In this paper, separated flow characteristics is studied using the RANS(Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes) modeling. The analysis is performed for the NASA's hump configuration which is the combination of a flat plate and a hump. This configuration was used in NASA's flow control workshop and it was one of validation cases for RANS and LES simulations. The separation occurs at the 65% of model length where a slot is positioned for the flow control. No flow control case and steady suction case are studied using RANS modeling. The Spalart-Allmaras model and the SST(Shear Stress Transport) model are applied and their accuracy are compared. To correlate CFD analysis with experimental data, the optimal boundary condition was investigated and the effect of a cavity around the slot is studied for the no flow case.

Vortical structures in the near-wake region of a cubic obstacle are studied using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one of the plates. In the turbulent near-wake region of the flow, coherent structures such as hairpin vortices are found. Quasi-periodic behavior of the hairpin vortices is noticed; its dimensionless frequency at Re=1,000 is about 0.82 which is consistent with the result of Elavarasan of et al.'s experiment [Fluid Dyn. Research, 2000, 27] although their geometry is somewhat different from on. In the case of Re=3,500, the dimensionless frequency of the hairpin vortex is about 1.60. It is observed that the translating speed of the head of the hairpin vortex is lower than the streamwise mean velocity at that location. In the vicinity of the lower plate downstream of the cube, various length scales are identified thus less coherent. However, it is noticed that the vortical structures become gradually elongated downstream of the new reattachment.

An experimental study was made of a large-scale vortical structure over a backward-facing step. The Reynolds number based on the step height was R $e_{H}$ =33,000. To recognize the large-scale vortex, three components of velocity were measured. The measurements were performed in the recirculation zone (x/H=4.0) and the reattachment zone(x/H=7.5). To measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a turbulent flow over a backward-facing step, a 32-channel microphone array was installed beneath the wall in the streamwise and spanwise directions. From the measured pressure field, the size of large-scale vortex was obtained. As a detailed study, a conditionally-averaging technique was employed to characterize the coherent structure of the large-scale vortex. To see the relationship between the flow field and the relevant spatial mode of the pressure field, the spatial box filtering (SBF) was examined. A cross-correlation between velocity and pressure fluctuations was performed to identify the structure and the length scale of the large-scale vortex.x.

Cylindrical chokes are used widely as components of hydraulic equipments. The dynamic characteristics between flowrate and pressure drop through the cylindrical chokes were discussed by the frequency characteristics of the chokes. It was assumed no pressure recovery occurred near the downstream of the choke. The pulsating jetflow from the outlet of cylindrical chokes show very complex behaviours which are quite different from the steady jet flow but it's not clarified quantitatively. In order to utilize the chokes as a flowmeter, it is indispensable to discuss the estimation of the dynamics of pressure drop in the downstream jetflow region of cylindrical chokes. In this experimental study, it is clarified that the reattachment length depended on pressure wave is compared with it depended on velocity wave. A pulsating flow is verified by visualization method. In the present study, the flow characteristic variables of laminar pulsating flow are investigated analytically and experimentally in a circular pipe. Characteristic parameters of the ratios of inertia(.PHI.$_{t,1}$) and viscous(.PHI.$_{z,1}$) term to pressure term are introduced to describe the flow pattern of laminar pulsating flow. flow.low.

The flame stabilization is one of the topics which have to be solved for the airbreathing propulsion systems, using the entering air which is supersonic velocity as an oxygen sources. Making a recirculation zone with an eddy flow, installed the reducing velocity devices such as the bluff body, is the typical method of the flame stabilization. Recently using a cavity flame stabilization at the wall is an emerging technique as an effective method which extends the stabilization zone, and the related research papers have been published on the flow separation and reattachment, pressures and oscillations including length/depth ratios in the cavities. Even though, still there are lots of topics to study more in the cavity flame stabilization field as the preceding techniques, as well as the research and the development of the airbreathing propulsion system itself.

Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670 mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer($\delta$=270 mm) was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section floor with fairly long developing length(18 m). The thin boundary layer($\delta$=36.5 mm) was generated on the smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity(3 ㎧) and the height of the model(40 mm) was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distributions were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness was clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the location of reattachment point. The thinner the boundary layer thickness, the higher the turbulent kinetic energy Peak around the model roofbecame. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between the model and the approaching boundary layer thickness should be encountered as a major parameter.

