  • The point cloud provides viewers with intuitive geometric understanding but requires a huge amount of data. Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has developed video-based point-cloud compression in the range of 300-700. As the compression rate increases, the complexity increases to the extent that it takes 101.36 s to compress one frame in an experimental environment using a personal computer. To realize real-time point-cloud compression processing, the direct patch projection (DPP) method proposed herein simplifies the complex patch segmentation process by classifying and projecting points according to their geometric positions. The DPP method decreases the complexity of the patch segmentation from 25.75 s to 0.10 s per frame, and the entire process becomes 8.76 times faster than the conventional one. Consequently, this proposed DPP method yields similar peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) outcomes to those of the conventional method at reduced times (4.7-5.5 times) at the cost of bitrate overhead. The objective and subjective results show that the proposed DPP method can be considered when low-complexity requirements are required in lightweight device environments.

  • Spectral analysis is used to determine the frequency of time series data. We first determine the frequency of the series through the power spectrum or the periodogram and then calculate the period of a cycle that may exist in a time series. Estimating the frequency using a Bayesian technique has been developed and proven to be useful; however, the Bayesian estimator for the frequency cannot be analytically solved through mathematical equations and may be handled numerically or computationally. In this paper, we make an inference on the Bayesian frequency through both resampling a parameter by Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and resampling data by bootstrap methods for a time series. We take the Korean real estate price index as an example for Bayesian frequency estimation. We have found a difference in the periods between the sale price index and the long term rental price index, but the difference is not statistically significant.

  • We develop a complete system that includes data collection, signal processing, and real-time interaction for effective neurofeedback training. Our system supports a sophisticated technique to find threshold values which are quite important for effective neurofeedback system. A therapist specifies a target success rate of positive feedback, allowable error and time. The system computes a current success rate and compare it with the target one. If the difference between two rates exceeds the allowable error for allowable time, we find an optimum threshold value to obtain the target success rate by using numerical optimization technique. We conduct several experiments by varying input parameters: target success rate, allowable error and time, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique by showing the desired target success rate is stably obtained and systematically controlled by input parameters.

  • Image-based traffic information collection systems have entered widespread adoption and use in many countries since these systems are not only capable of replacing existing loop-based detectors which have limitations in management and administration, but are also capable of providing and managing a wide variety of traffic related information. In addition, these systems are expanding rapidly in terms of purpose and scope of use. Currently, the utilization of image processing technology in the field of traffic accident management is limited to installing surveillance cameras on locations where traffic accidents are expected to occur and digitalizing of recorded data. Accurately recording the sequence of situations around a traffic accident in a signal intersection and then objectively and clearly analyzing how such accident occurred is more urgent and important than anything else in resolving a traffic accident. Therefore, in this research, we intend to present a technology capable of overcoming problems in which advanced existing technologies exhibited limitations in handling real-time due to large data capacity such as object separation of vehicles and tracking, which pose difficulties due to environmental diversities and changes at a signal intersection with complex traffic situations, as pointed out by many past researches while presenting and implementing an active and environmentally adaptive methodology capable of effectively reducing false detection situations which frequently occur even with the Gaussian complex model analytical method which has been considered the best among well-known environmental obstacle reduction methods. To prove that the technology developed by this research has performance advantage over existing automatic traffic accident recording systems, a test was performed by entering image data from an actually operating crossroad online in real-time. The test results were compared with the performance of other existing technologies.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze and characterize end-to-end packet statistics after modeling and simulation of WiFi (IEEE 802.11g) and WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) of a virtual wireless network using OPNET Modeler Wireless Suite. Wireless internal and external network simulators such as Remcom's Wireless InSite Real Time (RT) module, WinProp: W-LAN/Fixed WiMAX/Mobile WiMAX, and SMI system, are designed to consider data transfer rate based on wireless propagation signal strength. However, we approached our research in a different perspective without support for characteristic of these wireless network simulators. That is, we will discuss the purpose of a visual analysis for these packets, how to receive each point packets (e.g., wireless user, base station or access point, and http server) through end-to-end virtual network modeling based on integrated wired and wireless network without wireless propagation signal strength. Measuring packet statistics is important in QoS metric analysis among wireless network performance metrics. Clear packet statistics is an especially essential metric in guaranteeing QoS for WiMAX users. We have found some interesting results through modeling and simulation for virtual wireless network using OPNET Modeler Wireless Suite. We are also able to analyze multi-view efficiency through experiment/observation result.

