  • A quantitative study of impact damage of a soda-lime glass was carried out. An initiation and a propagation of cracks by the impact of two inds of steel ball was investigated. The fron, side and rear view of cracks were observed by a stereo-microscope. And the lowering of the benidng strength due to the impact of steel balls was examined through the 4-point bending test. A transparent glass is very helpful to understand and analyze the impact damage behavior of another brittle matereial. A deagdram about crack patterns according to the threshold impact velocity was sketched. A ring crack and a cone crack were formed at the low impact velocity. And as the impact velocity was higher, initial lateral crack was generated on the slanting surface of cone crack, and radial cracks were generated from the outermost ring crack. When the impact velocity of steel balls exceed a critical velocity, the contact site of specimens were crushed. According to the propagation of a cone crack, a rapid strength degradation occurred. In the specimen having crushed region, a bending strength was converged to a constant value instead of strength degradation.

  • In this driving simulation study, the impairing effects of various types of electronic devices usage(i. e., destination search by using in-vehicle navigation system, TV watching and dialing cellular phone) during driving on front-to-rear-end collision avoidance were investigated. Percentage of collisions, driving speeds when the drivers collided, and initial reaction time for collision avoidance were analyzed and compared as the dependent measures. The results indicated that (1) any types of electronic devices usage during driving induced more serious collision-related impairment than control condition where no additional task was required, and (2) in general, destination search task appeared to impair drivers collision avoidance performance more than the other task requirements in terms of percentage of collisions and initial reaction time for collision avoidance, but TV watching induced most serious collision impact. These results suggested that any types of electronic device usage could distract drivers attention from the primary task of driving, and be resulted in serious outcome in potentially risky situation of front-to-rear-end collision. In particular, mandatory use of eye-hand coordination and receiving feedback seemed to one of essential factor leading the drivers visual attentional distraction.

  • In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the ground reaction force of arm landing on arm and leg during sports aerobics. Subjects of this study were total 10 players of 5 males and 5 females who have are domain sports aerobics medalists more than the third place in national tournaments. The subjects jumped between the two ground reaction force analyzers, while landing their right hand on the front platform(#1) and their right leg on the rear platform(#2), and the data frequency was set to 200Hz. Findings of this study are as follows; More than 3 times of impact peak force of vertical reaction force acted on arm joint than on leg joint. And, when ground reaction force on foot increased, ground reaction force on hand decreased. 3 impact peaks of curve of ground reaction force were found - Impact Peak 1 incurred on the time the palm lands on the ground, Impact Peak 2 absorbing shock secondarily on wrist joint, and Active Peak incurred on the time of holding the weight while pushing out the severly bent elbow joint.

  • This study has examined the impact resistance and blast resistance characteristics of HPFRCC as a research on impact resistance and blast resistance characteristics using high volume mortar and high velocity projectile for evaluating the protection performance of actual buildings as small quantity experiment of laboratory conditions is performed although there was an instance of performing research on mortar that has reinforced fiber followed by the rise of problems on the damage of human life and buildings created due to explosion and shock. As a result, the destruction loss area and depth have decreased in case of the surface compared to the rear side. As tensile strength and tenacity have increased with the increased fiber replacing ratio, a tendency of destruction loss area and depth getting decreased was shown as the impact resistance has increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the formation mechanism of landspout by using the Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS). The landspout occurred over Ilsan, Goyang City, the Republic of Korea on June 10, 2014 with the damage of a private property. In synoptic environment, a cold dry air on the upper layers of the atmosphere, and there was an advection with warm and humid air in the lower atmosphere. Temperature differences between upper and lower layers resulted in thermal instability. The storm began to arise at 1920 KST and reached the mature stage in ten minutes. The cloud top height was estimated at 9 km and the hook echo was appeared at the rear of a storm in simulation result. Model results showed that the downburst was generated in the developed storm over the Ilsan area. This downburst caused the horizontal flow when it diverged near the surface. The horizontal flow was switched to updraft at the rear of storm, and the rear-flank downdrafts (RFDs) current occurred from simulation result. The RFDs took down the vertical flow to the surface. After then, the vertical vorticity could be generated on the surface in simulation result. Subsequently, the vertical vorticity was stretched to form a landspout. The cyclonic vorticity of echo hook from simulation was greater than $3{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$(height of 360 m) and landspout diameter was estimated at 1 km.

  • The development of high performance fabrics have advanced body armor technology and improved ballistic performance while maintaining flexibility. Utilization of the shear thickening phenomenon exhibited by Shear Thickening Fluids (STF) has allowed further enhancement without hindering flexibility of the fabric through a process of impregnation. The effect of STF impregnation on the ballistic performance of fabrics has been studied for impact velocities below 700 m/s. Studies of STF-impregnated fabrics for high velocity impacts, which would provide a transition to significantly higher velocity ranges, are lacking. This study aims to investigate the effect of STF impregnation on the high velocity impact characteristics of Kevlar fabric by effectively dispersing silica nanoparticles in a suspension, impregnating Kevlar fabrics, and performing high velocity impact experiments with projectile velocities in the range of 1 km/s to compare the post impact characteristics between neat Kevlar and impregnated Kevlar fabrics. 100 nm diameter silica nanoparticles were dispersed using a homogenizer and sonicator in a solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and diluted with methanol for effective impregnation to Kevlar fabric, and the methanol was evaporated in a heat oven. High velocity impact of STF-impregnated Kevlar fabric revealed differences in the post impact rear formation compared to neat Kevlar.

  • This work was intended to investigate the effect of vibration transmission paths on the ride vibration of tractor during the rotavating and transporting operations by applying the vibration path analysis method. Accelerations at the cab mounts were measured during the rotavating and transporting operations. Ride vibrations at the sear were than calculated using the measured accelerations at the cab mounts, and the frequency response functions and inertances between the seat and cab mounts, which were derived experimentally by the impact hammer test in static condition. The human sensitivity to vibration frequency was also taken into consideration for the calculation of ride vibrations at the 1/3 octave center frequencies in the frequency domain. Vibrations transmitted through rear cab mounts affected more significantly the ride vibration of tractor. The peak accelerations at the seat occurred at the frequencies of the engine and crank speed, and the frequency induced by tire lugs on the road transportation. It was found that the rear cab mounts should be improved in order to reduce the ride vibrations more effectively.

  • The car crash accidents in low speed occurs most frequently. Damage on a conventional bumper after the car accident causes the bumper to get fixed most of time. This study shows how a gas tube bumper reduces a damageability and increase repairability after the car accidents. The 15 km/h 40% offset front and rear crash test recommended by RCAR (Research council for automobile repairs) standard was performed and evaluated damages on the gas tube bumper by the pendulum impact tester. In this study, the gas tube bumper reduces damageability and increases repairability after car crash accidents. In addition, car frame design to apply the gas tube bumper may consider to be changed.

  • This study is concerned with the control system design using Labview Simulation Interface Toolkit and Matlab/simulink combined system for an application to the personal rapid transit system which has very short headway, requiring accurate speed control to avoid the impact between the vehicles. A simple equation of motion for a vehicle which is activated on the linear motor is introduced. A speed profile that should be tracked by a rear vehicle is produced based on the state information of the two vehicles(the preceding vehicle and the rear vehicle). The speed profile tracking control system is designed by Matlab/simulink. The simulation results show that the proposed control system is effective to evaluate the speed tracking performance.
