This paper presents the engineering property of light weight soil made of soil mixed with recycled Styrofoam and stabilizer. Recycled Styrofoam is widely used for lightweight fill material because it has important geotechnical characteristics which are light, adiabatic, and effective for vibration interception. It is very easy to get the disposal styrofoam. For this study, dynamic compaction test, static compaction test and pH and leaching tests were performed. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the static compaction method is recommened to prevent from crushing materials and pH values of embankment materials are satisfied with these of domestic and RCRA configuration.

In Korea, more than 30,000 tons of waste Styrofoam are produced every year. Styrofoam is spent more than 500 years decomposing during the reclamation process, so it needs to be recycled. The recycling rate of waste styrofoam continues to be the third highest in the world, but it is lower than that of Germany and Japan. Therefore, measures are needed to increase the recycling rate of waste Styropol. Another problem is that cement is mainly used in existing lightweight foam concrete. However, large amounts of CO2 from cement-producing processes cause environmental pollution. Currently, Korea is increasing its greenhouse gas reduction targets to cope with energy depletion and climate change, and accelerating efforts to identify and implement reduction measures for each sector. In 2013 alone, about 600 million tons of carbon dioxide was generated in the cement industry. Therefore, this study replaces CO2 generation cement with furnace slag fine powder, uses crude steel cement for initial strength development of bubble concrete, and manufactures hardening materials to study its properties using waste styrofoam. As a result of the experiment, the hardening agent replaced by micro powder of furnace slag was less intense and more prone to absorption than cement using ordinary cement. Further experiments on the segmentation and strength replenishment of furnace slag are believed to contribute to the manufacture of environmentally friendly lightweight foam concrete.

Resilient materials are generally used for the floating floors to reduce the floor impact sound. Dynamic stiffness of resilient material, which has the most to do with the floor impact sound reduction. The resilient materials available in Korea include EPS (Styrofoam), recycled urethane types, EVA (Ethylene Vinylacetate) foam rubber, foam PE (Polyethylene), glass fiber & rock wool, recycled tire, foam polypropylene, compressed polyester, and other synthetic materials. In this study, we tested floor impact sound reduction characteristic to a lot of kinds of resilient material. The result of test showed that the amount of the heavy-weight impact sound reduction appeared by being influenced from this dynamic stiffness of resilient material. The dynamic stiffness looked like between other resilient materials, a similar to the amount of the heavy-weight impact sound reduction was shown.

Light weight filling method prevents settlement of ground by decreasing the weight of fills. This method is increasingly used for it's convenience and workability. Styrofoam is increasingly used as a lightweight filling material in soft ground. The beneficial effects of the use of EPS derive from minimizing the stress increment, increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the settlement. For this study, model test and FEM analysis of bearing capacity is carried out composing two-layered ground with clay in the lower layer and lightweight filling material in upper layer. Based on the results obtained here in this study, it is concluded that the use of recycled EPS beads is acceptable lightweight fill. Light weight fills used for disposal is superior to typical embankment fills in bearing capacity.

Thermal insulation performance of new insulation packaging made of recycled PET nonwoven (thickness : 10 mm) was verified by conducting comparative experiment with an EPS box (thickness : 25 mm) and a double wall corrugated box (thickness : 7 mm). Three ice packs (300 g) were positioned 200 mm above the bottom inside each box, all of which are placed side by side and temperature change of 2 points (5mm under middle icepack and 130 mm under middle icepack) was recorded by data logger (GL-840, Graphtec) for 16 hours under the environment of 29℃. The new packaging box showed 75% higher insulation performance than the EPS box and 180% higher than the corrugated box. In order to figure out the reason for insulation performance difference among boxes, thermal conductivities of each box material were measured using heat flow meter (HFM436 lamda, Netzsch). U-value (thermal conductivity divided by thickness) of EPS was lower than recycled pet nonwoven by 57%, which seemed to be opposite to the result of insulation test of boxes. This was explained by high water vapor transmission rate of EPS (6 times higher than PET insulation) and air pocket effect of PET insulation.

With the aid of advanced structural engineering, the construction of infrastructures has been recently accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth. Construction activities and operation of transportation facilities cause civil petitions associated with vibration-induced damages or nuisances. As part of the decrease of vibration induced damage, the objective of this study is to develop vibration-controlled concrete with vibration-reduced materials, which can be recycled from obsolete materials, such as aged tires, plastics and etc. Appropriate mix proportion has been used for making 10 reinforced concrete panels with vibration-reduced materials, which have been tested to investigate on vibration reduction capability, based on the time and frequency domain analysis, and vibration velocity level analysis. Vibration-reduced mixtures are latex, styrofoam, rubber powder and plastic resin, which have been determined to by reduce vibration.
In this study, the results of PBDEs and HBCDs of the products and waste that contain BFRs such as domestic electronic products, automobiles and textile products were compared with international management standards, and their excess rates were calculated. Deca-BDE was detected among the PBDEs in TV rear cover plastics, car seats, automotive interior plastics, and automobile shredding residues of products and waste containing BFRs. The comparison with Basel Convention management standards (1,000 mg/kg) for PBDE-containing wastes (4 types in total) shows that the excess rate of all samples was less than 1.5%. The estimated excess rate compared to the EU and Basel convention management standards (1,000 mg/kg) for PBDEs (4 species + deca-BDE) and TV rear cover plastics was 37.5% (30 of 80 samples exceeded the standards). The estimated excess rate compared to the Basel convention management standards (1,000 mg/kg) for HBCD, building materials products and waste was 15.7% (17 of 108 samples exceeded the standards). In the case of PBDEs, it is necessary to remove only the rear cover of CRT TV among the electric and electronic products and treat it in the flame retardant treatment facility to improve the recycling collection system. In the case of HBCD, it is necessary to appropriately dispose of the recycled materials, heat insulation materials, TV plastics, and styrofoam in marine fishery among construction materials and restrict the use as recycled raw materials.

Existing the free-form concrete segments (FCS) mold is produced by state of solid such as steel, wood, Styrofoam that can not be recycled. Using FCS mold result in delay on schedule and decrease of productivity because it consists of irregular curved variety and it requires more time than fixed mold. Thus, FCS mold should be developed which can reduce the costs and also it can be used as semipermanent. The aim of this study is to suggest of flexible mold production process for using the phase change materials(PCM). PCM is maintain that its solid state at low temperature but it changes phase to liquid state by heating. PCM is suitable material for flexible mold due to change of phase in relatively high temperature compare to other phase change materials such as water. Flexible mold is possible that reuse semi-permanently made by PCM. Thus, this study is proposed the process of flexible mold production for using the PCM. The study results will be used as the basic theory for studies on production and installation of FCS.
