens enhanced due to addition of PET fibers at the joint region. PFRC specimens also presented a lower damage indices and higher principal tensile stresses as compared to the RAC specimens. The results obtained gave experimental evidence on the feasibility of RAC for structural use. Using PET fibers as a discrete reinforcement is recommended for improving the seismic performance of RAC specimens.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the axial bearing capacity and residual properties of steel reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (SRC) column after elevated temperature. A total of 48 SRC columns were designed for the static loading test after elevated temperature. The variables include replacement ratios, designed temperature, target duration, thicknesses of cover concrete, steel ratios and stirrup spacing. From this test, the mass loss ratio and stress load-deformation curve were obtained, and the influence of various parameters on residual bearing capacity were analyzed. ABAQUS was used to calculate the temperature field of specimens, and then got temperature damage distribution on the cross-section concrete. It was shown that increasing of the elevated temperatures leaded to the change of concrete color from smoky-gray to grayish brown and results in reducing the bearing capacity of SRC columns. The axial damage and mechanism of SRC columns were similar to those of reinforced natural aggregate concrete columns at the same temperatures. Finally, the calculation method of axial compressive residual bearing capacity of SRC columns recycled concrete columns after high temperature was reported based on the test results and finite element analysis.
The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a substitute for natural aggregates in new concrete produces both economic and environmental advantages. Most of the RCA applications for pavements have been primarily applied to support layers for roads and airfields. This paper summarizes a work completed at the University of Illinois in partnership with the O'Hare Modernization Program to examine the effect of coarse and fine RCA on the concrete's fresh and hardened properties for airfield rigid pavement applications. Ten different RCA concrete mixtures were prepared with the incorporation of different percentages of RCA fines as well as replacement of cement with high volume percentages of supplementary cementitious materials such as Class C fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag to improve the workability and long-term properties of RCA concrete. All the mixes on this stage included 100% recycled coarse aggregates and the Two-Stage Mixing Approach was used as a mixing procedure. Based on the results obtained in the research, mixes with high percentages of recycled fine and coarse aggregates could be used for construction of airfield concrete pavements in conjunction with supplementary cementitious materials
Due to depleting reserves and environmental pressures, the availability of "good" aggregates, , particularly in many urban areas, has decreased in recent years and from the viewpoint of energy and resources saving, it may be very advantageous to use waste concrete as construction materials. Therefore, this paper, an experimental study on the application in the construction of recycled aggregate concrete, is the experimental program and properties of fresh concrete to investigate general performance and workability of concretef concrete
This paper deals with a reduction in the setting shrikage of polymer concrete using bentonite as shrinkage reducing agent. This study with polymer concrete using unsaturated polyester(UP) based on recycled PET waste was performed to verify the effect of various shrinkage reducing agent contents and the types of filler which are fly ash and $CaCo_3$. Setting stress induced by setting shrinkage was investigated in temrs of mechanical and chemical combination.
In this paper, the characteristics of soil concrete were examined using industrial waste red mud and construction waste circulating aggregate, and if unit cement of 250 kg/m3, it can be used as a soil packaging material by meeting the compressive strength standards for parking lots of SPS-KSCICO-001-2006:2020.
