  • This paper is concerned with shape optimization problems by the boundary element method (BEM) emphasizing the use of a reduced basis reanalysis technique proposed recently by the author. Problems of this class are conventionally carried out iteratively through an optimizer; a sequential quadratic programming-based optimizer is used in this study. The iterative process produces a succession of intermediate designs. Repeated analyses for the systems associated with these intermediate designs using an exact approach such as the LU decomposition method are time consuming if the order of the systems is large. The newly developed reanalysis technique devised for boundary element systems is utilized to enhance the computational efficiency in the repeated system solvings. Presented numerical examples on optimal shape design problems in electric potential distribution and elasticity show that the new reanalysis technique is capable of speeding up the design process without sacrificing the accuracy of the optimal solutions.

  • Structural optimization algorithm of steel box girder bridges using improved higher-order approximate reanalysis technique is proposed in this paper. The proposed approximation method is a generalization of the convex approximation method. The order of the approximate reanalysis for each function is analytically adjusted in the optimization process. This self-adjusted capability makes the approximate structural analysis values conservative enough to maintain the optimum design point of the approximate problem. The efficiency of proposed optimazation algorithm, compared with conventional algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the steel box girder bridges. The efficiency and robustness of proposed algorithm is also demonstrated in practical steel box girder bridges.

  • This Paper presents the response force distribution factor(RDF) and its application to recalculation of member forces in case of partial changes of structures. Using RDF, the mutuality of response forces between members can be estimated. The reanalysis technique recalculates directly any displacement or member force under consideration in real time without a full reanalysis in spite of local changes in member stiffness or connectivity using RDF. It is expected that RDF and the reanalysis technique can be used to develop efficient analysis techniques for tall buildings.

  • An optimum design algorithm of PSC box girder bridges using design sensitivity analysis is proposed in this paper. For the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, approximated reanalysis techniques using design sensitivity analysis are introduced. And also to save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through approximated structural responses is proposed. A design sensitivity analysis of structural response is executed by automatic differentiation(AD). The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm, compared with conventional algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical example.

  • For the conduct of optimum design for such complicated and large structures as ship structure by direct structural analysis such as finite element method, it is very important problem that the process needs much computational efforts due to the repeated structural analysis. In this study, the reanalysis technique based on the modified reduced basis method is applied in the process to reduce the computing time required in repeated structural analysis. Numerical examples to simple grillage and actual ship structure are performed and applicability of reanalysis technique to structural optimization process is discussed.

  • SDM (Structural Dynamics Modification) is a tool to improve dynamic characteristics of a structure, more specifically of a base structure, by adding or deleting auxiliary (modifying) structures. In this paper, the goal of the optimal SDM is set to maximize the natural frequency of a base plate structure by attaching serially-connected beam stiffeners. The design variables are chosen as positions of the attaching beam stiffeners, where the number of stiffeners is considered as a design space. The problem of non-matching interface nodes between the base plate and beam stiffeners is solved by using localized Lagrange multipliers, which act to glue the two structures with non-matching interface nodes. As fer the cases of non-matching interface nodes problem, the governing equation of motion of a structure can be considered from the viewpoint of a topological modification, which involves the change of the number of structural members and DOFs. Consequently, the eigenpairs of the beam-stiffened plate structure are obtained by using an eigen reanalysis technique of topological modifications. Evolution Strategies (ES), which is a probabilistic population-based optimization technique that mimics the principles from biological evolution in nature, is utilized as a mean for the optimization.

  • The proposed method in this paper. termed the substructural reanalysis technique, utilizes the computational merits of the component mode synthesis technique and of reanalysis technique for the design sensitivities of the dynamic characteristics of substructurally combined structure. It is shown that the dynamic characteristics of the entire structure can be obtained by synthesizing the substructural eigensolution and the characteristics of the eigensolution for the design variables of the modifiable substructure. In this paper , the characteristics of the eigenvalue problems obtained by this proposed method are compared to exact eigensolution in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. and the advantage of this proposed method as compared to the direct application of the whole structure and experimental results is demonstrated through examples of numerical calculation for the dynamic characteristics (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of a flexible vibration of thin cylinderical shell with branch shell under 2-end fixed positions, boundary condition. Thin cylinderical shell of overall length 1280mm, external diameter 360mm, thickness 3mm with branch shell is made of mild steel. The load condition for dynamic response in this paper is impulsive load of which magnitude is 10kgf, which have short duration of 0.1 sec. and time interval applied to calculate. $\Delta$T is 1.0$\times$10 super(-4) seconds.
