Silica nanoparticles were synthesized with various silane coupling agents to make specific pathway of electrons and anti-recombination system when solidifying liquid electrolytes. In this study, we used an appropriate method of synthesis for activated silica nanoparticles and silane coupling agents with 3-(triethoxysilyl)propionitrile, Trimethoxy[3-(methylamino)propyl]silane, Triethoxyoctylsilane, and octadecyltrimethoxy silane. Dye-sensitized solar cells using solidified electrolytes with silica nanoparticles exhibit comparatively excellent efficiency, ranging from 2.3 to 7.0% under similar conditions.

The formation mechanism and photocatalytic properties of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/$TiO_2$-based nanotube (TNTs) composite are investigated. The CNT/TNT composite is synthesized via a solution chemical route. It is confirmed that this 1-D nanotube composite has a core-shell nanotubular structure, where the TNT surrounds the CNT core. The photocatalytic activity investigated based on the methylene blue degradation test is superior to that of with pure TNT. The CNTs play two important roles in enhancing the photocatalytic activity. One is to act as a template to form the core-shell structure while titanate nanosheets are converted into nanotubes. The other is to act as an electron reservoir that facilitates charge separation and electron transfer from the TNT, thus decreasing the electron-hole recombination efficiency.
The application of recombinant DNA technology has been remarkable and nearly replaced commonly used traditional methods. Traditional industrial microbiology long depended on the discovery of valuable strains and mutagenesis of such strains to improve its secretion capacity of enzymes and secondary metabolites on the industrial scale. Commodities included industrial enzymes and biopharmaceuticals. The purpose of genome manipulation by the crossing of different strains or genetic recombination of naked DNA to the genome is of increased production of valuable metabolites. We optimized a transformation method to either for removal of innate genes, introduction of heterologous genes, or combination of both. We have been used selected whole or partial genes to manipulate target fungi toward the development of strains overproducing invaluable proteins. We have also used the whole genome sequence information of fungal genomes in public databases and functional genomics approach to select genes to manipulate and eventually contributing greatly to the development of overproducing industrial strains overproducing proteins or secondary metabolites. I will briefly review 1) filamentous fungi as a host for production of recombinant proteins and secondary metabolites, 2) markets of industrial metabolites, 3) a new approach to manipulate up to five genes at the same time in the system that ProxEnrem uses.
The effect of additives in an electrolyte solution on the conversion efficiency of a dye sensitized solar cell was investigated. A density functional theory (DFT) method was used to examine the physical and chemical properties of nitrogen-containing additives adsorbed on a $TiO_2$ surface. Our results show that additives which cause lower partial charges, higher Fermi level shifts, and greater adsorption energies tend to improve the performance of DSSCs. Steric effects that prevent energy losses due to electron recombination were also found to have a positive effect on the conversion efficiency. In this work, 3-amino-5-methylthio-1H-1,2,4-triazole (AMT) has been suggested as a better additive than the most popular additive, TBP, and verified with experiments.
The phosphor $CaTiO_3:Pr^{3+}$ attracts much attention as a low-voltage red phosphor because of its good chromaticity and intrinsic conductivity. The addition of Ga into this CaTiO₃:Pr led the luminance intensity to greatly enhance without the change of the wavelength for the electronic transition and the peak shape of it. The increase of the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs through the Ga ion doping, which was expected to play a role of a hole-trap center, is proposed to be one of the reasons for the enhancement of the cathodoluminescence intensity.
The double sided buried contact(DSBC)silicon solar cell processing requires doping of the rear and front grooves with boron and phosphorus respectively. The successful electroless plating of these grooves with the appropriate metals haave been found to depend on the boron conditions for the rear fingers. However, an increased understanding of electroless plating has removed this restriction. Thus the DSBC cells using different boron conditions can be electrolessly plated with ease. This paper presents the recent work done on metallizing the double sided buried contact silicon solar cells with heavily doped boron grooves. The cells results indicate that, the heavier the boron grooves, the poorer the cell performance because of the probable higher metal contact recombination associated with boron grooves.
Novel food materials can be produced based on biotechnology such as genetic recombination, microbial fermentation, and enzymatic engineering by utilizing living organisms such as animal, plant, and microorganism or by applying the enzymes isolated from them. Especially, exploration and development of novel prebiotics and probiotics attracted great attention worldwide in the food industry, of which the research and industrial trends in food biotechnology field are promoting the production of next generation sweeteners and proliferation of beneficial bacteria in gastrointestinal tract. Development and commercialization of novel food materials by domestic bioprocessing technology have been sluggish due to the GMO/LMO food safety issues. Meanwhile, the US and EU do not perceive badly about gene manipulation technology, and the research is most active in the fields of crops and GMMs, respectively. Genetic scissors, which are considered as next generation technology, are notable since foreign genes do not remain in final products.

With AKARI, we carried out near-infrared spectroscopy of the nearby barred spiral galaxy, NGC 1097, categorized as Seyfert 1 with a circumnuclear starburst ring. Our observations mapped the galactic center region. As a result, we obtain the spatial distributions of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon $3.3{\mu}m$ and the aliphatic hydrocarbon $3.4-3.6{\mu}m$ emission. The former is detected from all the observed regions and the latter is enhanced near the bar connecting the ring with the nucleus. In addition, we detect absorption features due to $H_2O$ ice and CO/SiO at the ring and the galactic center, while we detect the hydrogen recombination line $Br{\alpha}$ only from the ring. Hence the observed spectra change dramatically within the central 1 kpc region.
Sphingomonas chlorophenolica ATCC39723 was successfully labeled with the gfp (green fluorescent protein) gene inserted into the pcpB gene by homologous recombination. As the gfp recombinant was easily distinguished from other indigenous organisms, the population of gfp recombinant was monitored after being released into the soil microcosms. Their population density dropped from 10$\^$8/ to 10$\^$6/ (cfu/$m\ell$) in the non-sterilized soil microcosms during the first 6 days. Moreover, the gfp recombinant was not detected even at lower dilution rates after a certain time period. The recombinant, however, survived for at least 28 days in the sterilized soil microcosms. Although the gfp recombinant did not degrade pentachlorophenol (PCP), this experiment showed the possibility of using gfp as a monitoring reporter system for S. chlorophenolica ATCC39723 and potentially other species of Sphingomonas.

Thymocyte-specific transcriptional regulatory systems can be used to better understand the relationship between transcription and V(D)J recombination during early T cell development. In this study, we generated transgenic mice expressing the transactivator Gal4-VP16 or the Gal4 DNA binding domain (Gal4-DBD) under the control of the lck proximal promoter, which is only active in immature thymocytes. From these studies Gal4-VP16 and Gal4-DBD expression was shown to significantly alter thymic cellularity and differentiation without significantly changing the $CD3^+$ thymocyte distribution. Furthermore, the presence of Gal4-VP16 or Gal4-DBD in the transgenic thymocytes retarded the mobility of the Gal4 DNA binding motif as determined by a gel mobility shift assay, suggesting that the developmental alteration did not affect the functional property of the transgenic proteins. These results indicated that lck promoter-driven Gal4-VP16 or Gal4-DBD expression did not affect $CD3^+$ mature thymocytes, thus this system can be applied to study transcriptional regulation of transresponder genes in bigenic mouse model thymocytes.
