  • Following the prior studs regarding that 1.0g of cotton fabric cound be dyed uniformly with a reactive dye in the solvent mixture of 2㎖ of water and 23㎖ of dichloromethane, silk fabric was dyed with C. I. Reactive Blue 203 in the water/dichloromethane two-phase immiscible solvent media. In order to minimize dye loss due to its hydrolysis, the reactive dyeing was carried out in dichloromethane containing a small amount of water. With only 3㎖ of water in 22㎖ of dichloromethane, 1.0g of silk fabric could be dyed perfectly. The uptake ratio was increased greatly, compared with that of normal reactive dyeing in a water medium. It would seem that the one of hydrophobic solvents, dichloromethane, can assist the even dyeing as it disperses a small amount of dye-dissolved water phase and conveys this water phase to the fabric entirely and uniformly.

  • The purpose of this study is to produce cotton fabric having improved dyeability and colorfastness as well as retaining the desirable durable press property. When cotton fabric was treated with additives, nitrogen content was increased as the additive concentration was increased. DP ratings and wrinkle recovery properties of BTCA treated cotton fabrics were greatly increased. But DP rating was lowered slightly by adding additives and wrinkle recovery property was decreased with the increase of additive concentration. Tensile strength was decreased by BTCA treatment but increased as additive concentration was increased. Various BTCA/additive treatments produced great affinity for reactive and acid dyes when dyebaths were adjusted at pH 3. It was showed that dyeability was increased as additive concentration was increased. The most effective additive for improving the dyeing properties of the crosslinked cotton was TEAㆍHCl. In case of reactive dye, there was almost no improvement on the dyeability of finished cotton by adding salt. Color fastness to washing and light of finished and dyed cotton were low except for the washfastness of reactive dye. Dyeing the BTCA/additive treated cotton fabrics with reactive dye had no effect on the physical properties.

  • A Klebsiella pneumoniae WL-5 with the capability of decolorizing several recalcitrant dyes was isolated from activated sludge of an effluent treatment plant of a textile and dyeing industry. This strain showed a higher dye decolorization under static condition and color removal was optimal at pH 6-8 and $30-35^{\circ}C$. More than 90% of its color of Congo Red were reduced within 12 hr at $200\;{\mu}M$ dye concentration. Malachite Green, Brilliant Green and Reactive Black-5 lost over 85% of their colors at $10\;{\mu}M$ dye concentration, but the percentage decolorization of Reactive Red-120, Reactive Orange-16, and Crystal Violet were about 46%, 25%, and 13%, respectively. Decolorizations of Congo Red and triphenylmethane dyes, such as Malachite Green, Brilliant Green, and Crystal Violet were mainly due to adsorption to cells, whereas azo dyes, such as Reactive Black-5, Reactive Red-120, and Reactive Orange-16 seemed to be removed by biodegradation through unknown enzymatic processes.

  • The effects of agents in padding liquor on the fixation of vinylsulfonyl reactive dye of ground color and on the resist-dischargeability in resist-discharge printing of cotton fabrics with reactive/reactive dyes were investigated. Alkalis, such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium acetate and trichloro sodium acetate, were used to fix the dye for ground color on cotton fabrics. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate showed a good fixation of the dye for ground color, but they were ineffective to the white and the colored resistdsichargeabilities, which were caused by the fast fixation of the dye for ground color before its reaction with resist agent in printing paste. Therefore these are not suitable for the agent to fix the dyes for ground color because they deteriorate the resist-dischargeability. In case of sodium acetate, as the fixation yield of the dye for ground color was remarkably low. and the white resistdischargeability was not good, it had better not be used for the agent to fix the dye for ground color. However, the addition of sodium trichloroacetate to padding liquor gave a very good fixation yield of ground color, and showed an excellent resist-dischargeability. The effects of acetic acid in padding liquor on the fixation of the dye for ground color and on the resist-dischargeability were studied in case of immediate printing of resist-discharge pastes after padding and drying and in cases of printing after 1∼3 day-storage of padded goods. By the addition of 2% of 48% acetic acid aqueous solution to padding liquor, the white and the colored resist-dischargeabilities were improved and the fixation of the dye for ground color was good without any troubles. Especially, when the padded goods were stored for 2 or 3 days and printed with resist-discharge printing pastes, its addition was very effective on the resist-dischargeability.

