  • Considering the localization estimation issue in mixed line-of-sight (LOS)/non-LOS(NLOS) environments based on received signal strength (RSS) measurements in wireless sensor networks, a grid-based correlation method based on the relationship between distance and RSS is proposed in this paper. The Maximum-Likelihood (ML) estimator is appended to further improve the localization accuracy. Furthermore, in order to reduce computation load and enhance performance, an improved recursively version with NLOS mitigation is also proposed. The most advantages of the proposed localization algorithm is that, it does not need any prior knowledge of the propagation model parameters and therefore does not need any offline calibration effort to calibrate the model parameters in harsh environments, which makes it more convenient for rapid implementation in practical applications. The simulation and experimental results evidence that the proposed localization algorithm exhibits good localization performance and flexibilities for different devices.

  • Mobile Sensor Vehicles, nodes of Mobile Sensor Network, are navigating for a specific, maybe unknown, region. For the precise usage of MSN, MSV has to be able to do localization by integrating information through communication by each other. In addition, MSV should be localized with various sensors equipped. In this research, we propose a set of techniques that improve accuracy using human mimic by combining and exploiting the existing techniques such as Dead-Reckoning, Computer Vision and Received Signal Strength Identification.

  • Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error is the most common and also a major source of errors in wireless location system. A novel weighting factor (NWF) method is presented in this paper, based on the RSS(Received Signal Strength) measurements, path loss model and Circular Disk of Scatterers Model (CDSM). The proposed positioning method effectively weighted the TOA distance measurements for each Base Station (BS). Simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently weighted the distance measurements and achieve higher localization accuracy than that of Linear Line of Position (LLOP) and Believable Factor Algorithm (BFA).

  • In this paper, we propose a method for a mobile robot to estimate a specific location of a service provision target using a beacon-tag for the purpose of providing location-based services (LBS) to users in an indoor environment. To estimate the location, the irregular characteristics and error factors of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) generated from the beacon are analyzed, and the distance conversion function is derived from the RSSI data extracted by applying a Gaussian filter. Then, the distance data converted from the plurality of beacons estimates an indoor location through a triangulation technique. After that, the improvement in the location estimation is analyzed by applying the temporal confidence reasoning technique. The possibility of providing a LBS of a mobile robot was confirmed through a location estimation experiment for a plurality of designated locations in an indoor environment.

  • This paper proposed indoor location recognition method based on RSSI (received signal strength indication) using the LVQ (Learning Vector Quantization) network. The LVQ inputs are the RSSI values measured by the fixed reference nodes and the output are the spatial sections. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed experiments, and then compared to the conventional triangularity measurement method.

  • After permission for utilization of TV white space by FCC, a lot of attentions are focused on spectrum sensing, and various spectrum sensing methods have been proposed. However, they do not consider real environment, thus they are hard to achieve the required performance. In this paper, we propose resolutions for the problem which could be occurred in implementation of spectrum sensing module and verify performance of the proposed methods with computer simulation. The first proposed method utilizes channel status information to separate received signal and spurious for reducing false alarm probability caused by system internal spurious. The another proposed scheme is subband normalization method to prevent miss detection caused by multiple narrow band signals with different received signal strength. The simulation results verify that we can prevent false alarm cause by spurious components with the proposed system internal spurious cognition. Moreover, the proposed subband normalization method shows that it could overcome performance degradation caused by received signal strength difference.

  • In this paper, we present a received signal strength (RSS) prediction model to timely Initiate link layer triggers for fast handoff in a wireless LAN system. Noting that the distance between a mobile terminal and an access point is not changed abruptly in a short time interval, an adaptive RSS predictor based on a stationary time series model is proposed. RSS data obtained from ns-2 simulations are used to identity the time series model and verify the predictability of the RSS data. The results suggest that an autoregressive process of order 1 (AR(1)) can be used to represent the measured RSSs in a short time interval and predict at least 1-step ahead RSS with a high confidence level.

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has a significant attraction throughout various industry sites, along with the development of wireless communication technologies. The typical applications of RFID include medical, logistics, and distribution, and, specially, it is effectively applied to non-contact environments, because it employs radio waves. Although, recently, construction cases of the RFID management systems for the inventory management of the construction materials have been increased, the related researches and experiments for the reused materials are not actively performed. In this paper, we propose the RFID system with the localization function for effectively managing the reuse of the construction materials, adding to the conventional inventory management system. The proposed system consists of a RFID reader unit and a receiver unit, and the location information of the material with the attached RFID tag is obtained by estimating the position of a RFID reader. The distance value for estimating the reader position is calculated using the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) value of Zigbee, and the performance evaluation of the proposed system is performed in the indoor space of $5m{\times}5m$.

  • In wireless sensor networks, one of most common location detection methods that do not require additional devices such as GPS and ultrasonic sensor, is the location detection method based on received signal strength. However, measured received signal strength will fluctuate over time mainly due to physical radio channel characteristics between nodes, which subsequently will cause errors to measured distance between nodes. Since these contaminated distance data are utilized to detect the location of unknown node, there will be accumulated errors in the location of unknown node. In order to overcome the limitation of the location detection method based on received signal strength, we propose a location scheme in which reliability information of distance data as well as distance data between nodes are utilized to estimate the location of unknown node. Through simulation, it is shown that the proposed scheme can accomplish 30% capacity improvement.

  • Key agreement is paramount in secure wireless communications. A promising approach to address key agreement schemes is to extract secure keys from channel characteristics. However, because channels lack randomness, it is difficult for wireless networks with stationary communicating terminals to generate robust keys. In this paper, we propose a Robust Secure Key Agreement (RSKA) scheme from Received Signal Strength (RSS) in stationary wireless networks. In order to mitigate the asymmetry in RSS measurements for communicating parties, the sender and receiver normalize RSS measurements and quantize them into q-bit sequences. They then reshape bit sequences into new l-bit sequences. These bit sequences work as key sources. Rather than extracting the key from the key sources directly, the sender randomly generates a bit sequence as a key and hides it in a promise. This is created from a polynomial constructed on the sender's key source and key. The receiver recovers the key by reconstructing a polynomial from its key source and the promise. Our analysis shows that the shared key generated by our proposed RSKA scheme has features of high randomness and a high bit rate compared to traditional RSS-based key agreement schemes.
