  • This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.

  • The aim of this study is to deduce color temperature and illuminance by conducting the preference & affective evaluation consequent on illuminance change of ambient light in case of the lighting method of ambient light mixed with task light in time of reading which is visual work action among the action in learning space. As a result of the prior survey on preferred lighting method in time of the act of reading targeting 20 experts before doing evaluation, the method of lighting mixed with ambient light and task light was found to be the highest. Such a result is analyzed to be attributable to the fact that the less the difference in illuminance of nearby space and work surface because of the mixed method of lighting, the less the glare, which makes a reader feels easy and concentrate on reading. On the basis of descriptive statistics of evaluation results and impact analysis by category, this study recommends the application of combinations of ambient light illuminance ranging from 40lx to 100lx with color temperature of 5500~6000K in case of the method of lighting mixed with general light and task light.

  • Objective: This study aims to develop a new desk with a built-in bookholder and desktop-mounted sliding drawer for reducing stress of seated reading postures and to analyze its effect. Background: It is general for readers to bend their back and neck when reading books on desks, which may result in high back and neck postural stress. In addition, postures using vertically layered drawers positioned at the side of users may be awkward. Method: For reducing the postural stress, a new desk with a built-in bookholder and sliding drawer was developed based on a standard of KS G 4208 for student desk. The muscle activities of reading postures on both existing and new desks were measured using EMG, in which seven male and three female college students participated. The postural stress, and musculoskeletal discomfort and ease of usage for existing and new drawers were analyzed by RULA and questionnaire survey, respectively. Results: Compared to existing desk, the muscle activity for the new desk with a bookholder was reduced by 47% when reading books. In addition, musculoskeletal discomforts in the shoulder, neck and low back were significantly lower when using the new desk with a bookholder. Although the stresses for postures using the desktop-mounted sliding drawer and general drawer were not significantly different, the questionnaire survey revealed that the new desktop-mounted sliding drawer is easier to use. Conclusion: A new desk developed in this study significantly reduced postural stress and enhanced subjective preference when reading. Application: This would be useful when developing new desks with low postural stress.

  • A purpose of this study is to understand Platonic View of Health in $\boxDr$Politeia$\boxUl$. Though Plato was not so much a doctor as a philosopher. he had health care of children at heart. He mapped out an ideal type of nation in $\ulcorner$Politeia$\lrcorner$. and he founded a Akademeia in order to realize his dreams. In his course of education. he put emphasis on the problem of health. He extended poetry education for mental health and physical education for physical health. He placed high value on mental health above physical health. and poetry education corresponds to our reading education of today. He perceived that reading had a considerable influence on mental health promotion. According to his assertion, life style, too. had something to do with health condition. To lead a simple. temperate life makes one' health promote, on the other hand, to lead a complicated, intemperate life makes one' health injure. Morever, he approved of a eugenic marriage and the law of jungle. If one is unable to take care of one' health oneself. he would rather die than live. We cannot accept this proposal by general consent. but we cannot be too careful of our health. We can draw out a philosophy of health from Platonic View of Health. For example. the importance of health education. the preference of mental health. the influence of reading education. and responsibility for self-care, etc. We need to establish a philosophy of health scientifically by lasting study of records.