  • As polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) filament yarn is commercially used in many fields due to its high strength and modulus properties. This research was carried out to study the dyeing behavior of PVA and to find out appropriate dye for better dyeing. As the dyeing behavior of PVA fiber is similar to cellulose due to the same functional group, reactive and vat dyes were selected for the dyeing. Color strength of PVA fibers treated with vat dyes was found to be better than those with reactive dyes, because of the low fixation of reactive dye on fibers. Most of the reactive dye may became hydrolyzed, and flushed away with water in washing. Colorfastness to laundering was shown to be very high for both of the reactive-dyed and vat-dyed PVA fibers.

  • The production of reactive oxygen species on addition of hexavalent chromium (potassium dichromate, $K_2Cr_2O_7$ ) to lung cells in culture was studied using flow cytometer analysis. A Coulter Epics Profile flow cytometer was used to detect the formation of reactive oxygen species after $K_2Cr_2O_7$ was added to A549 cells grown to confluence. The cells were loaded with the dye, 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate, after which cellular esterases removed the acetate groups and the dye was trapped intracellularly. Reactive oxygen species oxidized the dye, with resultant fluorescence. Increased doses of Cr(VI) caused increasing fluorescence (10-fold higher than background at 200 gM). Addition of Cr(III) compounds, as the picolinate or chloride, caused no increased fluorescence. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic studies indicated that three (as yet unidentified) spectral "signals" of the free radical type were formed on addition of 20, 50, 100 and 200 gM Cr(VI) to the A549 cells in suspension. Two other EPR 'signals" with the characteristics of Cr(V) entities were seen at field values lower than the standard free radical value. radical value.

  • A POM-membrane was fabricated by immobilizing a keggin type polyoxometalate (POM) H5PV2Mo10O40 onto the surface of microporous flat-sheet polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) membrane using a chemical deposition method. The POM-membrane was characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDX to confirm existing of the POM onto the membrane surface. The POM-membrane was used to remove an anionic textile dye (Reactive Black 5 named as an RB5) from aqueous phases with a cross-flow membrane filtration and a batch adsorption system. The dye removal efficiency of the POM-membrane using the cross-flow membrane filtration system and the batch adsorption system was about 88% and 98%, respectively. The influence factors such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial dye concentration were investigated to understand the adsorption mechanism of the RB5 dye onto the POM-membrane. To find the best fitting isotherm model, Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Harkins-Jura isotherm models were used to analyze the experimental data. The isotherm analysis showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was found to the best fit for the adsorption data (R2 = 0.9982, qmax = 24.87 mg/g). Also, adsorption kinetic models showed the pseudo second order kinetic model was found the best model to fit the experimental data (R2 = 0.9989, q = 8.29 mg/g, C0 = 15 ppm). Moreover, after four times regeneration with HNO3 acid, the POM-membrane showed high regenerability without losing dye adsorption capacity.

  • Although isotactic polypropylene gives an excellent fiber having high tenacity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability, it has not been widely used as a fabric for chlothing because of its poor dyeability. A number of methods for improvement of its dyeability have been proposed, but they were too complicated and/or gave damage its original excellent properties of polypropylene. We now wish to report the synthesis of a new reactive dye for polypropylene fiber by means of carbenic process. A reactive dye was synthesized from azo disperse dye having an aldehyde group and tosylhydrazine. By using this synthesized reactive dye, polypropylene fiber was dyed to thick and fast color.

  • Comamonas sp. AEBL-85 was isolated from microbial granules in an activated sludge process of long-term operated for the treatment of reactive azo dye, and characterized its capability to decolorize Reactive Black 5. The effects of adding carbon source and nitrogen source on the extent of decol-orization were analyzed to develop an optimal medium. The optimum initial pH and temperature wire 6.0 and 35$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Reactive Black 5 of 50 mg/l was readily decolorized up to 95% within 40 hr by Comamonas sp. AEBL-85.
