  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the readability of Nearly White background color in display environment. To perform the experiment, warmup experiment was carried out to for cognitive of whiteness using a Tablet PC. The experiment environment was by a indoor window seat under a mixture of fluorescent light and sunlight. The result of previous test was that the most whiteness perception was a color white a medium wavelength and followed by the short wavelength. The main experiment was to find readability, color combination and visual strains using 4 nearly whites background colors (Reddish, Greenish, Blueish, Yellowish) and one white background color, also text color is limited on black. As a result, readability and color combination had the highest score against a Greenish white background. Visual strain is also the lowest against a Greenish background. On the contrary, readability and color combination preference has the lowest score against the Reddish background. Visual strain is also the highest against a Reddish background. We propose the background color, which improves readability and reduces visual strain in visual display terminals environment through the research results.

  • Readability, an indicator measuring the easiness of reading letters, is an important element that determines the communicative effectiveness of self-guided signs. This study examined how the letter design elements of self-guided signs influence on readability to provide basic information for more effective sign designs. Data were collected from August to November of 2003 at a self-guided trail of Naejangsan National Park, Korea. A total of 375 subjects participated in the questionnaire survey, and 94.7% of them were used for data analysis. Among the total of 19 attributes, five attributes such as number of letters, number of type styles, ratio of picture area on the signs, space between letters, type size influenced on readability. These five attributes explained 50.0% of the variation in readability. The number of letters was the most influential attributes on readability, followed by the number of type styles, ratio of picture area on the signs, space between letters, and type size. The effectiveness of signs may be efficiently increased by managing these five major attributes with more concern.

  • There are many attempts to transfer many applications from PC to mobile which has small screen, cause of a development of mobile technology. To display the whole information of the PC on the tiny screen, it makes many Horizontal Scroll, Horizontal Scroll in mobile screen makes people to miss where they are reading easily and such a frequent error makes readability of the information in mobile screen low. We suggest a Line Marker to help readability of the mobile screen high. This study shows the relationship between the conditions of Line Marker such as fixed or moved or not exists and the factors of the reading time and satisfaction.

  • Purpose : To evaluate and compare the efficacy of digital radiographic images in the detection of bone loss at the bifurcation area of the mandibular first molar with traditional film-based periapical radiographs, Materials and Methods : One dried human mandible with minimal periodontal bone loss around the first molar was selected and an artificial alveolar bone defect at the bifurcation area was serially prepared over 18 steps. Images were taken using a direct CCD-based system and with F-speed periapical films. The images were evaluated by seven interpreters (3 radiologists, 3 periodontologists, and 1 general dentist) using a 5-point confidence rating scale. Results : The readability of both periapical radiographs and digital image increased as the size of the artificial lesion and exposure time increased (p < 0.05). Periapical radiographs offered greater readability of smaller bone defects than digital images, and the coefficient of variation of mean score between periapical radiographs and digital images showed a significant difference. Conclusion : The experimental results indicate that a significant difference in the coefficient of variation of mean score exists between periapical radiographs and digital images, and that traditional film-based periapical images offer greater readability of smaller bone defects than digital images can presently offer.

  • In this study, we examined the effects of background and underline on the readability of displayed text. The background was placed on every other line and the underline was done with every line of the text. The effect of adding color to the background and underline was also of primary concern. Twenty subjects were tested on their reading efficiency (i.e. time-to-read and comprehension) and subjective preference of different text format presented on a LCD. Result showed that for the background condition, the background with green format significantly decreased the time-to-read as compared to the format without any background. The results of ANOVA on comprehension and subjective preference were also consistent with this finding. For the underline condition, otherwise, the underline with yellow format yielded higher speed and better comprehension. The results imply that adding background or underlines with appropriate colors can be an additional and useful way of improving text readability.