The effect of relative position of the stationary turbine blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade tip and shroud heat transfer. The local mass transfer coefficients were measured on the tip and shroud fur the blade fixed at six different positions within a pitch. A low speed stationary annular cascade with a single turbine stage was used. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation technique was used for the detailed mass transfer measurements on the tip and the shroud. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. The results show that the incoming flow condition and heat transfer characteristics significantly change when the relative position of the blade changes. On the tip, the size of high heat/mass transfer region along the pressure side varies in the axial direction and the difference of heat transfer coefficient is up to 40% in the upstream region of the tip because the position of flow reattachment changes. On shroud, the effect of tip leakage vortex on the shroud as well as tip gap entering flow changes as the blade position changes. Thus, significantly different heat transfer patterns are observed with various blade positions and the periodic variation of heat transfer is expected with the blade rotation.

Experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade to investigate local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud and the effect of inlet Reynolds number on the tip and shroud heat transfer. Detailed mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip and the shroud were obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$of the blade chord. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ to investigate the effect of Reynolds number. Flow reattachment after the recirculation near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Shroud surface has very intricate heat/mass transfer distributions due to complex flow patterns such as acceleration, relaminarization, transition to turbulent flow and tip leakage vortex. Heat/mass transfer coefficient on the blade tip is about 1.7 times as high as that on the shroud or blade surface. Overall averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.65}\;and\;Re_{c}^{0.71},$ respectively.

The high-Reynolds number flow around a rectangular cylinder, having streamwise to crossflow length ratio equal to 5 is analyzed in the present paper. The flow is characterized by shear-layer separation from the upstream edges. Vortical structures of different size form from the roll-up of these shear layers, move downstream and interact with the classical vortex shedding further downstream in the wake. The corresponding mean flow is characterized by a recirculation region along the lateral surface of the cylinder, ending by mean flow reattachment close to the trailing edge. The mean flow features on the cylinder side have been shown to be highly sensitive to set-up parameters both in numerical simulations and in experiments. The results of 21 Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are analyzed herein to highlight the impact of the lateral mean recirculation characteristics on the near-wake flow features and on some bulk quantities. The considered simulations have been carried out at Reynolds number Re=DU_∞/ν=40 000, being D the crossflow dimension, U_∞ the freestream velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity of air; the flow is set to have zero angle of attack. Some simulations are carried out with sharp edges (Mariotti et al. 2017), others with different values of the rounding of the upstream edges (Rocchio et al. 2020) and an additional LES is carried out to match the value of the roundness of the upstream edges in the experiments in Pasqualetto et al. (2022). The dimensions of the mean recirculation zone vary considerably in these simulations, allowing us to single out meaningful trends. The streamwise length of the lateral mean recirculation and the streamwise distance from the upstream edge of its center are the parameters controlling the considered quantities. The wake width increases linearly with these parameters, while the vortex-shedding non-dimensional frequency shows a linear decrease. The drag coefficient also linearly decreases with increasing the recirculation length and this is due to a reduction of the suctions on the base. However, the overall variation of C_D is small. Finally, a significant, and once again linear, increase of the fluctuations of the lift coefficient is found for increasing the mean recirculation streamwise length.

This paper studies the aerodynamic performance that the vent mixer-new conceptual supersonic mixer-showed with its geometric characteristics. The hole is 2 mm with 2 mm's distance from the wall in case 1 and with no distance in case 2. In case 3 die hole is 1 mm. Case 1 and case 2 showed the same total pressure recovery ratio, of which the case 3 was lower than that. While cases 1-3 had the same reattachment length, the shear layer was thicker in cases 1 and 2 than in case 3. Within the recirculation zone, cases 1 and 2 had lower pressure loss and higher velocity gradient difference than case 3-they enhance mixing between air and fuel. Separation bubble which is developed by the inflow into the recirculation zone has a significant effect on the total pressure recovery ratio in the combustor. Also separation bubble influences pressure distributions and recirculation flows in the recirculation zone. Therefore, inflow rate of air into the recirculation zone mainly affects the performance of vent mixer.
