  • According to the needs of change to hybrid, fuel cell and electric vehicle, and to the increasing demand for safety and eco-friendliness, the necessity of Electro-Mechanical Brake(EMB) is being increased. But, one of the most important problems for realizing EMB to the practical use is that the required motor power for braking is too high. So the high braking efficient EMB is required. In recent years, the Electronic Wedge Brake(EWB) is noticeable for the high braking efficiency. In this research, we examine the improvable matter of the recent published EWB, and we propose the improved mechanism and the cost effective control method using this mechanism. And we test these feasibility by experiment and discuss these meaning and effect.

  • In tissue engineering, scaffolds play an important role in the growth of cells to 3-D organs or tissues. For the success of tissue engineering, they should be mimicked to meet the requirements of natural extracellular matrix (ECM) in the body, such as mechanical properties, adhesiveness, porosity, biodegradability, and growth factor release, etc. Contrary to other materials, polymeric materials are adequate to engineer scaffolds for tissue engineering because controlling the structure and the ratio of components and designing various shapes and size are possible. In this review, the importance, major characteristics, processes, and recent examples of polymeric scaffolds for tissue engineering applications are discussed.

  • Object detection is a challenging field in the visual understanding research area, detecting objects in visual scenes, and the location of such objects. It has recently been applied in various fields such as autonomous driving, image surveillance, and face recognition. In traditional methods of object detection, handcrafted features have been designed for overcoming various visual environments; however, they have a trade-off issue between accuracy and computational efficiency. Deep learning is a revolutionary paradigm in the machine-learning field. In addition, because deep-learning-based methods, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have outperformed conventional methods in terms of object detection, they have been studied in recent years. In this article, we provide a brief descriptive summary of several recent deep-learning methods for object detection and deep learning architectures. We also compare the performance of these methods and present a research guide of the object detection field.

  • Periodontitis is a common oral disease that is characterized by infection and inflammation of the tooth supporting tissues. While its incidence is highly associated with outgrowth of the pathogenic microbiome, some patients show signs of predisposition and quickly fall into recurrence after treatment. Recent research using genetic associations of candidates as well as genome-wide analysis highlights that variations in genes related to the inflammatory response are associated with an increased risk of periodontitis. Intriguingly, some of the genes are regulated by epigenetic modifications, supposedly established and reprogrammed in response to environmental stimuli. In addition, the treatment with epigenetic drugs improves treatment of periodontitis in a mouse model. In this review, we highlight some of the recent progress identifying genetic factors associated with periodontitis and point to promising approaches in epigenetic research that may contribute to the understanding of molecular mechanisms involving different responses in individuals and the early detection of predispositions that may guide in future oral treatment and disease prevention.

  • The serine/threonine kinase Akt has been intensely studied for its role in growth factor-mediated cell survival for the past 5 years. On the other hand, the ongoing research effort has recently uncovered novel regulatory mechanisms and downstream effectors of Akt that demonstrate the involvement of Akt in other cellular functions such as cell cycle progression, angiogenesis, and cancer cell invasion/metastasis. Furthermore, recent studies using whole model organisms suggest additional roles for Akt in important diseases such as aging and diabetes. The following review addresses these recent advances in the understanding of Akt function.

  • Polybenzimidazole (PBI), an engineering polymer with well-known excellent thermal, chemical and mechanical stabilities has been recognized as an alternative to high temperature polymer electrolyte membranes (HT-PEMs). This review focuses on recent advances made on the development of PBI-based HT-PEMs for fuel cell applications. PBI-based membranes discussed were prepared by various strategies such as structural modification, cross-linking, blending and organic-inorganic composites. In addition, intriguing properties of the PBI-based membranes as well as their fuel cell performances were highligted.

  • The recent introduction of the systems biology or systems medicine opens a new horizon in the field of traditional oriental medicine research. Until now many recent researches of traditional medicine have been conducted based upon reductionist approach, but traditional medicine should be treated by a holistic approach. In this short review, I outlined usefulness of systems approach in medicine and proposed a potential application area of traditional medicine research.

  • The construction or enlargement of the power facilities requires the compactness of them, and the development of power system amenities because of some reasons; the shortness of a site for power facilities, social request of the harmony of them with surroundings, and so on. For the insulator in this area, the research and development of polymer or composite insulator or its applications have been increased rapidly in some advanced countries, but the activities of our country are being in a weak step although our concern has been gradually enlarged about it in recent years. Thus, in this paper, we intend to introduce the trend of research and development of it in the inside and outside of the country.

  • In recent years, it becomes a worldwide trend that the power utilities focus their attention to the automation of their power plants and distribution systems, employing recent developed communication technologies. Following this trend, KEPCO has installed optical communication links along its power distribution lines and at the same time, has exhausted much efforts to implement its own Distribution Automation Systems(DAS) in possible early date. This paper presents some of initial design efforts toward KEPCO's DAS at KEPRI.
