Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the air flow characteristics in a plant factory with different inlet and outlet locations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Methods: In this study, the flow was assumed to be a steady-state, incompressible, and three-dimensional turbulent flow. A realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model was applied to show more reasonable results than the standard model. A CFD software was used to perform the numerical simulation. For validation of the simulation model, a prototype plant factory ($5,900mm{\times}2,800mm{\times}2,400mm$) was constructed with two inlets (${\Phi}250mm$) and one outlet ($710mm{\times}290mm$), located on the top side wall. For the simulation model, the average air current speed at the inlet was $5.11m{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Five cases were simulated to predict the airflow pattern in the plant factory with different inlet and outlet locations. Results: The root mean square error of measured and simulated air current speeds was 13%. The error was attributed to the assumptions applied to mathematical modelling and to the magnitude of the air current speed measured at the inlet. However, the measured and predicted airflow distributions of the plant factory exhibited similar patterns. When the inlets were located at the center of the side wall, the average air current speed in the plant factory was increased but the spatial uniformity was lowered. In contrast, if the inlets were located on the ceiling, the average air current speed was lowered but the uniformity was improved. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that the airflow pattern in the plant factory with multilayer cultivation shelves was greatly affected by the locations of the inlet and the outlet.
Since emission regulations for vehicles have become more stringent, SCR technology has drawn a strong attention in order to reduce NOx emissions. Optimal design of a reductant injection nozzle and a multi-hole plate located between the cone and catalyst is critical in that the uniform distribution of reductant is necessary to maximize the NOx conversion efficiency and minimize the slip of reductant in SCR. In this work, an LPG fuel(C3H8 in vapor state) was used as a reductant for LPG vehicles. A Realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model is used for turbulence, and SCR body is defined as porous media with inertia and viscous resistances measured in this work. Effect of the number of nozzle holes on the flow mixing index was analyzed, which revealed that a four hole nozzle shows the best performance in terms of uniformity of flow. An installment of a multi-hole plate at the entrance of catalyst was evaluated with flow mixing index, uniformity of flow, and pressure drop. A multi-hole plate with gradual hole diameter change in three steps showed the best uniformity of flow within the conditions suggested in this work.
This paper investigated the wind-snow flow around the bogie region of a high-speed train under crosswinds using a coupled numerical method of the unsteady Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and discrete phase model (DPM). The flow features around the bogie region were discussed and the influence of bogie fairing height on the snow accumulation on the bogie was also analyzed. Here the high-speed train was running at a speed of 200 km/h in a natural environment with the crosswind speed of 15 m/s. The mesh resolution and methodology for CFD analysis were validated against wind tunnel experiments. The results show that large negative pressure occurs locally on the bottom of wheels, electric motors, gear covers, while the positive pressure occurs locally on those windward surfaces. The airflow travels through the complex bogie and flows towards the rear bogie plate, causing a backflow in the upper space of the bogie region. The snow particles mainly accumulate on the wheels, electric motors, windward sides of gear covers, side fairings and back plate of the bogie. Longer side fairings increase the snow accumulation on the bogie, especially on the back plate, side fairings and brake clamps. However, the fairing height shows little impact on snow accumulation on the upper region of the bogie. Compared to short side fairings, a full length side fairing model contributes to more than two times of snow accumulation on the brake clamps, and more than 20% on the whole bogie.

The present study numerically investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional wings in the vicinity of the ground by solving two-dimensional steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model of the realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Numerical simulations are performed at a wide range of the normalized ground clearance by the chord length ($0.1{\leq}h/C{\leq}1.25$) for the angles of attack ($0^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}10^{\circ}$) in the prestall regime at a Reynolds number (Re) of $2{\times}10^6$ based on free stream velocity $U_{\infty}$ and the chord length. As the physical model of this study, a cambered airfoil of NACA 4406 has been selected by a performance test for various airfoils. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio is achieved at ${\alpha}=4^{\circ}$ and h / C = 0.1. Under the conditions of ${\alpha}=4^{\circ}$ and h / C = 0.1, the effect of the Reynolds number on the aerodynamic characteristics of NACA 4406 is investigated in the range of $2{\times}10^5{\leq}Re{\leq}2{\times}10^9$. As Re increases, $C_l$ and $C_d$ augments and decreases, respectively, and the lift-to-drag ratio increases linearly.