  • This paper proposes a method for designing a large recording script for open domain English speech synthesis. For read-aloud style text, 12 domains and 294 sub-domains were designed using text contained in five different news media publications. For conversational style text, 4 domains and 36 sub-domains were designed using movie subtitles. The final script consists of 43,013 sentences, 27,085 read-aloud style sentences, and 15,928 conversational style sentences, consisting of 549,683 tokens and 38,356 types. The completed script is analyzed using four criteria: word coverage (type coverage and token coverage), high-frequency vocabulary coverage, phonetic coverage (diphone coverage and triphone coverage), and readability. The type coverage of our script reaches 36.86% despite its low token coverage of 2.97%. The high-frequency vocabulary coverage of the script is 73.82%, and the diphone coverage and triphone coverage of the whole script is 86.70% and 38.92%, respectively. The average readability of whole sentences is 9.03. The results of analysis show that the proposed method is effective in producing a large recording script for English speech synthesis, demonstrating good coverage in terms of unique words, high-frequency vocabulary, phonetic units, and readability.

  • Cyber deception defense mitigates Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) with deploying deceptive entities, such as the Honeyfile. The Honeyfile distracts attackers from valuable digital documents and attracts unauthorized access by deliberately exposing fake content. The effectiveness of distraction and trap lies in the enticement of fake content. However, existing studies on the Honeyfile focus less on this perspective. In this work, we seek to improve the enticement of fake text content through enhancing its readability, indistinguishability, and believability. Hence, an enticing deceptive-content generator, EDGE, is presented. The EDGE is constructed with three steps: extracting key concepts with a semantics-aware K-means clustering algorithm, searching for candidate deceptive concepts within the Word2Vec model, and generating deceptive text content under the Integrated Readability Index (IR). Furthermore, the readability and believability performance analyses are undertaken. The experimental results show that EDGE generates indistinguishable deceptive text content without decreasing readability. In all, EDGE proves effective to generate enticing deceptive text content as deception defense against APTs.

  • Generally the patient's absorb dose and readability of radiograms are affected by the exposure time and kVp of which are related with the radiographic density and contrast The investigator carried studies to know the adequate level of exposure time and kVp to obtain the better readability of radiograms. In these studies dried human mandible with selfcuring acrylic resins attached with aluminum step wedge was used and readability of radiograms were compared with each other by videodensitometry among various combination sets of the exposure time, such as 5, 6, 8, 12, 15, 19, 24, 30, 38, 48 and 60, and varing level of kVp, such as 60, 65, 70, 80 and 90 respectively. The obtained results were as follows: 1. As exposure time and kVp were increased, radiographic density of radiograms was increased. 2. The subject contrast was increased where aluminum step wedge was thin and reduced in the reversed condition. At the thin aluminum step wedge, subject contrast was increased at the condition of lower kilovoltage than that of higher kilovoltage. 3. In the case of non-constant radiographic density, the radiographic contrast was reduced with the increment kilovoltage. The radiographic contrast was increased in the lower kilovoltage with the longer exposure time and the higher kilovoltage with the shorter exposure time. 4. At the condition of short exposure time, better readability of each reading item was obtained with the increment of the kilovoltage but at the opposite condition increasing exposure time worsened readability of radiograms. Since X-ray machine in the current dental clinics is fixed between the range of 60-70kVp and 10mA, good radiograms can be obtained by varied exposure time. But according to the conclusion of these studies, better radiograms can be obtained by using filtered high kVp and then the absorb dose to patient and exposure time can be reduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify whether readability formulas based on linguistic factors are suitable for secondary and older primary age texts. A comparison among fomulas for primary age texts, some for both primary and secondary age, and some for secondary age revealed that exclusive ones for narrow age range were more effective. A model estimating readability scores from the average number of sentences in paragraphs or a model with two factors, the average number of sentences and paragraphs in texts was found to be good one for secondary age. While a model based on total number of unique syllables or a model from total number of unique syllables and new syllable occurrence ratio was good for primary age.

  • The background of this study lies in the increasing economic value of Korean fonts and the necessity for font development focused on small character design suitable for the mobile environment. The objective of this study is to analyze and propose strategies to improve readability on mobile screens. The research was conducted by applying eight attributes that could enhance readability according to Tim Ahrens to the design process of a Korean mobile font, adjusting Google's Noto Sans Korean for print/publishing and for small sizes. The results of the study indicate that 1. type width should be increased, 2. open counter (interior space) should be increased, 3. closed counter should be decreased, 4. font weight should be increased, 5. stroke contrast should be decreased, 6. spacing between characters should be increased. Therefore, distinct font families should be provided, differentiating between print/publishing and mobile use, as well as varying font weights and sizes, applying readability and legibility enhancement techniques for Korean fonts.
