  • Optical-layer restoration has been demonstrated with a wavelength-blocker (WB) -based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM). Two $2{\times}2$ optical switches with a control circuit were placed before and after a WB-based ROADM to provide automatic path restoration under fiber-failure conditions. Using the proposed node configuration, a 3-node self-healing ring (SHR) network has been implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of the automatic optical-layer restoration. From the results, the restoration time was measured to be ~4 ms under fiber-failure conditions, without any additional power penalty in receiver sensitivity.

  • A compact square patch antenna with reconfigurable circular polarization (CP) at 2.4 GHz is proposed. Circular polarization is generated by an arc-shaped slot on the ground plane. In order to switch the CP orientation, the current flow direction of the patch is reconfigured via the PIN diodes mounted on the slot. As the slot and bias circuit are not placed on the patch side, the proposed antenna radiates a CP wave without alteration in the main beam direction. From the experimental results, the impedance and CP bandwidths of the proposed antenna have been demonstrated for up to 80 MHz and 25 MHz, respectively.

  • We propose a new formulation by quadratic boolean programming to partition circuits for FPGA based reconfigurable circuit boards, in which the routing topology among IC chips are predetermined. The formulation is to minimize the sum of the wire length by considering the nets passing through IC chips for the interconnections between chips which are not adjacent, in addition to the constraints considered by the previous partition methods. We also describe a heuristic method, which consist of module assignment method to efficiently solve the problem. Experimental results show that our method generates the partitions in which the given constraints are all satisfied for all the benchmark circuits tested. The pin utilization are reduced for the most of the circuits and the total wire length of the routed nets are improved up to 34.7% compared to the previous method.

  • In this paper, a reconfigurable polarization patch antenna that uses a Y-shaped feed is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a square patch, a Y-shaped feeding structure, a PIN diode, and a bias circuit for diode operation. The structural symmetry/asymmetry of the feeding structure is determined by the on/off operation of the PIN diode that inserted into the side of one of the lines of the Y-shaped feeding structure. For the proposed reconfigurable antenna, the two microstrip lines of the feeding structure have the same length when the PIN diode operates in the on state, and the antenna exhibits linear polarization(LP). On the other hand, when the PIN diode operates in the off state, the length of one side line of the feeding structure is relatively shorter than that of the other line. Therefore, the antenna exhibits circular polarization(CP). From the measurement results, it is found that the proposed antenna exhibits good impedance matching and axial ratio. In addition, polarization switching can be easily achieved in the same operating band.

  • This paper presents a low-power voltage converter based on a reconfigurable capacitor array. Its energy recycling capacitor array stores the energy during a charge stage and supplies the voltage during an energy recycle stage even after the power source is disconnected. The converter reconfigures the capacitor array step-wise to boost the lost voltage level during the energy recycle stage. Its energy saving is particularly effective when most of the energy remaining in the charge capacitors is wasted by the leakage current during a longer sleep period. Simulations have been conducted using a voltage source of 500 mV to supply a $V_{DD}$ of around 800 mV to a load circuit consisting of four 32-bit adders in a 65-nm CMOS process. Results demonstrate energy recycling efficiency of 85.86% and overall energy saving of 40.14% compared to a conventional converter, when the load circuit is shortly active followed by a long sleep period.

  • We have developed a fully functional reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) switch module using a polymer integrated photonic lightwave circuit technology. The polymer variable optical attenuator (VOA) array and digital optical switch array are integrated into one polymer PLC chip and packaged to form a 10-channel VOA integrated optical switch module. Four of these optical switch modules are used in the ROADM switch module to execute 40-channel switching and power equalization. As a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) filter device, two C-band 40-channel athermal arrayed waveguide grating WDMs are used in the ROADM module. Optical power monitoring of each channel is carried out using a 5% tap PD. A controller and firmware having the functions of a 40-channel switch and VOA control, optical power monitoring, as well as TEC temperature control, and data communication interfaces are also developed in this study.

  • We implemented double-negative metamaterials using cross-polarized split-ring resonators in a microstripline. The split-ring resonators comprised quad ring structures and were connected with the microstripline in series. Four different structures, with the shorted rings in varying locations, were fabricated to demonstrate reconfigurable band-pass characteristics. The effective permittivities and permeabilities were extracted using the Ziolkowski method. Excellent agreement between the developed circuit model and the measurement was observed up to 10 GHz.

  • A dual-band through-the-wall imaging radar receiver for a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar system was designed and fabricated. The operating frequency bands of the receiver are S-band (2-4 GHz) and X-band (8-12 GHz). If the target is behind a wall, wall-reflected waves are rejected by a reconfigurable $G_m-C$ high-pass filter. The filter is designed using a high-order admittance synthesis method, and consists of transconductor circuits and capacitors. The cutoff frequency of the filter can be tuned by changing the reference current. The receiver system is fabricated on a printed circuit board using commercial devices. Measurements show 44.3 dB gain and 3.7 dB noise figure for the S-band input, and 58 dB gain and 3.02 dB noise figure for the X-band input. The cutoff frequency of the filter can be tuned from 0.7 MHz to 2.4 MHz.

  • In this paper, a planar frequency reconfigurable antenna is proposed with variable capacitors. The proposed one is designed with a planar monopole, and varies resonant frequencies by variable capacitive loading of a varactor diode. The equivalent circuit and electromagnetic(EM) simulation are utilized for the analysis at the variable characteristic design of the antenna, and the same radiation performance. The implemented frequency variable monopole antenna has been verified by comparing prototypes with designed capacitors and ones with biased varactor diodes. The proposed antenna has presented the resonant frequency variations from 2.25 GHz to 2.42 GHz.
