Shape Optimization of High Power Centrifugal Compressor Using Multi-Objective Optimal Method (다목적 최적화 기법을 이용한 고출력 원심압축기 형상 최적설계)

  • In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller and diffuser blades in the centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was evaluated. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various values of impeller and diffuser parameters, which consist of leading edge (LE) angle, trailing edge (TE) angle, and blade thickness. Each of the parameters was divided into three levels. A total of 45 design points were planned using central composite design (CCD), which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces that were generated on the basis of the results of DOE were used to determine the optimal shape of impeller and diffuser blade. The entire process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Through the optimization, isentropic efficiency and pressure recovery coefficient, which are the main performance parameters of the centrifugal compressor, were increased by 0.3 and 5, respectively.

  • The recovery of metals from printed circuit board(PCBs) scraps was investigated by utilizing a shape sorting method.After all electronic parts mounted on the board were removed. PCBs were pulverized to particles smaller than 1 mm by aswing hammer type impact mill in order to liberate metal components. Metals were separated from nonmetalliccomponents by an inclined vibrating plate (IVP). The metal separation efficiency was measured as a function of vihrationintensity and inclined angle. The maximum efficiency was obtained when IVP was operated at the vibration intensity(Kv)of 1.40 and the inclined angle of 10". The grade of the metal components was recovered from PCBs exceeding 90% byusing IVP.0% by using IVP.

Anterior Cervical Interbody Fusion with the Carbon Composite Osta-Pek Frame Cage in Degenerative Cervical Diseases

  • Objective: Different types of interbody fusion cages are available for use in the surgical treatment of degenerative cervical diseases. The purpose of this study is to assess the technical feasibility, clinical efficacy and radiological results of intervertebral fusion with a carbon composite Osta-Pek frame cage (Co-Ligne AG, Switzerland) following anterior cervical discectomy. Methods: 41 patients (25males and 16females) with minimum 6months follow-up were included in the study. Disc height, cervical lordotic angle, segmental angle, and fusion rate were assessed by lateral radiographs. In this retrospective analysis, clinical outcome was assessed as evaluated according to Odom's criteria. Results: Fifty-four cages were implanted in 30 single-level, 9 two-level, and 2 three-level procedures. The mean disc height, cervical lordosis angle, segmental angle were $4.2{\pm}1.8mm,\;23.5{\pm}7.2^{\circ},\;2.3{\pm}3.3^{\circ}$ pre-operatively and $5.3{\pm}2.1mm,\;24.2{\pm}8.3^{\circ},\;3.8{\pm}3.5^{\circ}$ at 6months after the surgery. Six months after surgery, there was radiographic evidence of fusion in 92.7% (38/41) of the patients. According to Odom's criteria, 37 of 41 (90.2%) patients experienced good to excellent functional recovery. Conclusion: These clinical and radiological results suggest that the carbon composite Osta-Pek frame cages are safe and effective alternative to autologous bone graft after anterior cervical discectomy for treatment of degenerative cervical disease.

  • Many ships in voyage experience weight and buoyancy distribution change by various reasons such as change of sea water density and waves, weather condition, and consumption of fuel, provisions, etc . The weight and buoyancy distribution change can bring the ships out of allowable trim, heeling angle. In these case, the ships should adjust trim and heeling angle by shifting of liquid cargo or ballasting, deballasting of ballast tanks for recovery of initial state or for a stable voyage. But, if the adjustment is performed incorrectly, ship's safety such as longitudinal strength, intact stability, propeller immersion, wide visibility, minimum forward draft cannot be secured correctly. So it is required that the adjustment of trim and heeling angle should be planned not by human operators but by optimization computer algorithm. To make an optimized plan to adjust trim and heeling angle guaranteeing the ship's safety and quickness of process, Uk! combined mechanical analysis and optimization algorithm. The candidate algorithms for the study were heuristic algorithm, meta-heuristic algorithm and uninformed searching algorithm. These are widely used in various kinds of optimization problems. Among them, heuristic algorithm $A^\ast$ was chosen for its optimality. The $A^\ast$ algorithm is then applied for the study. Three core elements of $A^\ast$ Algorithm consists of node, operator, evaluation function were modified and redefined. And we analyzed the $A^\ast$ algorithm by considering cooperation with loading instrument installed in most ships. Finally, the algorithm has been applied to tanker ship's various conditions such as Normal Ballast Condition, Homo Design Condition, Alternate Loading Condition, Also the test results are compared and discussed to confirm the efficiency and the usefulness of the methodology developed the system.