  • Digital hearing aids offer many advantages over conventional analog hearing aids. With the advent of high speed digital signal processing chips, new digital techniques have been introduced to digital hearing aids. In addition, the evaluation of new ideas in hearing aids is necessarily accompanied by intensive subject-based clinical tests which requires much time and cost. In this paper, we present an objective method to evaluate and predict the performance of hearing aid systems without the help of such subject-based tests. In the hearing impairment simulation(HIS) algorithm, a sensorineural hearing impairment medel is established from auditory test data of the impaired subject being simulated. Also, the nonlinear behavior of the loudness recruitment is defined using hearing loss functions generated from the measurements. To transform the natural input sound into the impaired one, a frequency sampling filter is designed. The filter is continuously refreshed with the level-dependent frequency response function provided by the impairment model. To assess the performance, the HIS algorithm was implemented in real-time using a floating-point DSP. Signals processed with the real-time system were presented to normal subjects and their auditory data modified by the system was measured. The sensorineural hearing impairment was simulated and tested. The threshold of hearing and the speech discrimination tests exhibited the efficiency of the system in its use for the hearing impairment simulation. Using the HIS system we evaluated three typical hearing aid algorithms.

  • Recently, an RSSI-based fingerprinting localization technology has been widely used in indoor location-based services. In the conventional fingerprinting method, as many APs as possible are used to increase the accuracy of location estimation. In another study, a part of APs having the strongest RSSI signal intensity are selected and used to reduce the time spent for positioning. However, it does not reflect the influence of RSSI occurred from the changes of the surrounding environments such as human movement or moving obstacles in a real environment. The environmental changes may cause the difference between the predicted RSSI signal strength value and the measured value, and thus occur an unpredictable error in the position estimation. Therefore, in order to mitigate the error caused by environmental factors, it is necessary to select APs suitable for indoor positioning estimation considering the changes in the surrounding environments. In this paper, we propose a method to select stable APs considering the influence of surrounding environments and derive a suitable positioning algorithm. In addition, we compare and analyze the performance of the proposed method with that of the existing AP selection methods through experiments.

  • Due to the development of society, the demand for electric power has increased and the quality control of electric power has become an important issue. In order to efficiently perform such power management, we propose a DSP based power measurement system for multi-wire power measurement. Since the conventional power measurement system can measure only the power of one line, a power quality measurement device is required for each line in order to measure the power quality of the individual line. Respectively. The system proposed in this paper proposes a system capable of real-time measurement of power quality at up to 12 points using digital signal processing algorithm, and the prototype based on this system was evaluated through the official test report of Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. As a result of the performance test, it was evaluated that the error range is excellent at ${\pm}0.3%$.

  • GPS radio occultation is a remote sensing technique probing atmospheric properties based on the fact that GPS signal is refracted and delayed by atmosphere. The FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC mission jointly developed by the USA and Taiwan is providing about 2500 occultation soundings a day on the near real-time basis. The Korean KOMPSAT-5/AOPOD system is preparing to launch for monitoring troposphere and ionosphere using a dual frequency GPS receiver and the antenna for occultation data acquisition. In this paper, we examine the methods for signal processing and the geometry analysis for GPS radio occultation, and look into the retrieval techniques for the temperature and humidity of troposphere and the electron density and scintillation of ionosphere. Using these atmospheric properties, we aim to derive the strategies for applying GPS radio occultation to space weather, for example, ionospheric TEC(total electron content) analysis for earthquake monitoring and the Open API(application programming interface) development for more effective data service.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions of butane flow have been investigated from laser image signals by developed three-dimensional digital speckle tomography. Moved signals of speckles have been captured by multiple CCD images in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and transient. The signals of speckle movements between no flow and downward butane flow from a circular half opening have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays fur density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields have been reconstructed from the fringe shift signal which is integrated from the deflection angle by a real-time multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART).
