  • Objectives Two conflicting readings of "Donguisusebowon" so far have been presented that Sasang Constitutional Medicine inherited the traditional Five Elements theory and that it was a new perspective on its own right. The main purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical ground of Sasang Constitutional Medicine to see whether it has inherited the Traditional Korean Medicine, and show that it had been developed as an original view independent of the Five Elements theory. Methods To do this, I inquired into the theoretical background of Sasang Constitutional Medicine as well as its philosophical premises and its leading ideas. Results and Conclusions As a result, I have found that Sasang Constitutional Medicine is an original medical theory developed in empirical terms on its own right, divorced from the transcendental view of the Five Elements theory, while borrowing some concepts from I-Ching and Neo-Confucianism only for technical tools. In short, Sasang Constitutional Medicine may well be put as calling for a reappraisal of the Han-medical and Confucian accounts of human being, and a transition from speculative method based on the Five Elements theory to a verifiable empirical method. In this vein, my reading of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in empirical perspective may well be appraised as presenting a new way to further inquiries into the theoretical nature of it, and to getting itself across with Western medicine as well.

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that not every patient with hydrocephalus after decompressive craniectomy needs cerebrospinal fluid diversion, and that cranioplasty should be performed before considering cerebrospinal fluid diversion. Methods: Data were collected from 67 individual traumatic brain injury patients who underwent cranioplasty between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Patients' clinical and radiographic progression was reviewed retrospectively based on their medical records. Results: Twenty-two of the 67 patients (32.8%) had ventriculomegaly on computed tomography scans before cranioplasty. Furthermore, 38 patients showed progressive ventriculomegaly after cranioplasty. Of these 38 patients, only six (15.7%) showed worsening neurologic symptoms, which were improved by the tap test; these patients eventually underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. Conclusions: Cerebrospinal fluid diversion is not always required for radiologically diagnosed ventriculomegaly in traumatic brain injury patients after decompressive craniectomy. A careful clinical and neurologic evaluation should be conducted before placing a shunt.

  • Misguided use, manipulation, misappropriation, disruption and mismanagement of Information deeply affects the infosphere as well as the social and moral fabric of a society. Information ethics is an attempt to bring the creation, organization, dissemination, and use of information within the ambit of ethical standards and moral codes. The diverse and inherently pluralistic nature of societies however puts forth an additional demand on us - to come up with an intercultural information ethics. An intercultural ethics which is other-centric, context sensitive and workable without being homogenizing, patronizing and colonizing. An endeavor in that direction has already been made by proponents of intercultural information ethics like: Charles M. Ess, Fay Sudweeks, Rafael Capurro, Pak-Hang Wong, Soraj Hongladarom et al. In our paper, we propose that the kind of ethical pluralism being sought in the domain of information ethics can be attained by having a reappraisal of the current methodological strategies, by casting a critical relook at the Eurocentric ethical model. This paper analyses the current framework of Intercultural Information Ethics. And in an endeavour to move towards an all-encompassing, other-centric, workable, intercultural, harmonious and compassionate model of 'Pluralistic Information Ethics', it proposes the Indian / Asian philosophical method of 'Samvāda' to the current inventory which includes methods like: 'parrhesia/free speech' and 'interpretive phronēsis.

  • There have been contradictory reports concerning the role of garlic on kimchi fermentation; therefore, in this study, the stimulatory effect of garlic on the fermentation of kimchi was reappraised. In this study, fermentation of kimchi prepared using spring Chinese cabbage was stimulated by the addition of garlic, but kimchi prepared using autumn Chinese cabbage was not. In addition, the results of this study revealed that the fermentation of kimchi prepared using spring Chinese cabbage was found to be stimulated by glucose, yeast extract, peptone, and secondary ingredients of kimchi, but the fermentation of kimchi prepared using autumn Chinese cabbage was not stimulated by these ingredients. Taken together, these results indicate that general nutrients in garlic stimulate the fermentation of kimchi by compensating for nutrients that are not found in spring Chinese cabbages. However, these findings do not indicate that certain specific substance(s) in garlic stimulate kimchi fermentation.