  • The SPICE (Sparse Iterative Covariance-based Estimation) algorithm estimates the azimuth angle by applying a sparse recovery method to the covariance matrix in the time domain. In this paper, we show how the SPICE algorithm, which was originally formulated in the time domain, can be extended to the frequency domain. Furthermore, we demonstrate, through numerical results, that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of the conventional frequency domain algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in easy-care and strength properties of the wet fixation processed viscose rayon fabrics. Rayon fabrics were treated with mixed resins of melamine formaldehyde (MF) and DMDHEU by one bath and two bath wet fixation processes. The MF/DMDHEU mixed resin concentrations were 50/100, 50/150, 100/100, 100/150 and 150/100(g/1). Magnasium chloride was used as a catalyst. Treated fabrics were evaluated by nitrogen content, DP rating, wrinkle recovery angle, breaking strength, tearing strength and abrasion resistance. The properties were compared to the fabrics treated by conventional Pad-Dry-Cure (PDC) method. Wet fixation processed fabrics showed DP ratings of higher than 3 and higher than 275 degrees of wrinkle recovery angles in all the mixed resin concentrations. Wet fixation processed fabrics showed increase in breaking strength and tearing strength but decrease in abrasion resistance. However, the decrease in abrasion resistance was much less than the conventional PDC treated fabrics. The one bath wet fixation processed fabrics showed better physical properties than the two bath processed fabrics in general. The optimum treatment condition was the mixed resin concentration of MF/DMDHEU, 100/100 g/l in one bath wet fixation process.

  • This study evaluate the effect of laundering on the deformation of knitted spandex/cotton fabrics compared with that of knitted cotton fabrics. Commercial knitted spandex/cotton and knitted cotton fabrics for T-shits were laundered in a drum-type washing machine and dried in a tumble dryer. Wale spirality, shrinkage, elastic recovery and surface contour of knitted fabrics were investigated under different laundering conditions: washing temperature, presoaking time and washing cycles. Knitted spandex/cotton fabrics had a lower angle of spirality than knitted cotton fabrics. After the first washing cycle, the angles of spirality of all the fabrics had decreased greatly. Knitted cotton fabric of low density deformed more than that of higher density. Knitted spandex/cotton. fabric of low density shrank less, because of the greater extension given during heat-set. Permanent elongation length at the 80$\%$ extension was longer than at the 50$\%$ extension, and the knitted spandex/cotton fabric which was expanded greatly during heat-set had a lower elastic recovery rate. The surface appearance of the knitted spandex/cotton fabrics was worsl~ than that of the knitted cotton fabrics before laundering and after repeated laundering, because of the much protruded cotton fibers from the yarns.

Ultra-fine Grained Aluminum Alloy Sheets fabricated by Roll Bonding Process

  • Ultra-fine grained (UFG) Al alloys, which have submicron grain structures, are expected to show outstanding high strength at ambient temperature and excellent superplastic deformation at elevated temperatures and high strain rate. In order to get the UFG microstructure, various kind of severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes have been developed. Among these processes, accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process is a promising process to make bulky Al sheets with ultrafine grained structure continuously. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the grain refinement mechanism during the ARB process and to investigate on the effects of ultra-fine grained structure on the mechanical properties. In addition, UFG AA8011 alloy (Al-0.72wt%Fe-0.63wt%Si) manufactured by the ARB had fairly large tensile elongation, keeping on the strength. In order to clarify the reason for the increase of elongation in the UFG AA8011 alloy, detailed microstructural and crystallographic analysis was performed by TEM/Kikuchi-line and SEM/EBSP method. The unique tensile properties of the UFG AA8011 alloy could be explained by enhanced dynamic recovery at ambient temperature, owing to the large number of high angle boundaries and the Al matrix with high purity.

