  • Recently, a tiny piezoelectric linear motor using a vibration made of the transducer has been invented. The motor consists of a shaft, mobile element, and piezoelectric transducer using a piezoelectric radial mode bimorph disk. The fringe of the bimorph disk is fixed firmly which means this area has no degree of freedom. Therefore, the radial mode of the tranducer transfers to the flexurd mode. The mobile elements move along the shaft by the impact force generated by the flexurd mode of the piezoelectric transducer. The piezoelectric ceramic disks have thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.5 mm. The elastic disk is introduced between two disks of the ceramic, which has thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.8 mm. The fringe of the elastic disk is fixed by a brass cylinder which height is 1.2 mm. The Pyrex shaft is used which has diameter of 1 mm and height of 10 mm. The motors are operated at their resonant frequencies. The dynamic properties of the motor have been intensively measured and analyzed according to the applied voltage wave forms at the resonant frequencies. As the sawtooth and rectangular voltage waves are applied, the velocity, the thrust force, and the velocity dependence of the mobile position are measured. The dynamic characteristics are also analyzed within a period of each wave using laser vibrometer. The velocity of the mobile is moderately constant along the shaft. The better dynamic characteristics are obtained in the case of applying the rectangular wave.

  • In this paper, an analysis and design method is proposed, which is to improve the directivity of microstrip array antennas conformed to a cylindrical surface. In the case of forming an arc-array in the circumferential direction on a circula-cylinder surface, the circular-cylinder can be approximated to a polygonal-pillar and on each pillar-planes the sub-arrays, Dolph-Tschebyscheff array and uniform array with a beam steered in the desired direction, would make a sharp directivity for the total cylin- drical array antenna. And the radiation pattern according to the type of its sub arrays is analyzed and compared using the cylindrical-cavity codel. A cylindrical microstrip array antenna, with 12 elements and uniform arra as a sub-array which have an equal distance$\lambda_0$/2between the elements, is manufactured and conformed to a cylinder with radius of 6 The measured data of side lobe level, HPBW and FNBW are - 13dB, $9^{\circ}$, and $15{\circ}$, ,respectively. This result shows a good improvement on the directivity comparing with a linear array.

  • The effect of axial stress on the plastic deformation of rigid-perfectly plastic cylindrical tube under the impulsive band pressure is investigated. It is assumed that the tube is constructed with the material of Tresca's yield criterion. A closed from sloution is obtained for a rectangular pulse shape of uniform band pressure by using the circumscribed yield surface. The analysis shows that the effect ot exial stress is negligible when the dimensionless axial stress(n$\sub$x/= N$\sub$x/.delta.$\sub$y/H) is less than 0.2 or the dimensionless whdth of band pressure(.xi.=C/.root.RH) is greater than 2, but the effect of axial stress is of considerable importance when the axial stress is greater than 0.3 and the width of band pressure is less than 1.

  • Numerical simulation is made of the three-dimensional wave breaking motion about a part of a floating offshore structure containing a circular cylinder mounted vertically onto a lower hull in regular periodic gravity wave generated by a numerical wave maker. TUMMAC-VIII finite-difference method is newly developed for such a problem. By use of density-function technique the three-dimensional wave breaking motion is approximately implenented in the framework of rectangular grid system. A porosity technique is devised for the implementation of the no-slip bydy boundary conditions. The generation of breaking waves by the interaction of incident waves with the structure is well simulated and interesting features of breaking waves are revealed with containing degree of quantitative and qualitative accuracy.

  • Mass transfer experiment by naphthalene sublimation method has great advantages in measurement of local transfer coefficients in the region of a three dimensional flow or for a model of complex geometry, which is considered to be very difficult with conventional heat transfer measurements. Mass transfer data obtained by naphthalene sublimation technique are converted to the heat transfer data through heat/mass transfer analogy. This analogy is valid for a simple or laminar flow, but new insight is needed when applying to a turbulent flow or complex flow such as separation, reattachment and recirculation, The purpose of this research is to investigate how geometries and flow conditions incorporate heat/mass transfer analogy. Mass transfer experiments are performed using naphthalene sublimation technique for a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and rectangular cylinders. And mass transfer data are compared with earlier heat transfer measurements for the same geometries. Usefulness of analogy relation between heat and mass transfer is examined with these results.

  • The subsurface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the contact pressure in lubricated condition has been calculated. To evaluate the influence of the clearance shape on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models were chosen. One is the conventional cylinder contact model and the other is the new numerical model. Love's rectangular patch solution was used to obtain the subsurface stress field. The analysis results show that the subsurface stress is quite dependent on both the contact pressure and the profile model. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.

  • The effects of wan thermal boundary condition were investigated for a uniform wall temperature, a uniform wall heat flux, and for coupled heat conduction In the channel wall with transverse rectangular ribs. Numerical investigations for steady laminar flow show behavior similar to that observed experimentally in the separated flow region for flow over a cylinder. Conjugate heat transfer with a low solid-fluid thermal conductivity ratio does not lead to the same results as for the uniform heat flux boundary condition, and heat transfer reversal is found on the back sides of the ribs.

  • To predict flow fields and chemical agent dispersion in urban area, wind tunnel experiments was performed. The agent was adopted MS (methyl salicylate) because the real chemical agent is unsafe. The exact concentration of methyl salicylate was generated by the commercial gas generator (STI-2500) and three different obstacle shapes were applied (i.e., rectangular, cylinder and pyramid). The concentration was measured with the qualified ion mobility sensor and gas chromatography. The data necessary for virtual test method of the real chemical agent were obtained.

  • In this paper, the spin-up from rest to a state of solid-body rotation in a circular container with a slender rectangular obstacle on the bottom wall is analysed experimentally. We use a PIV method for the evolution of the free-surface flow. Laboratory experiments have been carried out for a variety of the obstacle height h(0, 5, 10 [mm]) and the liquid depth H(25, 50, 75, 100 [mm]). It was found that the spin-up time is crucially dependent on the obstacle height T. In the case of T=10[mm] the spin-up time is considerably shorter then the other cases.

  • The wavelet analysis technique is applied in the spectral domain to efficiently represent the multi-scale features of the impedance matrices. In this scheme, the 2-D quadtree decomposition (applying the wavelet transform to only the part of the matrix) method often used in image processing area is applied for a sparse moment matrix. CG(Conjugate-Gradient) method is also applied for saving memory and computation time of wavelet transformed moment matrix. Numerical examples show that for rectangular cylinder case the non-zero elements of the transformed moment matrix grows only as O($N^{1.6}$).