  • Purpose: Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) provides an important initial screening examination in adult trauma patients. However, due to its low sensitivity, FAST is not a replacement for computed tomography (CT) in hemodynamically stable trauma patients. The aim of this study was to determine the test characteristics of FAST in adult, hemodynamically stable, blunt abdominal trauma patients by using a critical action as a reference standard. Methods: The medical records for FAST examination at a single hospital from January 2009 to February 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criterion was isolated, hemodynamically stable, blunt abdominal trauma. Hemodynamically unstable patients or patients with penetrating injuries were excluded. The reference standard was the presence of a critical action, which was defined as one of the following: 1) operative intervention for a finding discovered on CT, 2) interventional radiology for bleeding, 3) transfusion of 2 or more packed RBCs, or 4) death at the emergency department. Results: There were 230 patients who met the inclusion criterion. There were 20 true positive, 206 true negative, 0 false positive, and 4 false negative results. The sensitivity and the specificity were 83% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: Despite its low sensitivity for detecting any abnormal finding discovered on CT, negative FAST could aid to exclude critical action in hemodynamically stable, blunt abdominal trauma patients.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a substantive theory on self-management conducted by the adolescents with chronic kidney disease from their lived experience. Methods: Data was collected through in-depth interviews from May to December in 2015 with thirteen adolescents with chronic kidney disease. The data collected were analyzed on the basis of Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory. Results: The core of the category found in this study was "overcoming the unstable sense of self- control and integrating disease experience into their life". The causal conditions triggering the central phenomenon were "restriction in daily life" and "manifestation and aggravation of symptom". The central phenomenon in the experience of self-management within the adolescents with chronic kidney disease was "unstable sense of self control". The intervening condition for unstable self control were "micro system support" and "motivational resources". This study found that the adolescents with chronic kidney disease followed a series of strategies when they faced the central phenomenon, including; passive coping, reappraisal of illness, active coping, compliance with treatment, controlling physical activity, and adjusting school life. With these strategic approaches, the adolescents with chronic kidney disease could maintain their active lifestyles and achieve their health behaviors. The process of self-management by these adolescents passed through four phases; limited experience caused by diseases, effort for normalization, reorganizing their daily lives, and integration with daily lives and self-management. Conclusion: This Study explored the process and experience of self-management of adolescents with chronic kidney disease. These findings can be used for basis for developing substantive theory and nursing intervention strategy for adolescents with chronic kidney diseases.

  • The radical development of modern mathematics is due to the appearance of Collection Theory by George Cantor. The Set Theory is independent as an area and also closely interrelated with other areas. So its content becomes a common sense and a basic part across the whole area of modern mathematics. Accordingly, the basic element of modern mathematics is helping young children get familiar with set as early as possible. The thinking of set by which children can categorize, make partial sets and correspondences, understand the general characteristic, and conceptualize the discovered relationships is very important for young children. At this point where the Math education for young children is emphasized under the influence of the modernization movement of Math education, the systematic education for building up the set concept as the basic background of number concept during the early childhood is required. On current mathematics education for young children, graphs, the foundation of geometry, time, and patterns have been included in the traditional and practical content related to numbers. However, the education on collection which is the foundation of number concept is insufficient. A study shows that the level of young children's understanding on set is quite high, but the set concept isn't reflected in current Math curriculum for young children. And basic activities neccesary on building up the set concept, such as categorization, comparison, etc. are conducted in kindergardens but unsatisfactory because of those kindergarden teachers' premature understanding on the set concept. In conclusion, the curriculum for young children should be reorganized based on the set concept as the kernel concept. Also, the reappraisal of the training curriculum and the supplementary efucation for kindergarden teachers are urgent for raising the teaching ability of those kindergarden teachers.

  • Since the development of water resources is getting more difficult than ever before because of human-sociological condition, it would be necessary to develop a practically applicable technique for the management of water resources based on demand-side concept that could reduce unusable release for more effective and appropriate allocation of limited water resources. The objective of the study is to develop an optimal reservoir system operation model for water supply and energy augmentation by the combination of water budget analysis method in downstream area by MIP technique. The applicable study of the developed model was carried out and water supply capability of Nakdong river basin was re-evaluated by the developed model. The model has been found successful to guarantee appropriate water supply to the basin by means of deficit-supply management method and also turned out to be more practical tool for an optimal reservoir system operation model than other existing models.

  • Cephalometric prediction tracing is the preoperative double checking procedure which can predict bony and soft tissue change. Soft tissue profile prediction is routinely performed according to the known ratios of the soft to hard tissue movement which can vary considerably in each individual. Besides interindividual variation of the ratios of the soft to hard tissue change, actual results of the postoperative soft tissue profile can reflect other important modifying factors if it is compared with prediction tracing used. The purpose of this study is to compare soft tissue prediction tracing used with postoperative tracing and to find intervening modifying factor via serial tracing. Review of 30 prediction tracing showed that the most important factor contributing to prodiction tracing inaccuracy was the skeletal and dental relapse. And, some factors which may be responsible for prediction tracing inaccuracy were discussed.
