  • This paper describes an assistant system for elders who live alone. The developed system is composed of a wearable RFID system, a gateway system, and server system. The wearable RFID system is installed in glove. The wearable RFID system can be considered as a wireless sensor network which has a sink node and sensor node with a RFID reader. The sensor node can read RFID tags on the various objects used in daily living such as furniture, medicines, sugar and salt bottles, and ok. The sensor node transmits wireless packets to the sink node. The sink node sends the received packet immediately to a server system via a gateway system. The gateway provides users with audio-visual information of objects. The server system is composed of a database server and a web server. The data from each wearable RFID system is collected into a database, and then the data are processed to visualize the measurement of daily living activities of users. The processed data can be provided for someone who wants to know about user's daily living patterns in house such as family, caregivers, and medical crew.

  • This study is considered how to use newspapers to apply education by the way of analyses of environment coverage in newspapers. Data for the study were gathered by content analyses of KINDS(Korean Integrated News Database System) established by Korean Press Institute. The environment coverage is mainly placed in social and regional magazines of newspapers, and the news story are mainly assigned to straight/feature magazines in type. The news of environment coverage is mostly gathered from data by government-informer, and the news is positive/agreement or negative/disagreement in tenor. The news gathering methods of planning/magazine newspaper serial are scientific and objective, and they are of the firsthand data by news reporter, contributions by experts and interviews. The spaces of the news are specially edited. The environment news is often negative/disagreeable in tenor because the news is mostly of straight ones written by non-experts. Applying newspapers in education is a useful learning method which students could develop thinking power and induce concerning and interest by themselves. From the results of the study, the useful suggestions to apply newspapers to learning are as follows. At first, spaces and types of news must be read in detail. Secondly, it is hopeful that indirect news by not writer himself might be possibly avoided in learning. Thirdly, the themes of news would be picked up in relation with learning contents. Lastly, it suggests that the tenor of news is neutral or, in cases, positive and negative together possibly.

  • The column-oriented database storage is a very advanced model for large-volume data transactions because of its superior I/O performance. Traditional data storages exploit row-oriented storage where the attributes of a record are placed contiguously in hard disk for fast write operations. However, for search-mostly data warehouse systems, column-oriented storage has become a more proper model because of its superior read performance. Recently, solid state drive using flash memory is largely recognized as the preferred storage media for high-speed data analysis systems. In this research, we propose a new transaction recovery scheme for a column-oriented database environment which is based on a flash media file system. We improved traditional shadow paging schemes by reusing old data pages which are supposed to be invalidated in the course of writing a new data page in the flash file system environment. In order to reuse these data pages, we exploit reused shadow list structure in our column-oriented shadow recovery(CoSR) scheme. CoSR scheme minimizes the additional storage overhead for keeping shadow pages and minimizes the I/O performance degradation caused by column data compression of traditional recovery schemes. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that CoSR outperforms the traditional schemes by 17%.

  • The research to predict the resistance performance of the ship using the CFD analysis is increasing. For the CFD numerical analysis the computational mesh, which is proper to computational model, has to be made before the analysis is begun. In the parametric study, even though the deformation of each case is not very sharp, the whole computational mesh should be regenerated according to the conventional way. Hence, lots of effort is needed to repeated mesh generation work. To solve these problems, the automatic mesh generation method using the macro function of commercial CAD program and mesh generation program is introduced in this study. First, in the CAD program, by using the macro function and putting the deformation rate of bow and stern in lengthwise, the repeated modeling work is performed automatically. Next, the generated geometries are read by the mesh generation program and the proper mesh for the geometry is created automatically also using the macro function. The hybrid mesh which has unstructured grid near the bow and stern and structured grid in the remaining part of domain is used. The verification of the developed method is done by applying the method to predict the resistance performance of the podded propulsion cruise ship of the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in the cases of different length of bow and stern and pod set in different position. The author believes that the introduced method can help to make the database to optimize the resistance performance of the ship in various cases can be constructed without difficulty.

  • In this study, a P wave emphasizing and detection algorithm from ECG signal was proposed to read arrhythmia. The algorithm uses two slope tracing waveform, the descending slope tracing wave and the ascending slope tracing wave, developed for efficient determination of slope inverting points and sudden slope changing points. The algorithm generates the slope tracing waveform which trace the original ECG wave, and subtracts one tracing wave from the other to detect P and T waves. The algorithm has been applied to MIT/BIH database in order to verify its efficacy and validity in practical applications.

  • The data accumulated in this database will be used to develop a speaker identification system. This may also be applied towards, but not limited to, fields of phonetic studies, sociolinguistics, and language pathology. We plan to supplement the large-scale speech corpus next year, in terms of research methodology and content, to better answer the needs of diverse fields. The purpose of this study is to develop a speech corpus for standard Korean speech. For the samples to viably represent the state of spoken Korean, demographic factors were considered to modulate a balanced spread of age, gender, and dialects. Nine separate regional dialects were categorized, and five age groups were established from individuals in their 20s to 60s. A speech-sample collection protocol was developed for the purpose of this study where each speaker performs five tasks: two reading tasks, two semi-spontaneous speech tasks, and one spontaneous speech task. This particular configuration of sample data collection accommodates gathering of rich and well-balanced speech-samples across various speech types, and is expected to improve the utility of the speech corpus developed in this study. Samples from 639 individuals were collected using the protocol. Speech samples were collected also from other sources, for a combined total of samples from 1,012 individuals.

  • To get more natural synthetic speech generated by a Korean TTS (Text-To-Speech) system, we have to know all the possible prosodic rules in Korean spoken language. We should find out these rules from linguistic, phonetic information or from real speech. In general, all of these rules should be integrated into a prosody-generation algorithm in a TTS system. But this algorithm cannot cover up all the possible prosodic rules in a language and it is not perfect, so the naturalness of synthesized speech cannot be as good as we expect. ANNs (Artificial Neural Networks) can be trained to learn the prosodic rules in Korean spoken language. To train and test ANNs, we need to prepare the prosodic patterns of all the phonemic segments in a prosodic corpus. A prosodic corpus will include meaningful sentences to represent all the possible prosodic rules. Sentences in the corpus were made by picking up a series of words from the list of PB (phonetically Balanced) isolated words. These sentences in the corpus were read by speakers, recorded, and collected as a speech database. By analyzing recorded real speech, we can extract prosodic pattern about each phoneme, and assign them as target and test patterns for ANNs. ANNs can learn the prosody from natural speech and generate prosodic patterns of the central phonemic segment in phoneme strings as output response of ANNs when phoneme strings of a sentence are given to ANNs as input stimuli.

  • Automated welding and soldering are an important manufacturing issue in order to lower the cost, increase the quality, and avoid labor problems. An off-line programming, OLP, is one of the powerful methods to solve this kind of diversity problem. Unless an OLP system is ready for the path optimization in welding and soldering, the waste of time and cost is unavoidable due to inefficient paths in welding and soldering processes. Therefore, this study attempts to obtain path optimization using a genetic algorithm based on artificial intelligences. The problem of welding path optimization is defined as a conventional TSP (traveling salesman problem), but still paths have to go through welding lines. An improved genetic algorithm was suggested and the problem was formulated as a TSP problem considering the both end points of each welding line read from database files, and then the transit problem of welding line was solved using the improved suggested genetic algorithm.
