  • The use of GPS receiver at outer space becomes common in low earth orbit. Recently most of satellites use GPS receiver as navigation solution for finding satellite position. However, the accuracy of navigation solution acquiring directly from GPS receiver is not enough in satellite application such as map generation. Post-processing concepts such as Precise Orbit Determination (POD) are recently applied to satellite data processing to improve satellite position accuracy. The POD uses raw measurement data instead of navigation solution of GPS receiver. The performance of raw measurement data depends on raw measurement data accuracy and tracking loop algorithm of GPS receiver. In this paper, a method for evaluating performance of raw measurement data is suggested. Test environment and procedure of the low earth orbit satellite acquiring for navigation solution of GPS receiver and navigation solution of POD are described. In addition, accuracy on navigation solution of GPS receiver, raw measurement data, and navigation solution of POD are analyzed. The proposed method can be applicable to general low earth orbit satellite.

A GPS Receiver Structure for Multi-beamforming (다중 빔 형성을 위한 GPS 수신기 구조)

  • GPS receivers can be disrupted by intentional or unintentional jamming, then it is unable to receive GPS signals and it is impossible to get the correct navigation results. Anti-jamming schemes using array antennas are being studied well due to high performance of those, and the efforts to apply them to GPS receiver are also being done. A GPS receiver structure for a multiple beam-forming scheme among those schemes has been proposed in this paper, and the performance is also compared with that using a general GPS receiver structure. For a general GPS receiver structure, each satellite signal which is formed by a beam-forming scheme is summed to be processed in a part of digital signal processing. For a proposed GPS receiver structure, however, each satellite signal is respectively processed by a designated channel in a part of digital signal processing. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed GPS receiver structure is superior to a general GPS receiver structure in a point of the carrier to noise power ratio and the navigation accuracy using a software platform.

Performance of Optimum and Suboptimum Rake Receivers in the Presence of Impulsive Noise (충격성 잡음에서 최적 갈퀴수신기와 준최적 갈퀴수신기의 성능)

  • In this paper, the optimum maximum-likelihood rake receiver for impulsive, fading channel is derived, and a sub-optimun rake receiver with reduced complexity is obtained for practical purposes. Numerical results show that, when the noise is impulsive, the rake receivers designed for impulsive noise offer performance improvement over those optimized for Gaussian environment. It is also observed that, as the number of fingers increases, the performance of the rake receivers designed for impulsive environment improves while the rake receiver optimized for Gaussian environment experiences performance degradation in impulsive environment.

  • In this paper, a new soft-fusion approach for multiple-receiver wireless communication systems is proposed. In the proposed approach, each individual receiver provides the central receiver with a confidence level rather than a binary decision. The confidence levels associated with the local receiver are modeled by means of soft-membership functions. The proposed approach can be applied to wireless digital communication systems, such as amplitude shift keying, frequency shift keying, phase shift keying, multi-carrier code division multiple access, and multiple inputs multiple outputs sensor networks. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated and compared to the performance of the optimal diversity, majority voting, optimal partial decision, and selection diversity in case of binary noncoherent frequency shift keying on a Rayleigh faded additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is shown that the proposed approach achieves considerable performance improvement over optimal partial decision, majority voting, and selection diversity. It is also shown that the proposed approach achieves a performance comparable to the optimal diversity scheme.

Performance Improvement Techniques for a DS-UWB System (DS-UWB 시스템의 성능 향상 기법)

  • In this paper, a new receiver with low complexity for a DS-UWB system which can eliminate efficiently the multiple access interference and the detrimental effects caused by multi-paths is proposed. The performance of conventional DS-UWB receivers depends greatly on the types and lengths of spreading codes. Generally, as the length of spreading codes increases, the receiver performance improves. But, the receiver performance does not improve satisfactorily in a multi-paths fading environment. Through computer simulations, it can be shown that the proposed DS-UWB receiver eliminate the multi-paths effects efficiently in a multi-user, multi-paths fading environment, and the user capacity can be increased dramatically using the proposed receiver.

  • In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system (OFDM), rapid channel variation caused by fast moving receiver leads to a loss of subcarrier orthogonality which results in inter-carrier interference (ICI) and receiver performance degradation. In conventional receivers, performance is enhanced by estimating ICI and removing it from received signals. In this paper, an ICI reduction scheme using a time-domain mask and adding is proposed. The proposed scheme is applied to DVB-T receiver to prove the Doppler mobile performance enhancement.

  • In this paper we propose a new structure of the long code MMSE receiver with pilot channel, which maintians excellent symbol detection capability even in the presence of Rayleigh fading. We explain analytically how the stability of the receiver weight vector, which is critical to the system performance, can be achieved by compensating the error signal as well as received signal vector distorted by fading channel. Computer simulation shows while maintaining better performance than the conventional matched filter receiver, the proposed long code MMSE receiver can extend its period up to $16{\times}T_b$ in a fading environment.

  • This paper presents the implementation-tation of the real-time software GPS Receiver based on FFT and FLL assisted PLL tracking algorithm. The FFT(fast fourier transform) based GPS si-gnal acquisition scheme provides a fast TTFF(time to first fix) performance. The tracking based on FLL assisted PLL enables tracking of GPS signal in a high dynamic environment. The designed software GPS receiver uses the indexing method for generating replica carrier to reduce computation load. The performance of the implemented GPS receiver is evaluated using high-dynamic simulated data from a simulator and real static data.

Performance Analysis of Chained Amplifier Systems for Metropolitan Optical Network Applications

  • In this paper, theoretical analysis for metropolitan optical networks is performed. First, analytical optical SNR is derived assuming each node consists of an EDFA, an optical filter, an optical switch, and a VOA, and then the relationship between OSNR and BER is studied. In a metropolitan optical network, an optical signal can be dropped to deliver data, and we also studied the effect of drop loss on system performance. When the drop loss is relatively small, the receiver structure of the node can be treated as a preamplifier receiver which is widely used in long-haul systems. In that case, ASE noise from EDFAs is the dominant noise source in the receiver. However, system performance is relatively insensitive to OSNR when the drop loss is significant because of the noise sources in the receiver (thermal and shot noise).

  • In this paper, it is derived the system design parameters for the J-STD-018 of the PCS mobile station(MS) minimum performance using DS/CDMA analyzed the system performance due to the receiver components. The simulation shows the selectivity is -70.96dB at 1.25MHz frequency offset from the carrier frequency while the MS noise figure to satisfy J-STD-018 is 10dB and the input 3rd harmonics intercept point of the MS class I and MS class II-V is -9.5dBm and -14dBm respectively. When the interference power level at the receiver is small, the receiver has better performance as we increase the gain of LNA. However, when the interference level at the receiver is large, the receiver performance is decreased by the effect of the spurious. Thus, the effectiveness of LNA On/Off switching technique is proved as to reduce the effect of the spurious.
