• Current expertise in air-water turbulent flows on stepped chutes is limited to laboratory experiments at low to moderate Reynolds numbers on flat horizontal steps. In this study, highly turbulent air-water flows skimming down a large-size stepped chute were systematically investigated with a $22^{\circ}$ slope (Fig. 1). Turbulence manipulation was conducted using vanes or longitudinal ribs to enhance interactions between skimming flows and cavity recirculating regions (Fig. 2). Systematic experiments were performed with seven configurations. The results demonstrated the strong influence of vanes on the air-water flow. An increase in flow resistance was observed consistently with maximum flow resistance achieved with vanes placed in a zigzag pattern.

  • The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated in a streamwise meridian plane using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5,300 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel at Re=7,400. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. In addition, the mean flow pattern extracted by particle tracing method in water tunnel at Re= 14,500 reveals two distinct comparable toroidal(not closed) vortices in the recirculation region. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique demonstrates the detailed wake configuration of close symmetric recirculation and near-wake configuration with two toroidal vortices, reversed velocity zone and vorticity contours.

  • The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on unstructured adaptive meshes. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies include boattailing, base bleed, base comustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, the charateristics of turbulence flow have been studied for geomeries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by number, length and height of step. The flow over multistep afterbodies has been analyzed including expansion waves, recompression waves, recirculating flow, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental datum.

  • A computational study has been performed to determine the effects of divergent trailing edge (DTE) modification to a supercritical airfoil in transonic flow field. For this, the computational result with the original DLBA 186 supercritical airfoil was compared to that of the modified DLBA 283. A wavier-Stokes code, Fluent 5. 1, was used with Spalart-Allmaras's one-equation turbulence model. Results in this study showed that the reduction in drag due to the DTE modification is associated with weakened shock and delayed shock appearance. The decrease in drag due to the DTE modification is greater than the increase in base drag. The effect of the recirculating flow region on lift increase was also observed. An airfoil with DTE modification achieved the same lift coefficient at a lower angle of attack while giving a lower drag coefficient. Thus, the lift-to-drag ratio increases in transonic flow conditions compared to the original airfoil. The lift coefficient increases considerably whereas the lift slope increases just a little due to DTE modification.

  • The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence models by Launder et al.(1977, LPS) and Leschziner and Rodi(1981, LR) are modified to account for the secondary straining effect with having a generality in the present paper. The modified models are obtained by replacing the gradient Richardson number used to account for the secondary straining effect in the original models by a new parameter with a tensor-invariant correction form. These two modified models are used to predict the turbulent flow over a backward-facing step. In contrast to both standard and modified LR models, the modified LPS model is found to predict the reattachment point fairy well, as well as mean velocity, wall static pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in the recirculating region.

  • In order to improve the performance of cross-flow hydro turbine, detailed examination of the effect of the turbine configuration on the performance is needed necessarily. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the effect of blade angle on the performance of the cross-flow hydro turbine. Analysis of the turbine performance with the variation of the blade angle has been made by using a commercial CFD code. The results show that inlet and outlet angles of runner blade give considerable effect on the performance of the turbine. Pressure on the surface of the runner blade changes remarkably by the blade angle both at the Stages 1 and 2. Moreover, relatively small blade inlet angle is effective to produce higher value of output power. Recirculating flow in the runner passage causes remarkable hydraulic loss.

  • Three-dimensional flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor were investigated using the PIV method. The combustor has two rectangular inlets that loin a 90-degree angle each other. Three cases of test combustors are made in which those inlet angles are 30 degree, 45degree and 60 degree. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number as Mach 0.3 at the inlet. PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. Accuracy of the developed PIV program was verified with a rotating disk experiment and standard data. The characteristics of the internal flows of the combustor are large swirling flows which appear symmetric with respect to the symmetric section. This is attributed to the fact that the flows introduced from the right and left intakes collide with each other, thus forming symmetrically large vortices. A large and complex three-dimensional recirculating flow was measured behind the intakes. An inlet angle of 30 degrees is the most suitable angle as a frame he]der in the performed experimental ranges.

  • A numerical investigation on the turbulent flows over a three-dimensional steep hill is presented. The numerical model developed for the present work is based on the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm with a non-staggered grid system. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and Shih's non-linear model are tested for the validation of the prediction accuracy in the 3D separated flow. Comparisons of the mean velocity and turbulence profiles between the numerical predictions and the measurements show good agreement. The Shih's non-linear model is found to predict mean flow and turbulence better than the Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$. Flow patterns have also been examined to explain the difference in the cavity zone between 2D and 3D hills.

  • The conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been implemented in context with the unstructured-grid finite-volume method which efficiently handle the physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. The validation cases include a turbulent nonpremixed $CO/H_2/N_2$ Jet flame and a turbulent nonpremixed $H_2/CO$ flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. In terms of mean flame field, minor species and NO formation, numerical results has the overall agreement with expermental data. The detailed discussion has been made for the turbulence-chemistry interaction and NOx formation characteristics as well as the comparative performance for CMC and flamelet model.
