A high altitude long endurance aircraft which carries out missions of environmental research communication relay or ground surveillance, should have the capacity to cruise in the stratosphere at a relatively low speed for a long dwell time without the necessity of refueling. When one considers the propulsion system for such an aircraft, a reciprocating engine with a serial turbo-charger system to boost rarefied ambient air up to sea level condition, would represent an good, informed and practical choice regardless of the cruising altitude of the aircraft. In this paper, high altitude long endurance aircraft developed by overseas research groups and research trends, regarding multi-stage turbocharger systems, are introduced.

The industrial revolution in England was based on the manufacturing systems by the power of water mill and rapidly progressed by the innovation of steam engine. It is no exaggeration to say that today's civilization is realized by the development of various types of power machinery, namely fluid machinery and heat engine. The electric energy is converted mainly from thermal energy (mainly steam) of mineral oil, coal and nuclear fuel through generator connected with steam turbine which is a kind of power machinery. There are various types of power machinery as shown in Tables 1a and 1b. They are classified into two types by use. One is absorption type of fluid and/or thermal energy, for examples, windmill and heat engine. The other is provision type of the energies for examples, pump, compressor and propulsion. By flow type, they are also classified by two types, turbo type and positive-displacement type. The turbo type began from water mill and windmill and evolve to steam turbine and finally to gas turbine. The positive-displacement type started from reciprocating water pump and developed into steam engine and changed to reciprocating combustion engine. The pumps and motors used in oil hydraulic system for power control are also positive-displacement type.

Intercoolers for multi-stage turbocharger of the hydrogen reciprocating engine for HALE UAV are installed for reducing the charged air inlet temperature of the engine. The intercooler is air to air, cross flow, plate-fin type and the fin configuration is offset-strip fin which is referenced from the heat exchanger of the ERAST. Most of HALE UAV's cruising altitude is 60,000 ft and the density of air for this altitude is very low compared to sea level. Therefore the required heat transfer area for the HALE UAV is about three-times bigger than the sea level. Consequently, it is essential to design to meet the required efficiency of intercooler in the range of not excessively growing the weight of the heat exchanger. The quasi-one dimensional heat transfer design/analysis for satisfying the requirement of the engine are written in this paper. The numerical analyses for estimating the coolant flow rate of the engine bay and pressure loss in the header and core are also summarized.

A multi-stage reciprocating air compressor has many pistons and conneting rods to one crank throw, while a general engine has one connecting rod. Those make its design hard to apply balance weight design method generally using in an engine design, This study introduces a modified balance weight design method in order to calculate the unbalanced inertia properly. Vibration tests on V/W type air compressor have been conducted to prove the usefulness of design program. It is confirmed that the proposed program is applicable to design of balance weight.

Applicability of the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model to the analysis of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow of a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on non-orthogonal including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on a non-orthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components are used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The predicted results using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model of the unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow within a cylinder of reciprocating model engine including port/valve assembly are compared to these from the modified k-$\varepsilon$ model and experimental data. Using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model seems the have some potential for the simulations of the unsteady turbulent flow within a port/valve-cylinder assembly over the modified k-$\varepsilon$model.

In this study, It is necessary that we should study on more effective use about reciprocating engines because there are huge increase of air pollution. Diesel Engine is operated by injecting fuel directly to combustion chamber with high pressure. Diesel Engine has greater thermal efficiency and durability than Gasoline Engine. Also, Diesel Engine emitted low harmful exhaust witch caused by Gasoline Engine. There are many ways to improve of performance and decrease of harmful exhaust by controlling injection timing, changing amount of fuel and engine speed and so on. Especially, development and application of common rail direct injection Engine cause the increase of thermal efficiency by controlling a various of operating conditions. In this study we analyze characteristics of performance by changing a various of operating conditions.
In this paper, a computer simulation method for dynamic analysis of the hydraulic engine mount system is proposed. The hydraulic engine mount system controls the damping characteristics using the viscosity of fluid flow The complex stiffness of the main rubber of the hydraulic engine mount system is computed by finite element analysis for the viscoelastic materials and hydro-static elements. A numerical analysis method is presented to solve nonlinear equations of the hydraulic engine mount system. which is composed of an engine mass, fluid in inertia track and a vertical inertia force of reciprocating mass in the engine. Also. dynamic properties of the hydraulic engine mount system are analyzed in the frequency domain. Effects of the hydraulic engine mount system running over the rough road are investigated using a vehicle dynamic model. These results are compared with those of the rubber mount system.

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate characteristic variation of diluted engine oil by diesel fuel and its effects on engine components. Especially, engine oil was made to have $15\%$ fuel content. To predict existing diesel fuel content in engine oil after test was used the viscosity calibration curve. About $54\%$ percent of diesel fuel in diluted engine oil was distillated by various paths related to reciprocating motion of piston and the rest diesel fuel plays an important role for decreasing engine oil viscosity. Test results show that lowered engine ell viscosity by diesel fuel dilution become a reason of increasing engine elements wear, Therefore, this caused the quantity of blow-by gas to increase and main gallery pressure to decrease.

A 150 m$\^$3//hr, 30 kg/cm$\^$2/, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines of ships. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially a volumetric efficiency of 80%. Temperature and stress analysis of the 1st stage cylinder are performed using axisymmetric FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the 1st stage valve seat caused by valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system tribological design issues are reviewed and good design practices are suggested. Finally, forced-air pin-type interstage coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage.
