  • Unstiffened plates are integral part of all kinds of structures such as ship and offshore oil platforms. Openings are unavoidable and absolutely reduce the ultimate strength of structures. In this study, the finite element analysis package, ABAQUS, is used to analyze the behavior of unstiffened plate with rectangular opening. The rectangular opening form is divided into two cases. In case1, opening depth is constant, but opening width is varied. Meanwhile, in case2 opening width is fixed and opening depth is varied. Besides, for the two different form opening, the effect of plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$), opening area ratio (AR) and opening position ratio (PR) on the ultimate strength of plate with opening under axial compression are presented. It has been found that the ultimate strength of plate ofcase1is much more sensitive to the plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$) and opening area ratio (AR) than that of case2. However, for case1, opening position (PR) almost has no effect on the ultimate strength, whereas, regardingcase2, the influence of opening position (PR) depends on the plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$). Based on nonlinear regression analysis, three design formulae are not only developed but also approved reasonably for the practical engineering design.

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the influences of rectangular fins on heat transfer in an impingement/effusion cooling system with crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter. The crossflow passes between the plates, and various rectangular fins are installed on the plates. Reynolds number based on the hole diameter is fixed to 10,000 and the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.5 to 1.5 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to obtain the heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Also to analyze the flow characteristics, a numerical calculation is performed. When rectangular fins are installed, the flow and heat transfer pattern is changed greatly from case without fins. In the injection hole region, the jet impinges on effusion plate without deflection and wall jet spreads symmetrically. In the effusion region, the crossflow accelerates due to the decrease of cross-sectional area in the channel. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients are enhanced significantly compared to case without fins. As the blowing ratio increases, the effect of fins against the crossflow becomes more significant and then the higher average heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained than the case without fins.

  • Confined natural convection due to lateral temperature difference in rectangular enclosures was studied numerically and experimentally for the insulated and the constant temperature enclosures. In the case of insulated enclosure, the flow pattern and heat transfer modes are rather simple depending mainly upon Rayleigh number. In the case of isothermal enclosure, however, the phenomena of flow and heat transfer are somewhat complex and interesting due to the stable thermal gradients and various circumstances resulted from four wall temperature conditions. As a dimensionless variable, to describe properly the flow and heat transfer phenomena in the isothermal enclosure, temperature difference ratio ${\Delta}T_v/{\Delta}T_H$ is newly introduced and this parameter seems to be appropriate in the analysis of results on the effect of stabilizing thermal gradient.

  • In the present study, in order to investigate the effect of the corner filling in the drawing of the rectangular rod from a round bar, the drawing of the square rod from a round bar has been simulated by using rigid-plastic finite element method and artificial neural network has been introduced to reduce the number of simulation. The experimental investigation has been also implemented to verify the efficiency of the application of results of present and previous study. According to the results of present and pervious study, the combination of semi-die angle gives a great effect on the corner filling in case of the irregular shaped drawing process, but, in case of the regular shaped drawing process, the main process variable on the corner filling is reduction in area.

  • This empirical paper addresses the phenomena of the contact melting of PCM in horizontal capsules of circular and rectangular cross sections with various aspect ratio. The melting-rate tends to increase as the Stefan number increases. The case of rectangular tube displays larger melting-rate than that of circular tube, and the melting-rate increases as the aspect ratio decreasws for rectangular tubes. In case of circular tube, the effect of natural convection on the melting-rate is 6.1%, 8.6% and 11.2% according to Stefan number 0.0772, 0.1287 and 0.1802 respectively.

  • This paper aims to investigate the free vibration analysis of FG plates, taking into account the effects of even and uneven porosity. The study employs the Hellinger-Reisner functional and obtains the element's bending stress and membrane stress fields from the analytical solution of the governing equations of the thick plate and plane problem, respectively. The displacement field serves as the second independent field. While few articles on free vibration analysis of circular plates exist, this paper investigates the free vibration of both rectangular and circular plates. After validating the proposed element, the paper investigates the effects of porosity distributions on the natural frequency of the FG porous plate. The study calculates the natural frequency of thin and thick bending plates with different aspect ratios and support conditions for various porosity and volume fraction index values. The study uses three types of porosity distributions, X, V, and O, for the uneven porosity distribution case. For O and V porosity distribution modes, porosity has a minor effect on the natural frequency for both circular and rectangular plates. However, in the case of even porosity distribution or X porosity distribution, the effect of porosity on the natural frequency of circular and rectangular plates increases with an increase in the volume fraction index.

  • Deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section is different with that for axisymmetric circular one. Therefore deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section requires several intermediate steps to generate the final configuration without any significant defect. In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process for high precision rectangular cases is carried out especially for an extreme aspect ratio. The analysis is performed using rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme of the commercial program, LS-DYNA3D. The sheet blank is modeled using eight-node continuum brick elements. The results of analysis show that the irregular contact condition between blank and die affects the occurrence of failure, and the difference of aspect ratio in the drawn section leads to non-uniform metal flow, which may cause failure. A series of experiments for multi-stage deep drawing process for the rectangular cases are conducted, and the deformation configuration and the thickness distribution of the drawn rectangular cases are investigated by comparing with the results of the numerical analysis. The numerical analysis with an explicit time integration scheme shows good agreement with the experimental observation.

  • Experimental investigations of the longitudinal vortices, which are produced by wing type vortex generators set up behind a circular cylinder in a rectangular channel, are presented. When the circular cylinder is set up in the rectangular channel, a horseshoe vortex is formed just upsteam of the circular cylinder. It generates a turbulent wake region behind the circular cylinder. Therefore, the region of the pressure loss behind the circular cylinder in increased and the size of the wake is small. These problems can be achieved by longitudinal vortices which are generated by wing-type vortex generator. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from 20 degree to 45, but the spacing between the vortex generators is fixed 6cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements are made using a five-hole probe. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. The following results are obtained. Circulation strength is the maximum value when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$, and the vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour in case of $\beta$=$20^{\circ}$ show the trend similar to these in case of $\beta$=$30^{\circ}$, but do not in case of $\beta$=$45^{\circ}$.

  • Deep drawing and ironing are the major process used today in manufacturing of battery case used in cellular phone and IMT-2000 from aluminum. The same technology is utilized in manufacturing of steel or aluminum rectangular cans for components of medical instrument, portable PC, walkman and so on. Most of these processes require multi-stage ironing following the deep drawing and redrawing processes. The practical aspects of this technology are well known and gained through extensive experiment and production know-how. However, the fundamental aspects of theses processes are relatively less known. Thus, it is expected that process simulations using FEM techniques would provide additional detailed information that could be utilized to improve the process condition. This paper illustrates the application of process modeling to deep drawing and redrawing operations with the cellular phone and IMT-2000. A commercially avaliable finite element code LS-DYNA3D was used to simulate deep drawing and redrawing operations.