Noise-barriers on both sides of the roadway (hereafter referred to as double noise-barriers), are a common feature along roads in Korea, and these are expected to have important effects on the near-road air pollution dispersion of vehicle emissions. This study evaluated the double noise-barrier impact on near-road air pollution dispersion, using a FLUENT computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate vehicle air pollutant dispersion, in around 11 cases of double noise-barriers. The simulated concentration profiles and surface concentrations under no barrier cases were compared with the experimental results. The results of the simulated flows show the following three regimes in this study: isolated roughness (H/W=0.05), wake interface (H/W=0.1), and skimming flow (H/W>0.15). The results also show that the normalized average concentrations at surface (z=1 m) between the barriers increase with increasing double noise-barrier height; however, normalized average concentrations at the top position between the barriers decrease with increasing barrier height. It was found that the double noise-barrier decreases normalized average concentrations of leeward positions, ranging from 0.8 (H/W=0.1, wake interface) to 0.1 (H/W=0.5, skimming flow) times lower than that of the no barrier case, at 10 x/h downwind position; and ranging from 1.0 (H/W=0.1) to 0.4 (H/W=0.5) times lower than that of the no barrier case, at 60 x/h downwind position.
A RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) based numerical method is developed for the evaluation of ship resistance and self-propulsion performances. In the usability aspect of CFD for the hull form design, the field grid around practical hull forms is generated by solving a grid Poisson equation based on the hull surface grid generated from station offsets and centerline profile. A body force technique is introduced to model the effects of the propeller in which the propeller loads are obtained from potential flow analysis using an unsteady lifting surface method. The free surface is captured by using a two-phase level-set method and the realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. The hull attitude in vertical plane, i.e., trim and sinkage, is calculated by using a quasi-steady method and then considered in the computation by translating and rotating the grid system according to the values. For the validation of the proposed method, the numerical results of resistance tests for KCS, KLNG, and KVLCC1 and of self-propulsion test for KCS are compared with experimental data.
The present paper provides a CFD analysis of diffraction problem for a ship with forward speed using an unsteady RANS simulation method, a WAVIS code. The WAVIS viscous solver adopting a finite volume method has second order accuracy in time and field discretizaions for the RANS equations. A two phase level-set method and a realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are adopted to compute the free surface and to meet the turbulence closure, respectively. To validate the capability of the present numerical methods for the simulation of an unsteady progressive regular wave, computations are performed for three grid sets with refinement ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$. The main simulation is performed for a DTMB5512 model with a forward speed in a regular head sea condition. Validation of the present numerical method is carried out by comparing the present CFD results with available unsteady experimental data published in the 2005 Tokyo CFD Workshop: resistance, heave force, pitch moment, unsteady free surface elevations and velocity fields.
This research investigates the internal flow and heat transfer in a plate heat exchanger with chevron shape by utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The basic unit of the plate heat exchanger is generally composed of a hot channel, an intermediate chevron plate, and a cold channel. Several studies have reported experimental and numerical simulation of heat transfer and pressure drop. This study focused on the detailed numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in the complicated chevron shape channel. The long chevron plate was designed to include 16 chevron patterns. For proper mesh resolution, the number of cells was determined after the grid sensitivity test. The working fluid is water, and its properties are defined as a function of temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from 900 to 9,000 in the simulation. A realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and non-equilibrium wall function are properly considered for the turbulent flow. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficient are validated by comparing them with existing empirical correlations, and other patterned flow phenomena are also investigated.

In this study, the effects of the mesh barrier on the free dispersion of ammonia were numerically investigated under different atmospheric conditions. This study presents the detail and flow feature of the dispersion of ammonia through the mesh barrier on various free stream conditions to decline and limit the toxic danger of the ammonia. It is assumed that the dispersion of the ammonia occurred through the leakage in the pipeline. Parametric studies were conducted on the performance of the mesh barrier by using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Numerical simulations of ammonia dispersion in the presence of mesh barrier revealed significant results in a fully turbulent free stream condition. The results clearly show that the flow behavior was found to be a direct result of mesh size and ammonia dispersion is highly influenced by these changes in flow patterns in downstream. In fact, the flow regime becomes laminar as flow passes through mesh barrier. According to the results, the mesh barrier decreased the maximum concentration of the ammonia gas and limited the risk zone (more than 500 ppm) lower than 2 m height. Furthermore, a significant reduction occurs in the slope of the upper boundary of $NH_3$ risk zone distribution at downstream when a mesh barrier is presented. Thus, this device highly restricts the leak distribution of ammonia in the industrial plan.
