An Analysis of Online Readers' Advisory Services Offered by Public Libraries (공공도서관의 온라인 독자상담 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the rapid advancement of information technology and changes in the reading environment, the readers' advisory services provided by public libraries are facing challenges and opportunities. Recognizing the need for public libraries to respond and propel their services forward, this study analyzed the current status of online readers' advisory services offered by public libraries in Korea and discusses areas that require improvement. To achieve this, the study analyzed the online readers' advisory services in 50 public libraries located in Seoul and six metropolitan cities (Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Busan, and Ulsan) across seven categories. These categories encompass various aspects, such as announcing reading programs and new books, identifying and addressing reader needs, developing content by librarians, generating content by readers, providing guidance on external reading information, connecting with professional book review databases and online websites, and utilizing social media services. Through this analysis, the study identified areas for improvement to enhance online readers' advisory services in public libraries and ultimately improve reader satisfaction. It suggested enhancing activities such as librarians' book recommendations and reviews for individual readers, reader participation, and interaction.

  • This study discussed the roles of librarians in readers' advisory services and the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs. For this, literatures were reviewed and readers' advisory courses provided by LIS programs of North America were investigated. And then the characteristics and contents of readers' advisory courses were analyzed. Based on the analysis, I suggested the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs of Korea.

Reader Collision Avoidance Scheme for Mobile RFID-Sensor Integrated Networks

  • In recent years, one of alternatives for constructing RFID networks that provide mobile services is using wireless sensor networks (WSN) to enhance network capacity, utility and scalability. Due to absence of compatible reader anti-collision control and channel capture phenomenon, the medium access control protocols as used in the RFID networks lead to reader collision and starvation problem. In this paper, we develop a MAC protocol which is called Enhanced Collision Avoidance MAC (ECO) to avoid reader to reader collisions in an integrated RFID network. ECO is a CSMA-based MAC protocol, and operates on integrated nodes which consist of a RFID reader and a mote. Performance evaluation shows superior results to pure-CSMA protocols under dense deployment environments, both in number of failures and in throughput.

  • With the progress of miniaturization and high performance of various sensors, a lot of data is generated in various fields and being collected in real-time, but the use of such large-capacity data is often unable to keep up with the collection technology. In the medical field, health data is collected and managed by platform, which causes inconvenience to users in searching their own health data and receiving medical services. In this paper, in order to solve these problems, we designed and implemented PHDItemReader to improve the speed of data query in a batch application environment that can integrate and process health data having various data expression formats. The experiment compared and analyzed 3 types of query speed based on 1,000,000 hypothetical health data, and as a result of the experiment, it was verified that the PHDItemReader implemented in this paper improved up to about 21% compared to the existing one.

  • For realizing ubiquitous computing, many research activities are geared towards various areas including embedded computing, RFID, USN, home networking, context-awareness, and etc. By using the ability of RFID technology to recognize a number of objects simultaneously, more convenient ubiquitous application services are effectively provided. In this case, RFID middleware playing a role as a bridge between RFID reader devices and application services is required as well. In this paper, we propose a method of handling a number of types of RFID reader devices in ALE middleware of EPCglobal. For this, the information of connection and data protocol for a reader device is stored in a database as ontology meta-data, and used to interpret the data read by a reader device. By adding ontology data into a database, even though an RFID device newly emerges, ALE middleware can not only handle the device, but also be effectively extended through reusing ontology data, without any changes in the middleware.

  • This paper presents the development of RFID educational system based on using 900MHz air interface between the reader and the active tag. The software of reader and the active tag is developed on embedded environment, and the software of PC controlling the reader is based on window OS operated as the server. The AT89C51ED2 VLSI chip is used for the processor of the reader and the active tag. As the development environment, Keil compiler is used for the reader and the active tag of which the programing language is C. The visual C language of the visual studio on the PC activated as the server is used for development language. To verify the function of the system, PC gets the tag's identification number through the reader and send the data to with the active tag memory a certain contents as "wite" operation. Finally the data written from the active tag's memory is sent to the PC via the reader as "read" operation and compare the received data with one already sent to the tag.

  • Q+-reader, an E-Book reader system for XML based contents is introduced, The system is developed for the embedded platform, called Q+, which targets for the digital home electronics systems, The system supports XML contents and CSS based styling as described in Open e-book standard. The system renders the e-book contents for users, sc the contents are secured for a proper use.   • Auto-ID industries and their services have been improved since decades ago, and radio frequency identification (RFID) has been contributing in many applications. Product management can be the foremost example. In our industrial experiences, RFID in ultra high frequency (UHF) band provides much longer interrogation ranges than that of 13.56MHz; many more applications exist thereby. There should be several interesting and useful ideas on UHF RFID; however, those ideas can be limited due to the inevitable environmental circumstances that restrict the interrogation range in shorten value. This paper discusses the propagation interference among different types of readers (e.g, mobile RFID readers in stationary reader zone) in dense-reader environment. In most cases, UHF RFIDs in Korea will be dependent on the UHF mobile RFIDs. In this sense, the UHF mobile users accidently move into the stationary reader's interrogation zone. This is serious problem. In this paper, we analyze propagation loss and propose the effective channel allocation scheme that can contribute developing less-invasive UHF RFID networks. The simulation and practical measurement process using the commercial CAD tools and measurement equipments are presented.

Development of Electronic Identification Unit Using RF (RF를 이용한 전자 개체 인식 장치 개발)

  • In Korea, a need of automatic dairy farm management system has been increased to lower production cost and to strengthen international competition. However, the present management system was mostly relied on foreign technologies and caused some problems in post management and after-sales services. Therefore, though there is a problem of price and quality at present, domestic technologies of the management system should be developed for the long run. This study was conducted to develop an electronic identification unit for an automatic dairy farm management system. The developed system was consisted of a tag, a reader, a switching circuit, and a personal computer. The tag attachable to each individual cow was developed to transmit individual radio frequency(RF) code into the air with modulation of ASK(amplitude shift keying). And the switching circuit was added to avoid confusion on reception and transmittance. The reader attached to a feeding device was developed to transmit activating signal periodically and to identify code of the individual tag when the tag was approached to the device. The reader was consisted of an active filter, a detecter, a comparator and a microcontroller. The test result was feasible enough to apply it for the automatic farm management system and the identified maximum distance was about 37cm.

A Specialized Reader for High Speed UHF RFID Tag Inlay Inspection Equipment (고속 UHF RFID 태그 검사 장비를 위한 전용 리더)

  • RFIDs have not become widespread as expected partly due to the cost, size, read range, and reliability problems of tags. The success rate of reading must be improved in order for RFIDs to be widely adopted. Quality control of tags is crucial to meet this requirement. In this study, we designed and implemented a high-performance reader used in inspection equipment that conducts prior inspection of tags. To improve performance of the developed reader, the baseband modem and command processor (CP) were designed using H/W logic and implemented with FPGA. The inspection of small pitch inlays was made possible through the antenna shielding device and H/W command processor function. This equipment enables accurate evaluation of performance and identification of tags satisfying a given read range. By contributing to sort out defective tags, the results can ultimately lead to more stable RFID services.
