  • Blast furnace slag, a by-product of the steel industry, is mostly recycled as concrete admixture, but electric arc furnace slag has not been recycled to date. In particular, since electric arc furnace slag partially contains free lime (free-CaO) in the discharge, it is necessary to review this in order to recycle f or construction materials. Recently an atomizing process which is a method of rapidly cooling electric arc furnace slag has been developed and applied. Therefore, in order to use the fine aggregate of oxidized slag from electric furnace restored by this method as an aggregate for concrete, physical damage and chemical reviewing are required. In this study, a physical and chemical review was conducted on the fine aggregate of Electric Arc Furnace Oxidizing Slag (EFOS) as a by-product of the steel manufacturing process with atomizing process. In this experimental study, EFOS was experimentally examined about whether it can be used as concrete fine aggregate. Also, we intend to provide basic data for the future use of the EFOS fine aggregate. As a result of the experimental study, it was found that the fine aggregate of the EFOS satisfied the quality standards of the fine aggregate for concrete in most items specified by Korean Standard.

  • In order to recycle sewage dredging soil, we analyzed particle size distribution and organic content of dredged sewage sediments. Based on this, it was determined that particles with relatively low organic content of 1.0 mm or more could be recycled as fine aggregate. Although it was inorganic at the size of 5 mm or more, it contained a number of foreign substances other than fine aggregate, which were needed to be removed with a sieve. Since there are volatile suspended solids between 1.0 and 5.0 mm size, they were removed by means of flotation. Fine aggregate was obtained from dredging soil by screening followed with flotation method, and the proportion of fine aggregate obtained in this study was around 38 %.

  • In order to recycle the waste concrete from which the reproductive aggregate should be produced in-situ, the applicability of crushers and recycled aggregates, and the compliance with the specification have been evaluated comprehensively. As a result of them, the properties of recycled aggregate particles were inferior to the natural one because of the adherent mortars on the recycled one, and the mobile impact crusher and the eccentric-mounted cone and jaw were superior to the others for the graded aggregates. In the case of anti-frost layer, the recycled one was easily controlled since the dry densities, contrary to natural one, were not largely changed with the moisture contents. It was found that the lean concrete base course is not influenced by absorption as cement dust grows larger, and the 7-day compressive strengths of lean concrete were higher than 10 MPa regardless of the crushing type.

  • To recycle the steel slag as manufactured composite materials of polymer concretes, we used the atomizing method to make round aggregates from steel slag, which is treated as industrial wastes. A round rapid-cooled steel slag was used to replace fine aggregate (river sand) or coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. To examine general physical properties of polymer concrete composites manufactured from rapid-cooled steel slag, the polymer concrete specimen with various proportions depending on the addition ratio of polymer binder and replacement ratio of rapid-cooled steel slag were manufactured. In the result of the tests, the mechanical strength of the specimen made by replacing the optimum amount of rapid-cooled steel slag increased notably (maximum compressive strength 117.1 MPa), and the use of polymer binder, which had the most impact on the production cost of polymer concrete composites, could be remarkably reduced. However, the mechanical strength of the specimen was markedly reduced in hot water resistance test of polymer concrete composite.

  • In this study, the stability and EMP shielding performance of metal-based industrial by-products aggregates with excellent conductivity and easy procurement to be used as concrete aggregates for EMP shielding are evaluated. The industrial by-products are electronic-arc-furnace oxidizing slag, copper smelting slag, and ferro-moldibdenum. The composition analysis of aggregates and aggregate stability are evaluated. As a result of the experiment, ferro-moldibdenum is shown to have l ow stability as an aggregate due to its high Free-CaO. The remaining aggregates are evaluated to be safe to use as aggregates for concrete. In addition, industrial by-products aggreagate-specimens excluding ferro-moldibdenum are shown higher compressive strength than the plain specimen. The recycle aggregates, electronic-arc-furnace oxidizing slag and copper smelting slag, are shown excellent EMP shielding performance, the EMP shielding performance is expected to increase if the average particle diameter of the aggregate is small or evenly distributed.

  • In this study, prevention methods of radial cracks generated inside of artificial lightweight aggregate made of reject ash and dredged soil were investigated. The reject ash and dredged soil had mixed with weight ratio of 7 : 3 and formed to spheric shape of 5~20 mm diameter, then, the aggregates were manufactured using flash sintering method at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The formation of radial cracks in the aggregates were suppressed as the size of specimen decreased. Also, the addition of silica to aggregates had prevented generation of the radial cracks. As the size and the amount of silica powder added increased, the development of radial cracks was constrained. Therefore the artificial lightweight aggregate manufactured in this study expected to be applicable to many fields such as construction and environmental usages. Also it is expected to contribute greatly to increase the recycling rate of reject ash and dredged soil.

  • It is reported that a lot of sludge powder is produced during the process of manufacturing crushed fine aggregate in mines. However, there is a limitation on the its use that most of them are disposed and wasted, which cause environmental pollution. Therefore, in this paper, tests are carried out in order to recycle sludge powder as filler for cement mortar products. Kinds of aggregates and mix proportion of mortar are varied under various contents of sludge powder. According to test results, it is found that cement mortar products using sludge powder as substitution of fine aggregate about 10% have better qualities than those without sludge powder.

  • The mixed body of clay and flyash containing unburnt carbon was examined at various sintering conditions in order to recycle flyash as environment-affinitive construction materials. Experimental results can be summarized as follows : when large aggregate of 2.54 cm dia. was sintered at a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C$/min, heterogeneous phase with bulgings, inner pores, and cracks were observed at the sintering temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, heating patterns for the complete removal of the heterogeneous phase were proposed as countermeasures. The compressive strength of finally obtained aggregate was 670~870kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, which is over two and a half times stronger than the minimum requirement of 200kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve recycling rate of the waste glasses by investigating bloating mechanism. In this study, we use waste glass(W/G) and hard clay(H/C) as raw materials. The artificial lightweight aggregates were formed by plastic forming($\phi$=10 mm) and sintered by fast firing method at different temperatures(between 700 and $1250^{\circ}C$). The physical properties of the aggregates such as bulk specific gravity, adsorption and microstructure of surface and cross-section are investigated with the sintering temperature and rate of W/G-H/C contents. As the result of the bulk specific gravity graphs, we can found out the inflection point at content of W/G 60 wt%. From the microstructure images, we considered the artificial lightweight aggregates content of W/ G over 60wt% are distributed numerous micro-pores by organic oxidation without Black Core and the artificial lightweight aggregates of W/G below 60 wt% are distributed macro-pores with Black Core.

  • The coal bottom ash and reject ash discharged from a coal-fired power plant are difficult to recycle so most of them are mainly landfill-disposed. In this study, the artificial aggregate were produced using reject ash, bottom ash and dredged soil emitted from the coal-fired power plant in Korea and the effect of experimental factors on the bloating behavior and the properties of the aggregates were analyzed. In particular, a lot of unburned carbon in the reject ash was removed by calcination and the activated carbon was added to batch powders then the dependence of those process upon bloating properties of artificial aggregate were investigated. For this purpose, the specific gravity and water absorption values of artificial aggregates were investigated in conjunction with microstructural observations. This study could contribute to increase the recycling rate of the reject ash.
