Recently, the intensity and frequency of typhoons have been on the increase due to unusual weather phenomena and climate change. In particular, on September 13, 2003, typhoon MAEMI (0314) caused heavy damage in the provinces of Busan and Gyongnam, but also provided an opportunity to perform a variety of studies on storm surge. According to investigation reports on the damage resulting from typhoon MAEMI, the areas where coastal inundation occurred were located in reclaimed land under coastal development. In this study, through an image data analysis of historic and present day typhoons affecting Masan, we found that the inundation damage areas corresponded to reclaimed lands. Therefore, using the area around Busan, including the southeastern coast of Korea where typhoons lead to an increased storm surge risk, we performed a storm surge/inundation simulation, and examined the inundation effect on reclaimed land due to the intensified typhoons predicted for the future by climate change scenarios.
The fractions of nitrogen were investigated in the soils of reclaimed and natural tidelands of southwest coastal area of Korea. The content of total-N varied to ranged form 619 to 5,534 mg/kg dry weight with a mean value of 1,857 mg/kg. The order of different fractions of nitrogen was as follows: Acid non-extractable-N > uncounted-N > acid extractable-N > ammonia-N > nitrate-N. The content of ammonia-N, acid extractable-N, and acid non-extractable-N showed highly negative correlations with pH. The content of acid extractable-N and ammonia-N showed highly positive correlation with clay content.
The chemical fractions of phosphorus were investigated in the soils of reclaimed and natural tidelands of southwest coastal area of Korea. The content of total-P varied to ranged from 322 to 614 mg/kg dry weight with a mean value of 467 mg/kg. The order of different fractions of phosphorus in reclaimed tideland soils was as follows: 1) inorganic phosphorus: Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P > reductant soluble Fe-P. 2) organic phosphorus: Inositol-P > nucleic acid-P > phospholipid-P. The content of Al-P showed negative correlation with organic matter content but showed positive correlation with pH. The content of Fe-P showed negative correlation with clay mineral content but showed positive correlation with organic matter content. Reductant soluble Fe-P and Ca-P were no correlation with soil properties. The content of inositol-P showed highly positive correlation with clay mineral, organic matter content, and CEC.
Design parameters related to Yano's method(1984, 1985), one of experimental approaches having been used widely in Korea to estimate sedimentation and consolidation of dredged and reclaimed ground, were analyzed and their propriety were reassessed in this paper. Data analyses were performed on the basis of the settling test results using samples from the west coastal area of Korea. From analysis of results, for specific characteristics of these dredged and reclaimed marine soft clays, co-relations of initial water content - coefficient of sedimentation/ consolidation - initial setting velocity were evaluated. Relation between height of soil solid and surface height of slurry at the stages of initiation and termination of consolidation was also assessed. Finally ranges and average values of these design parameters were evaluated and typical empirical equations between these design parameters were also proposed.
A study on fugitive dust dispersion was conducted at Saemanguem reclaimed area located at the west coastal area of Jeon-buk Province Total reclaimed area is 40,100ha developed by building a 33km long sea dike through Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan. (Land: 28,300ha, Fresh Water Lake: 11,800ha) After this area was completely reclaimed in 2006, there has been high possibility of dust generation and dispersion to the neighboring area. The dust generated at the reclaimed land was composed mainly of minerals with high salinity, and it could make harmful effect on crop production as well on to human's health such as eye irritation and respiratory disease. Especially, when those aerosol particles are reached on the leaves of farm crops, the photosynthesis and respiration of the plants can be under restraint resulting in the decrease of agricultural productivity of the nearby farm areas. Furthermore, highly concentrated salty particles can directly damage the leaf cells. In this study, field experiment has been conducted to regularly measure the locally suspended dust particles and analyze how they were dispersed to the neighboring areas. The collected dust particles were analyzed to examine theirs sizes, concentrations, and components. The SPSS statistical program was also used to separate the dust concentration generated by the reclaimed land from the total dust concentration measured at the measuring locations.
The chemical fractions of heavy metals were investigated in the soils of reclaimed and natural tidelands of southwest coastal area of Korea. The distribution pattern of each heavy metal in different fractions was in the order: 1) Cu : organic bound > organic complex > residual > exchangeable = water soluble. 2) Cr : residual > organic bound > organic complex > water soluble > exchangeable. 3) Pb : organic bound > residual > organic complex > water soluble > exchangeable. 4) Cd residual > organic bound > organic complex > water soluble = exchangeable. 5) Zn : organic bound > residual > organic complex > water soluble > exchangeable. The content of residual Zn showed positive correlation with organic matter content but organic bound Zn showed negative correlation with CEC. The content of residual and exchangeable Cd showed highly positive correlation with organic matter content but residual, organic bound, and exchangeable Cd showed negative correlations with CEC. Water soluble Pb showed positive correlation with CEC but organic bound Pb showed negative correlation with CEC.
A aggregate size distribution is an important in successful crop production in reclaimed tidelands. The aggregate size distribution for this study were determined of 0.1mm, 0.5mm, 1.0mm, and 2.0mm by wet sieving method. Agricultural activity, period of reclamation showed significant effects on aggregate size distribution in reclaimed tidelands. The percentage of <2mm aggregates for SMG, GHD, and SM reclaimed tidelands were ranged 8.9, 36.7, and 38.0%, respectively. The percentage of >0.1mm aggregates for SMG, GHD, and SM reclaimed tidelands were ranged 9.0, 26.0, and 48.9%, respectively.
Coastal reclamation has created large flat lands, part of which is an attractive site to construct greenhouse complexes for the horticulture industry. Wind environments over these coastal lands are entirely different from those of the inland area, and demand increased structural safety. The objective of this study is to evaluate the structural safety of two single-span greenhouses, peach type and even-span type, under the wind characteristics of coastal reclaimed lands. The wind pressure coefficients acting on the walls and roofs of two greenhouses were measured by wind tunnel experiments, and those acting on the roofs were approximately two times larger than those suggested by the existing design guidelines. Consequently, structural analysis conducted by SAP2000 showed that greenhouse structures designed by the existing guidelines might lead to structural failure under coastal wind conditions because their maximum allowable wind speeds were lower than the design wind speed. Especially, the peach type greenhouse constructed in a reclaimed land could be damaged by approximately 48 % of the design wind speed and needed improvement of structural designs. This study suggested increasing the spacing of rafters with thicker pipes for the peach type greenhouse to enhance economic feasibility of the building under strong wind conditions of reclaimed lands.
A aggregate size distribution of soils is an important in successful crop production in reclaimed tidelands. The aggregate size distribution for this study were determined of 0.1mm, 0.25mm, 0.5mm, 1.0mm, and 2.0mm by wet sieving method. Agricultural activity, period of reclamation showed significant effects on aggregate size distribution in reclaimed tidelands. Aggregate MWD was greater in SS and KH(above 1.0m) than in YSG, GHD, SMG, and DH(below 0.5mm) reclaimed tidelands and tidelands. The percentage of aggregates less than < 2mm for SMG, GHD, and SM reclaimed tidelands and tidelands were ranged 8.9%, 36.7%, and 38.0%, respectively. The percentage of > 0.1mm aggregates for SMG, GHD, and SM reclaimed tidelands were ranged 9.0%, 26.0%, and 48.9%, respectively. Results indicated that aggregate size distribution of reclaimed tidelands and tidelands under various agricultural systems vary with reclamation period and soil type.
