This study reviews the rear or tag axle steering system's concepts and technology applied to commercial vehicles. Most commercial vehicles are large in size with more than two axles. Maneuvering them around tight corners, narrow roads, and spaces is a difficult job if only the front axle is steerable. Furthermore, wear and tear in tires will increase as turn angle and number of axles are increased. This problem can be solved using rear axle steering technology that is being used in commercial vehicles nowadays. Rear axle steering system technology uses a cylinder mounted on one of rear axles called a steering cylinder. Cylinder control is the primary objective of the real axle steering system. There are two types of such steering mechanisms. One uses master and slave cylinder concept while the other concept is relatively new. It goes by the name of smart axle, self-steered axle, or smart steering axle driven independently from the front wheel steering. All these different types of steering mechanisms are discussed in this study with detailed description, advantages, disadvantages, and safety considerations.

A study of the guideway vehicle was made for a comparison of ride stabilities between its two primary steering types; one is the front wheel steering and the other the front-rear wheel. A numerical model as a closed loop system was built for an investigation of various factors to have an influence on the vehicular critical speed which is closely associated with ridabilities. It was shown that dynamics stabilities of the front steering type was much better over a large value of steering gain and the longer distance between front axle and guide link for both types provided better stabilities as well. A large steering gain ratio of the front to the rear significantly plays an important role in an improvement of stability in the front-rear steering. To observe a qualitative trend on stability behaviors, the root locus was obtained by considering a time lag which may be frequently caused by the complicated steering mechanism. In performing so, the appropriate selection of steering gain had a greater effect on the front-rear steering vehicle far more ride comfort. In addition, the dynamics model proposed here can be utilized for a more accurate evaluation on the vehicle design in lateral or yawing absorber and moreover expanded for the analysis of independent four-wheel steering vehicle.

In this study, we developed a dynamic model and steering controller model for an autonomous tractor and evaluated their performance. The traction force was measured using a 6-component load cell, and the rotational speed of the wheels was monitored using proximity sensors installed on the axles. Torque sensors were employed to measure the axle torque. The PI (proportional integral) controller's coefficients were determined using the trial-error method. The coefficient of the P varied in the range of 0.1 - 0.5 and the I coefficient was determined in 3 increments of 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1. To validate the simulation model, we conducted RMS (root mean square) comparisons between the measured data of axle torque and the simulation results. The performance of the steering controller model was evaluated by analyzing the damping ratio calculated with the first and second overshoots. The average front and rear axle torque ranged from 3.29 - 3.44 and 6.98 - 7.41 kNm, respectively. The average rotational speed of the wheel ranged from 29.21 - 30.55 rpm at the front, and from 21.46 - 21.63 rpm at the rear. The steering controller model exhibited the most stable control performance when the coefficients of P and I were set at 0.5 and 0.01, respectively. The RMS analysis of the axle torque results indicated that the left and right wheel errors were approximately 1.52% and 2.61% (at front) and 7.45% and 7.28% (at rear), respectively.

A rear axle steering (RAS) system is attached to the rear of medium and large commercial vehicles that transport large cargo. The existing RAS systems are driven by electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA), and most commercialized EHAs consist of electric motors, hydraulic pumps, relief valves, prefill valves and cylinders. The prefill valve required for such EHAs is a type of check valve with extremely low cracking pressure that should not allow RAS to have noise or vibration, and the prefill valve prevents system negative pressure as well as unstable operation. Most papers on this topic rely on experiments to predict valve performance, and theoretically detailed modeling of valves or pipelines is performed, but it is very rare to evaluate hydraulic vibration characteristics by analysing everything from hydraulic pumps to valves comprehensively. In this study, we proposed an experimental circuit that can predict the performance of the prefill valve. The study also analysed the pressure-flow pulsation that is transmitted to the valve through the pipeline, and how the transmitted pressure-flow pulsation affects the valve vibration.
The bi-modal tram guided by the magnetic guidance system has two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension to lower the floor of the car and improve ride quality. The turning radius of the vehicle may increase as a consequence of the long wheel base. Therefore, the vehicle is equipped with the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system for safe driving on a curved road. Front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions, which means a negative mode, to minimize the turning radius. On the other hand, they also should be steered in the same direction, which means a positive mode, for the stopping mode. Moreover, only the front axle is steered for stability of the vehicle upon high-speed driving. In summary, steering angles and directions of the each axle should be changed according to the driving environment and steering mode. This paper proposes an appropriate AWS control algorithm for stable driving of the bi-modal tram. Furthermore, a multi-body model of the vehicle is simulated to verify the suitability of the algorithm. This model can also analyze the different dynamic characteristics between 2WS and AWS.

The bi-modal vehicle is composed of two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension and all wheels are steerable. Since the bi-modal vehicle has longer wheelbase than most urban buses, the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system is adapted for to ensure safe driving and proper turning radius on a curved road. This paper proposes an AWS control algorithm for stable driving of bi-modal vehicle. Steering angles and directions of each axle of bi-modal vehicle changed according to the driving environment and steering modes. In the case that front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions is a negative mode, and the other case that the axles should be steered in the same direction is a positive mode. For example, in the positive mode, front and real axles are steered in the same direction, while in the negative mode, they are steered in the opposite direction. A multibody model of the vehicle is used to verify the performance of the steering algorithm and simulation results of 2WS are compared with those of AWS under the same condition.
