This study was carried out to design the optimum mixing ratio of aggregate, cyclic aggregate, and binder (moisture, emulsified asphalt, and emulsion type additives) and produce recycling cold asphalt paving mixture satisfying site work standard. The cyclic aggregate satisfying KS F 2572 was collected from waste asphalt by adequate processing. As the moisture content increased, the shearing strength was decreased. The maximum marshall stability was shown at the 3.0 wt% moisture content. So the optimum moisture content was 3.0 wt%. The marshall stability and flow value with the amount of emulsified asphalt was satisfied in the range of 0.5~2.5 wt%, and the porosity was satisfied in the range of 0.7~2.5 wt%. So the optimum amount of emulsified asphalt was 1.6 wt%. The optimum amount of emulsion type additive was 0.1 wt% in the light of marshall stability and degree of saturation of recycling cold asphalt mixture.
This study evaluated the asphalt binder characteristics for the hot-recycled asphalt mixture in which RAP was added in ambient temperature for surface course as well as for base course. RAPs were collected from four sources and their physical properties were evaluated. Mix designs were performed using 10 and 20% RAP contents for surface courses and 10, 20 and 30% for base courses. A virgin asphalt with the penetration grade of 60-80 was used for mixing recycled mixtures. Physical properties of recycled binders, including penetration, absolute viscosity, GPC, BBR and penetration after TFO were measured. From the results, regression analysis of absolute viscosity versus LMS in GPC showed $R^2$ being over 0.95, showing that GPC results estimate the absolute viscosity with relative accuracy. In BBR test, the resistance of recycled mixtures at low service temperature was inferior to the control, because the low temperature PG of recycled binder was one grade higher than that of the control binder.
PURPOSES : This study determined the optimal usage rate of RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) using cold central-plant recycling (CCPR) on a road-surface layer. In addition, a mixture-aggregate gradation design and a curing method based on the proposed rate for the surface-layer mix design were proposed. METHODS : First, current research trends were investigated by analyzing the optimum moisture content, mix design, and quality standards for surface layers in Korea and abroad. To analyze the aggregate characteristics of the RAP, its aggregate-size characteristics were analyzed through the combustion asphalt content test and the aggregate sieve analysis test. Moreover, aggregate-segregation experiments were performed to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation from field compaction and vehicle traffic. After confirming the RAP quality standards, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate, aggregate-gradation design and quality tests were conducted for mixtures with 40% and 50% RAP usage. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture containing RAP was tested, as was the evapotranspiration effect on the surface-layer mixture of the optimum moisture content. RESULTS : After analyzing the RAP recycled aggregate size and extraction aggregate size, 13-8mm aggregate was found to be mostly 8mm aggregate after combustion. After using surface-chipping and mixing methods to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation, it was found that the mixing method contributed very little for 3.32%, and because the surface-chipping method applied compaction energy directly as the maximum assumption the separation ratio was 15.46%. However, the composite aggregate gradation did not change. Using a 40% RAP aggregate rate on the surface-layer mixture for cold central-plant recycling satisfied the Abroad quality standard. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture was found to be 7.9% using the modified Marshall compaction test. It was found that the mixture was over 90% cured after curing at $60^{\circ}C$ for two days. CONCLUSIONS : To use the cold central-plant recycling mixture on a road-surface layer, a mixture-aggregate gradation design was proposed as the RAP recycled aggregate size without considering aggregate segregation, and the RAP optimal usage rate was 40%. In addition, the modified Marshall compaction test was used to determine the optimum moisture content as a mix-design parameter, and the curing method was adapted using the method recommended by Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA).

In order to expanding of the use of steel slag, a by-product of steel industry, as a road paving construction material, this present study confirmed the possibility of the rust formation of steel slag aggregate and evaluated the durability performance and the noise reduction characteristics of asphalt concrete mixture. As a result of conducting the rust formation test of aggregate, no rust was observed in both aggregate, so it is judged that the possibility of rust formation in the actual road water environment is very low. As a result of performing the moisture resistance test, all mixtures showed a tensile strength ratio exceeding 85%, satisfied the standard as asphalt mixture. In addition, the sound absorption coefficient of the steel slag aggregate mixture was measured to be higher than that of the general aggregate mixture. Accordingly, it is speculated th at th e steel slag aggregate mixture can more effectively respond to road noise reduction than the general mixture.

