Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber reinforced SiC composites (SiC/SiC) have been fabricated by the reaction sintering process. Braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC was used in this composite system. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites were investigated through means of electron microscopies (SEM, TEM, EDS) and bending tests. The matrix morphology of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites was composed of the SiC phases that the composition of the silicon and the carbon is different. The TEM analysis showed that the residual silicon and the unreacted carbon were finely distributed in the matrix region of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites. Reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites also represented proper flexural strength and fracture energy, accompanying the noncatastrophic failure behavior.
Reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ has cost-reduction merit because inexpensive silicon powder was used as a start material. But its density was not so high enough to be used for structural materials. So the sintered reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$techniques were developed to solve the low density problem. In this study the sintered reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ manufacturing method by using polymer precursor which recently attained significant interest owing to the good shaping and processing ability was proposed. The formations, properties of reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ from silicon and polysilazane mixture were investigated. High density reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ was manufactured from silicon and silicon-containing preceramic polymers and post-sintering technique. The mixtures of silicon powder and polysilazane were prepared and reaction sintered in $N_2$ atmosphere at $1350^{\circ}C$ and post-sintered at 1600~$1950^{\circ}C$. Density and phase were analyzed and correlated to the resulting material properties.
The liquid-phase concentration from the interior to the surface region and its influence on the microstructural changes were investigated in pressureless sintered $\beta$-SiC Surface reaction-layer was formed by reaction of packing powder and volatile components on the surface during sintering which was induced the concentration of liquid-phase in the surface regions. The microstructural changes between the surface region and the interior were appeared in sintered specimen which was resulted from the difference of liquid-phase content during sintering. Microstructural changes were observd with the depth of about 250${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ from he surface. The grain size and aspect ratio of SiC in the interior are larger than those in the surface region and the rate of transforma-tion of $\beta$-to $\alpha$-SiC during sintering is higher in the interior than that in the surface region.
From alumina powder and TEOS, $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder for reaction-sintered mullite was synthesized by heterogeneous coagulation and surface coating, and investigated the mullitization reaction and sintering behavor of these powders. In $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder prepared by heterogeneous coagulation, each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles of 50~60 nm in size. And the alumina particles in composite powder prepared by surface coating were coated by uniform silica layer with thickness of 50 nm. In both methods, mullitization reaction was completed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 3h, and specimen sintered above 145$0^{\circ}C$ was about 95% fo the theoretical relative density. Mullite grains formed from the reaction with composite powders showed spherical shape with a size of 1~2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

The effects of the debinding atmosphere on the properties of sintered reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ (SRBSN) ceramics prepared by tape casting method were investigated. Si green tape was produced from Si slurry of Si powder, using 11.5 wt% polyvinyl butyral as the organic binder and 35 wt% dioctyl phthalate as the plasticizer. The debinding process was conducted in air and $N_2$ atmospheres at $400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The nitridation process of the debinded Si specimens was performed at $1450^{\circ}C$, followed by sintering at $1850^{\circ}C$ and 20 MPa. The results revealed that the debinding atmosphere had a significant effect on $Si_3N_4$ densification and thermal conductivity. Owing to the higher sintered density and larger grain size, the thermal conductivity of $Si_3N_4$ specimens debinded in air was higher than that of the samples debinded in $N_2$. Thus, debinding in air could be suitable for the manufacture of high-performance SRBSN substrates by tape casting.
A series of reaction-sintered SiC was fabricated from preforms with varying volume fractions of two resin-coated SiC particles of different sizes (63 and $18{\mu}m$). The electrical resistivity and mechanical strength were eventually optimized at the small particle volume fraction of $0.3{\sim}0.4$, at which point the porosity of the preform was minimized. This study experimentally proves that additional processes after the formation of the preform, such as silicon infiltration and reaction sintering, do not apparently alter the optimum volume fraction of the preform packing, predicted by an existing analytical model based on solid packing. Thus, the volume fraction of particles of different sizes can be determined practically through the solid packing model to fabricate RSSCs with optimal properties.
Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available 85 ${\mu}m\;{\alpha}-$-SiC powder and 44 ${\mu}m$ mullite, CaC$O_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400{^{\circ}C}$ 2 h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure was investigated. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600{^{\circ}C}$ in IGCC syngas atmosphere. The sintered SiC filter which was formed by ramming process has more higher density and exhibit higher strength than extruded filter. Its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were 2.00 g/$cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively.
SiC had been widely applied for mechanical sealing as a sealing material. SiC sintering is commonly made of reaction sintering, presureless sintering, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) sintering. In this investigation, however, clay bonded sintering was used to avoide any complications of the special sintering methods as mentioned above. In order to prevent harmful SiC oxidation in the clay bonded sintering, clay and frit were used to form the SiC oxidation protecting layer and graphite was added to provide high solid lubricity. As a result, the material with 6% clay (clay 5.4% and frit 0.6%) and 2~4% graphite (45 mesh) sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours, showed the following physical properties; porosity 6%, static friction coefficient 0.15, kinematic coefficient 0.1,. and specific wear rate 4.8$\times$10-8 $\textrm{mm}^2$kgf-1. On the other hand, the flexural strength was 900kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. This tribological characteristic properties were similar to those of the reaction sintered SiC except the flexural strength.
To fabricate porous SiC-Si composites for heating element applications, both SiC powders and Si powders were mixed and sintered together. The properties of the sintered SiC-Si body were investigated as a function of SiC particle size and/or Si particle contents from 10 wt% to 40 wt%, respectively. Porous SiC-Si composites were fabricated by Si bonded reaction at a sintering temperature of $1650^{\circ}C$ for 80 min. The microstructure and phase analysis of SiC-Si composites that depend on Si particle contents were characterized using scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The electrical resistivity of SiC-Si composites was also evaluated using a 4-point probe resistivity method. The electrical resistivity of the sintered SiC-Si body sharply decreased as the amount of Si addition increased. We found that the electrical resistivity of porous SiC-Si composites is closely related to the amount of Si added and at least 20 wt% Si are needed in order to apply the SiCSi composites to the heating element.
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a candidate material for heat exchangers for VHTR (Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor) due to its refractory nature and high thermal conductivity. This research has focused on demonstration of physical properties and mock-up fabrication for the future heat exchange applications. It was found that the SiC-based components can be applied for process heat exchanger (PHE) and intermediate heat exchanger (IHX), which are operated at $400{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$, based on our examination for the following aspects: optimum fabrication technologies (design, machining and bonding) for compact design, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid environment at high temperature, and simulation results on heat transferring and thermal stress distribution of heat exchanger mock-up.
