  • Recently, many researches on bottom ash which is produced in the burning process of power plant are actively performed for its utilization for soil-subbase materials. In this paper, bottom ashes from 5 different power plants are prepared and several tests including compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression are carried out for mixed bottom ash and weathered soil considering 3 replacement ratio of 30%, 50%, and 70%. Through the tests, CBR result over 20 are evaluated without plastic property, which shows availability of subbase material. With higher increase in replacement ratio of bottom ash, CBR of mixed soil increases due to the higher mechanical performance of bottom ash. However, replacement effects of bottom ash on friction angle and cohesion are evaluated to be little since bottom ash plays a little role in rearrangement of mixed soil. Bottom ash with a good mechanical property is evaluated to have reasonable bearing capacity which shows a good property for subbase materials.

  • This paper was evaluated the rheology properties according to each step of paste, mortar and HPFRCC as a part of the basic study to development of sprayed high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC) for protection and blast resistant. Rheology test results in step of paste, in case of GGBFs and FA, it showed that the plastic viscosity and yield stress reduced gradually according to the increase of mixing rate, and in case of SF, the plastic viscosity and yield stress increased radically starting from the mixing rate of 10%. Rheology test results in step of mortar, type of aggregates, it showed that particle shape and grading of aggregate is influence on plastic viscosity and yield stress, and change of volume ratio is influence on plastic viscosity than yield stress. Fluidity and rheology test results in step of HPFRCC, if after a fiber mixed, it showed that viscosity agent is more effective to improve the fluidity and fiber dispersion than superplasticizer.

  • In this study, cutting robot system which could cut lateral protrusion into main pipes at the connection of sewer pipes was developed. In addition, the cutting test of the robot for the lateral protrusions were performed. The test parameters included materials used in the main pipes and diameters of the pipes, and materials used in the protruded pipes. The materials type of the main pipes were concrete and PE, and the diameters of the pipes were 300 and 500 mm. The materials type used in the protruded pipes were PE and PVC, and the diameter of the pipes was 100 mm. Remaining length of each lateral protruded pipe was less than 5 mm which was an target value of cutting performance. It showd that test results were within the target value. Therefore, in the repair of sewer pipes, the lateral protruded pipes can be cut by using the robot system developed in this paper.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation aimed at developing reinforced concrete beams consisting of precast permanent U-shaped reinforced mortar forms filled with different types of core materials to be used as a viable alternative to the conventional reinforced concrete beam. To accomplish this objective, an experimental program was conducted and theoretical model was adopted. The experimental program comprised casting and testing of thirty beams of total dimensions $300{\times}150{\times}2,000mm$ consisting of permanent precast U-shaped reinforced mortar forms of thickness 25 mm filled with the core material. Three additional typical reinforced concrete beams of the same total dimensions were also cast to serve as control specimens. Two types of single-layer and double-layers steel meshes were used to reinforce the permanent U-shaped forms; namely welded wire mesh and X8 expanded steel mesh. Three types of core materials were investigated: conventional concrete, autoclaved aerated lightweight concrete brick, and recycled concrete. Two types of shear connections between the precast permanent reinforced mortar form and the core material were investigated namely; adhesive bonding layer between the two surfaces, and mechanical shear connectors. The test specimens were tested as simple beams under three-point loadings on a span of 1,800 mm. The behavior of the beams incorporating the permanent forms was compared to that of the control beams. The experimental results showed that better crack resistance, high serviceability and ultimate loads, and good energy absorption could be achieved by using the proposed beams which verifies the validity of using the proposed system. The theoretical results compared well with the experimental ones.

  • This paper presents a laboratory investigation into the effects of fillers using industrial by-product such as coal ash, IGCC slag on properties of hot-mixed asphalt concrete variation with filler content. For comparison, existing mixture with lime and dust have also been considered. Marshall and flow test has been considered for the purpose of mix design as well as evaluation of mixture. Other performance tests such as indirect tensile strength test, tensile strength ratio(moisture susceptibility), dynamic stability have also been carried out variation with filler content. It is observed that the mixes with industrial by-product exhibit conform with quality standard. Therefore, it has been recommended to utilize industrial by-product based on fly ash wherever available, not only reducing the produce cost but also partly solve the industrial by-product utilization and disposal problem.

  • Several researches on cement zero concrete using alkali-activators have been conducted to investigate its fundamental material properties such as slump, strength and durability, however, research on the structural behavior of relevant members involving the elastic modulus, stress-strain relationship is essential for the application of this cement zero concrete to structural members. In this paper the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams using 50 MPa-alkali activated slag concrete was experimentally evaluated. To achieve such a goal, six reinforced concrete beam specimens were fabricated and their shear behaviors were observed. The maximum difference between test results and analysis results in crack shear stress for beam specimens without stirrups is 31%, while that for beam specimens with stirrup is 15%. Furthermore, it is also found that the shear strength of alkali activated slag concrete is by 22~57% greater than the nominal shear strength calculated by design code, implying that shear design equations would provide conservative results on the safety side.

  • This paper presents the geotechnical characteristics of the soil mixed with various waste(waste soil) in the landfill. The physical and mechanical tests were conducted to find out the waste soil. The tests include the gradation, consistency tests, shear and compression and the consolidation tests using both the Rowe cell and the constant ration stress. The analyses of the test results show the waste soil belongs to the well graded sand(SW) in the laboratory and sand-gravel(SG) to fine sand(SF) in the field monitoring based on the unified classification soil system. The shear strength is increasing with increasing the shear displacement, however, the peak of the shear strength does not appear through the test and there is no distinct peak value of the strength obtained. The compression index(Cc) results in as increasing the amount of the sludge included and the compression index is proportional to the sludge included, which means more settlement is expected. The hydraulic conductivity of the waste soil ranges between $1.6{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ and $1.8{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$.

  • Several researches on high volume fly ash concrete have been conducted to investigate its fundamental material properties such as slump, strength and durability and however, research on the structural behavior of bond strength is essential for the application of this high volume fly ash concrete to structural members because of the necessity of reinforcement. But the exact design code for application and researches on the bond behavior of high volume fly ash concrete lack yet. To achieve such a goal, this paper evaluates experimentally the bond behavior of high volume fly ash concretes by direct pull-out test and compares between the current test results and existing research results. By the test results, it is shown that the bond behavior of high volume fly ash concrete is similar to that of general concrete. And by the comparison between test and existing research, it is shown that bond stress of high volume fly ash concrete is underestimated, as the embedment length gets longer.

  • This paper presents the feasibility of incorporating ultrafine particles collected in the separator bag filter (separator bag filter cement, SBFC) during the cement manufacturing process as an substitution material for cement. SBFC does not require additional processes needed in the existing processes to manufacture high early strength cement such as modifying mineral components and adjusting the firing temperature. Moreover, it can also solve the issue of efficiency decrease resulted from the increase of the grinding time applied in the existing process of manufacturing microcement. Therefore, this research has examined the characteristics of SBFC and fresh properties and mechanical properties after making paste and mortar using SBFC in order to use SBFC as a material to gain early strength of concrete. For results, analyzing the chemical composition and physical properties of SBFC, its blaine value was $6,953cm^3/g$, about double than that of OPC, but its chemical composition showed no significant difference. According to the result of the paste and mortar examination, the paste and mortar mixed with SBFC showed a lower flowability, earlier setting time, and higher compressive strength than that with OPC. The result of microstructure analysis of paste, the paste mixed with SBFC indicated about 9% lower internal porosity at an early age than that of OPC. The compressive strength and flexural strength of mortar were higher in the order of SBFC ratio of 100, 50 and 0% SBFC.