When producing recycled asphalt mix, it is important that the old binder of reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP) should be well melted during blending in the mixer. The recycled asphalt mix is produced by instant mixing(IM) of all materials(RAP, virgin asphalt and new aggregates) all together in the mixer. However, in the same recycled mix, the binder around RAP aggregate was found to show higher oxidation level than the binder coated around the virgin aggregate because the old binder of RAP was not rejuvenated properly while instant mixing. The partially-rejuvenated RAP binder is assumed to be a high stiffness point in IM recycled mix. In this study, the stage mixing(SM) method was introduced; blending RAP and virgin asphalt for the first stage, and then mixing all together with hot new aggregates for the second stage. To compare the effect of the two mixing methods on moisture resistance of recycled mixes, a statistical t-test was performed between SM and IM using indirect tensile strength(ITS) and tensile strength ratio(TSR). Three conditioning methods were used; a 16-h freezing and then 24-h submerging, 48-h submerging, and 72-h submerging in 60℃ water. It was found that the TSR(=ITSwet/ITSdry) values of the mixes prepared by SM was clearly higher than the IM mixes, and coefficients of variation of SM mixes were lower than the IM mixes. It was also observed that the ITSWET of SM was significantly different from the IM at α=0.05 level by statistical t-test. The ITSWET of SM mix was reduced less than the IM mix in severer conditioned mixes. Therefore, it was concluded that the stage mixing method was an important blending technique for producing better-quality of recycled asphalt mixes, which would show higher moisture resistance than the recycled mixes produced by conventional instant mixing.

Asphalt pavement accounts for more than 90% of the total pavement in Korea. Pavement is most widely constructed among construction structures. The heat transfer characteristics (Thermophysical Properties) of the asphalt pavement cause the heat island effect in downtown areas. An increasing asphalt surface temperature is one of the major causes of damage to asphalt pavement. This study examined the heat transfer characteristic factors according to solar energy accumulation in an asphalt mixture. The specimens (WC-2 & PA-13, Recycled aggregate used WC-2) used in the experiment were compacted with a Gyratory Compactor. The thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal emissivity) and solar energy accumulation were evaluated. The thermal accumulation and HFM tests revealed a 1.2- to 2.0-fold difference. This indicates that the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture pavement changes with the accumulation of solar energy. An analysis of the correlation of thermal conductivity according to the surface temperature of the asphalt mixture showed that WC-2 was logarithmic, and PA-13 was linear. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of asphalt pavement that can be used for thermal failure modeling of asphalt were conducted.

The new asphalt surface reinforcement method (ASRM) is one of the preventive maintenance methods in asphalt concrete pavements. The adhesion performance of new ASRM satisfied the standard of non-slip pavement and bridge waterproofing materials. As a results of durability tests (as wheel load, rolling bottle and UV resistance test), the new ASRM showed sufficient resistance to traffic and environmental loads. The waterproof and chemical resistance tests of new ASRM were conducted to evaluate whether the pavement could be protected from water and chemicals and the performances of new ASRM were satisfactory. Furthermore, the new ASRM demonstrated some rejuvenation effects due to its toughness increases in recycled asphalt concrete mixture by 5% compared to the conventional hot mix asphalt mixture using reclaimed asphalt pavement. In conclusion, the new ASRM was evaluated to protect the asphalt concrete pavement and increase the lifetime.

As an increase in the amount of RAP, there are growing interests in recycling asphalt concrete. In case of using the RAP as recycled asphalt pavement, it tends to be quality deteriorate. Therefore, the amount of RAP using is advised to be limited or has to be used with rejuvenator. In this study, asphalt mixture containing WMRA was analyzed to be used up to 50% for the sake of convenience on the process. As the results of evaluation, there was no significant difference in case of using 30% of RAP in the test of Marshall stability. However, in case of WMRA using up to 50%, it was satisfied criteria by flow value at 34.7. Further, result of toughness test was found that the crack resistance showed 55% higher than using straight asphalt when using WMRA binder up to 50%. According to the results of directly comparing crack resistance through repeated direct tensile test, it was shown that the fatigue crack resistance of WMRA pavement was increased by 263%. Therefore, it was shown that WMRA binder was effective in recycling RAP because WMRA binder could increase the percentage of RAP using up to 50%.

This paper presents a laboratory investigation into the effects of fillers using industrial by-product such as coal ash, IGCC slag on properties of hot-mixed asphalt concrete variation with filler content. For comparison, existing mixture with lime and dust have also been considered. Marshall and flow test has been considered for the purpose of mix design as well as evaluation of mixture. Other performance tests such as indirect tensile strength test, tensile strength ratio(moisture susceptibility), dynamic stability have also been carried out variation with filler content. It is observed that the mixes with industrial by-product exhibit conform with quality standard. Therefore, it has been recommended to utilize industrial by-product based on fly ash wherever available, not only reducing the produce cost but also partly solve the industrial by-product utilization and disposal problem.