Significance of Intraoperative BAEPs Monitoring during Microvascular Decompression Surgery (미세혈관 감압술중 뇌간청각유발전위 감시장치의 유용성)

  • Objective : Surgery for the microvascular decompression is mostly concerned with injury to the cranial nerves or brain stem by cerebellar retraction. Intraopeartive brain stem auditory evoked potentials(BAEPs) has been continuously monitored on surgery to evaluate the extent of injury, recovery of the nerves and prognosis. Methods : Of the 161 cases of CP angle surgery from Feb. 1996 to Apr. 1998, 103 cases were monitored during operation. Thirty five patients who had undergone similar surgery were selected and evaluated ; 23 patients were monitored and 12 were not during surgery. If monitor showed more than 0.5 mSec delay of latency, surgeon was given a warning not to retract brain any more. If more than 1mSec delay, surgeon was informed to stop surgery and wait for the returning of evoked potentials. The level of amplitudes and delay of latencies during the initial stage of operation, opening the dura, insertion of teflon patches, and closing the dura and recovery were then compared. Resuls : Twenty patients were male and 15 were female. Their average age was 50.26 years. Mean amplitude during the initial stage of operation was $0.60{\pm}0.25mV$, at opening the dura $0.56{\pm}0.26$, after teflon patches insertion $0.49{\pm}0.20$, and after closure of dura $0.47{\pm}0.28mV$. Mean latency during the early stage of operation was $6.08{\pm}0.67mSec$, at opening of dura $6.38{\pm}0.55$, insertion of teflon $6.97{\pm}0.59$, and closing the dura $6.17{\pm}0.54$. There was statistical significance in the difference of amplitudes between each procedures, and in the difference of latencies. For the complete recovery of amplitude and latency, it usually took average 5.65 minutes(0-20 min). In monitored group, only one patient required more than 20 minutes to recover and suffered from hearing disturbance after surgery. Others were recovered within 10 minutes without complications. However, 4 out of 12 patients who were not monitored showed hearing disturbance, and 1 patient had temporary facial palsy and dizziness(p=0.000). Conclusion : The results indicate that continuous intraoperative monitoring of BAEPs during CP angle surgery is seen mandatory procedure to prevent operative complications.

Minimal Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis in Proximal Humerus Fractures (상완골 근위부 골절에서의 최소 침습적 금속판 술식)

  • Purpose: In this study we introduced minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and analyzed clinical outcomes to determine the effectiveness of this intervention in proximal humerus fractures. Materials and Methods: We studied 27 patients including 16 cases with a 2-part fracture, 10 cases with a 3-part fracture, and 1 case with a 4-part fracture. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using UCLA score, KSS score and recovery of range of motion. Time to union and humerus neck-shaft angle change were estimated by radiologic assessment. The average follow up period was 19 months. Results: UCLA scores were "excellent" for 15 patients, "good" for 12 patients. The mean KSS score was 91.4 at final follow-up. The average shoulder range of motion was $167.2^{\circ}$ in forward elevation. Bone union occurred by 14.1 weeks postoperatively. Humerus neck-shaft angle recovery was "excellent" in 24 patients and "moderate" in 3 patients. There were no complications such as axillary nerve paralysis, deep infection, or subacromial impingement of the plate. Conclusion: MIPO for proximal humerus fractures is an effective procedure if performed with sufficient understanding of the anatomical structures. MIPO leads to minimized dissection of soft tissue, low complication rates and early recovery of range of motion.
